Our client based in Central London are seeking an Assistant Gardener to manage and inspire their horticultural team to ensure the delivery of experiences that are representative of Covent Garden as a world class destination. To help curate and support the design objectives and vision for Covent Garden. Deliver seasonal changeovers, one-off installations and ongoing maintenance of all planting across the estate.

You would be required to ensure that your contractual obligations are fulfilled to an exceptional standard and in accordance with statutory compliance. Work alongside the client, colleagues and supply partners to build relationships and develop a one team approach. 

Key Duties & Responsibilities

-Act as an ambassador of Covent Garden and seek out opportunities to provide visitors and occupiers with friendly conversation and background information of the plants used and upcoming installations.

-Provide line management for the Horticultural team, coordinate their daily duties and manage holiday cover/sick leave.

-Coordinate deliveries, the use of consumables and the provision and maintenance of all hand tools, equipment and machinery.

-Track expenditure and report to the finance department monthly.

-Manage the apprenticeship scheme and employment of apprentices, provide supervision where required.

-Maintain a high level of H&S awareness, ensuring compliance with statutory regulations at all times.

-Design and present seasonal installations for approval by the client.

-Attend seminars and exhibitions with a view to promoting Covent Garden, sharing best practice and developing innovation.

-Update social media feeds with regular good news stories and photographs.

-Manage the maintenance, repair and replacement of all pots, hanging baskets, and box planters.

-Maintain all plants, trees, shrubs, climbers, perennials and annuals.

-Ensure the safe use and maintenance of equipment such as the water bowser, hedge trimmers and hand tools.

-Maintain a high level of presentation in all areas and report and areas for improvement.

-Manage the maintenance and repair of any garden furniture, outside structures and adhoc installations.

The Candidate:

This is an active and visible role requiring excellent customer relationships with senior client property team members, sound commercial and supplier management skills as well as keen business ability.

-Candidates are sought who have experience with large-scale, high-end installations, managing or supervision a team and a flair for design.

-Knowledge or COSHH and IOSH training is desirable.

The hours of work are Monday-Friday 8am-4.30pm with some weekend work during the summer months.

Experienced Gardener

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an experienced skilled gardener to manage a beautiful private garden in Hampstead, Greater London. The diverse 1-acre garden consists of a rose garden and climbing roses, wisteria, yew hedges, mixed beds, herbaceous borders and shrubs, mature trees, a kitchen garden with raised beds and a greenhouse, lawn, tennis courts, pond with a water feature and a pergola / trellis walkway.

The skilled gardener will have a true passion for plants and gardening, a positive ‘can-do’ attitude and have the determination and drive to work autonomously. He / She will have a vision for maintaining and enhancing the garden as required and is someone who takes pride in their work.

The successful candidate will ideally hold a minimum level 2 horticultural qualification combined with excellent plant knowledge, excellent technical skills and a minimum of 5 years previous experience working on private estates. PA1/PA6 spray certificates would be an advantage as well as the ability to operate and maintain a range of garden machinery.

Additional duties include maintaining the tennis court (tiger turf - to be kept moss free), clearing the gutters, some handyman duties including some painting and basic electrical assistance, maintaining two cars and once or twice a year take care of the dog. The successful applicant will have a full driving licence.

A one-bedroom accommodation, offsite but next to the property, is provided for the successful candidate. The accommodation is suitable for single occupancy; council tax and water and electricity bills will be covered by the employers.

Job Description:

The exterior technician supervisor will work closely with Operations Manager in motivating and driving team to deliver inspirational levels of service to the customers. He / She will monitor team performance against service performance targets and implementing the necessary corrective action where these are not met as well as own all escalated recalls, liaising with all parties involved to ensure rapid and effective closure.

The Supervisor will continue to develop their own skills and maintain personal performance in order that they can effectively carry out maintenance calls to complete their allocated rounds. The role requires a balance of activity, dividing time between completion of maintenance calls and support of the team.

Primary responsibility: Proactively developing and enhancing the quality of service provided to internal and external customers. Visit client sites and maintain to a high standard all allocated plant displays. Build and keep up a good client relationship.

Performance Objectives: Quality of maintenance to exceed client expectation – you go the extra mile.  Keep meticulously accurate records.

Responsibilities / Duties:

Visit and manage all plant displays on allocated rounds on the days set by the service manager.  To include watering, dusting, cleaning, pest control, straightening, trimming, tidying surface dressing and replacing when required.  Also carry out reasonable request by the client.

-Learn and understand the habits and the different light, water and feed requirements for each species of plant.

-Learn names of all plants used and discuss confidently with clients.

-Cover other technician’s rounds when required.

-Build and maintain customer relationships with a cheerful and friendly attitude.

-Introduce yourself to all new clients.

-Assist the Nursery Manager by ensuring that the technicians keep the plant area tidy and clean.

-Monitor teams vans to ensure that they are kept very clean and tidy inside and out.

-Give feedback and support to the service technicians based on service reporting and observations made in the field, coach technicians individually about their performance, including customer handling.

-Regularly communicate with all technicians and work with the service manager in providing motivation to achieve team and company’s objectives.

-Ensure each team member understands and are working to the company’s health and safety operational standards.

Must be customer driven and dedicated to putting the customer first.

Excellent time management and organisation skills

Positive attitude and flexibility to changes as required by the environment.

Education / Experience required:

Ability to work without close supervision.

Demonstrates a high plant maintenance aptitude.

A high level of commercial and customer satisfaction knowledge will be required within the role.

Previous experience in Managing/supervising a team.
