Our client has grown into a leading independent gardening company with six centres along with a garden maintenance business and are now looking for a Garden Centre Manager to join one of their centres.
The Garden Centre Manager's role will be to lead the creation of outstanding customer retail / leisure experience and maximize the centre’s commercial contribution.
Responsibilities:
- Profit management. Manage the Garden Centre profit and loss to optimise profit contribution.
- Operational management. Manage the retail space and Garden Centre environment to optimise the customer experience, team member work environment and commercial contribution.
- Team management. Recruit, motivate, and manage the team to ensure the successful delivery of the annual Garden Centre objectives.
- Business planning. Create and refresh the annual business plan for the Garden Centre to clarify the financial ambition.
- Customer care. Resolve customer issues and complaints to bring about effective resolution and encourage customers to return.
- Resource management. Design and manage the resourcing approach for the Garden Centre to optimise the customer experience and cost management.
- Business development. Works in collaboration with the local community and concession partners to create customer offers and events that inspire customers to visit and buy.

The Department
The Grounds Team are part of the Estates Department and are made up of approximately 26 professional and highly motivated individuals who pride themselves on the maintenance and upkeep of the prestigious grounds. The grounds of the Club include ten croquet lawns, thirty grass tennis courts, a cricket ground, a nine-hole golf course, two bowling greens and over a hectare of flowers, shrubs and ornamental lawns. It is through the efforts of the Grounds team that the Club’s members are rewarded year on year with award winning sports surfaces and stunning season changing flowerbeds.
Job Specifics
As a seasonal you will work a 39-hour week, Monday to Friday (plus regular weekend overtime – one in three mornings). The salary for the role is £28,089 per annum, prorated for the length of contract, which calculates at an hourly rate of £13.85 per hour. Your role includes supporting the permanent team in a wide range of duties, taking care of either the sports turf surfaces and event set up or the gardens around the Club.
This is a fixed term role. Candidates must be available from February/March through to the end of November.

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Skilled Gardener to join the team maintaining a new 32-acre park, recently opened, becoming London’s largest public park created in over a decade, since the creation of the Olympic Park.

A well-respected award-winning company, our client has been responsible for numerous very high-profile projects throughout the city of London and are currently expanding their maintenance arm, leading to an increasing number of high-profile contracts. The company has recently secured a new and exciting contract in the Wandsworth/Tooting area. They are seeking an experienced and Skilled Gardener, working as part of the existing site team. In addition to a competitive salary, the client will generously pay for the travel expenses of the successful candidate.
The Site:
The park is being developed in stages, with families already enjoying its first phase. When fully completed, it will feature sports pitches, amphitheatre, formal gardens, community and sensory gardens, playgrounds, ponds, a youth shelter and wonderful footbridges. In terms of biodiversity, the park will have over 700 new trees from more than 30 native British species, like birch, alder, oak, and beech, contributing to local environmental efforts. The park is expected to open in phases, with full completion anticipated by 2025.
Main Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the landscaped areas, ensuring the site remains a beautiful, safe and welcoming environment for the employees within the building. This is a client-facing role and the successful candidate will need to be professional at all times, dealing with any questions or enquiries the client may have. Our client is seeking an individual who is hard-working, knowledgeable, willing to learn and has good time keeping. Candidates will have the ability to work as part of a team or individually under their own initiative.
Duties will include but are not limited to the following:
- Carry out regular maintenance tasks such as mowing, weeding, pruning, and trimming to ensure all landscaped areas are kept in optimal condition.
- Water, fertilise, and provide care to plants, shrubs, trees, and lawns, ensuring their health and vitality.
- Assist in planting seasonal flowers, shrubs, and trees in accordance with the site’s landscape design plan.
- Identify and manage pests and diseases, using appropriate methods to maintain plant health.
- Ensure the site is kept clean by removing litter and managing garden waste appropriately.
- Perform basic repairs and maintenance to hard landscaping features such as pathways, edging, and garden furniture.
- Monitor and maintain irrigation systems to ensure efficient water use and plant health.
- Adhere to all health and safety regulations, ensuring a safe working environment for yourself, team members and the public.
- Regularly report to the Head Gardener on the status of the site, including any issues or improvements needed.
Key Skills:
The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong work ethic, having the ability to work under their own initiative while taking pride in their work and completing tasks to a high standard throughout all tasks on the large site. An understanding of Health and Safety regulations is essential. A PA1/PA6 spraying certificate would be desirable, however not essential.
- Experience: A minimum of 2 years of experience in landscape/garden maintenance or a similar role.
- Knowledge: Strong knowledge of plants, horticultural practices, and landscape maintenance techniques.
- Physical Fitness: Ability to perform physical tasks in various weather conditions.

An exciting opportunity to join our 12 strong Gardens Team, set within the Grounds Department, at the Hurlingham Club. Each member of our gardens team has a wealth of skill and horticultural knowledge which they put to good use within our 42-acre Estate. Our overall aim is to provide the highest standard of horticultural practice across all aspects of our role and assimilate sustainable and ecologically positive practices within our daily routines.
Within the estate we have a range of planting styles, including an herbaceous border, formal rose beds and bedding, woodland, mixed borders, an exotic border, an historical English garden and a 2-acre lake with lakeside planting.
Situated in beautiful, landscaped grounds adjacent to the River Thames in Fulham, The Hurlingham Club is recognised as one of the world’s finest private member clubs. Since its opening in 1869, The Hurlingham Club’s gardens, croquet and tennis lawns and stately Georgian Clubhouse have made it a sought-after destination for exclusive sporting and social activities.
The Role
As part of our gardens team, you will be presented with many opportunities for professional development as well as working closely with a team of horticulturalists and industry professionals on a wide range of estate gardening practices. Hedging, habitat and woodland management, planting, meadow management, pruning and water conservation are a few of the topics our gardeners cover, as well as an understanding of IPM controls and irrigation systems.
The successful applicant will be given their own area of responsibility to maintain and develop. They will be expected to work on their own, in small groups and with the whole team on specific projects. They will need to use their initiative to enhance the plants under their care and utilise their skills for the benefit of the gardens and team. With an area of responsibility, each gardener must demonstrate good time management skills in which they can balance the demands of their areas with the ongoing, seasonal team tasks they will be
involved in.
Working Schedule
As Gardener you will work a 39-hour week, plus regular weekend overtime – one in three weekend mornings.
The Candidate
We are looking for a highly motivated individual who is experienced with estate horticulture and who has a high level of professionalism and horticultural knowledge. A specialism with aquatics, roses, exotics or indoor plants is desirable but not essential. An RHS Level 2 or equivalent qualification is required as well as previous practical experience in the industry, however more practical experience would be an advantage.
Previous experience in tractor driving and operating small machinery, as well as a spraying certificate PA1/6 would also be beneficial to any applicant, but not essential.
We offer a substantial and varied schedule of training including but not limited to in-house workshops, webinars, practical machinery training, garden visits and horticultural placements.
