Sole Gardener

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced and qualified Sole Gardener to play a key role in the management and maintenance of a beautiful private garden near Petersfield, Hampshire.  This position will suit a well-rounded and flexible gardener with good horticultural knowledge, an interest in trees and a willingness to carry out basic estate duties in addition to their main focus of the garden.

The property encompasses 7-acres with approximately 2.5-acres devoted to formal gardens.  Major works are being carried out by a landscaping firm at present, with general garden maintenance also being undertaken in the interim.  A lawncare specialist manages a golf hole on the property and has been looking after the wider garden lawns.  However, their work here will reduce upon successful appointment of a Sole Gardener.

The gardens comprise extensive mixed borders, a kitchen garden, rose beds and woodland areas, a golf hole, swimming pool, wildlife pool, stream, formal pond, a tennis court, large flower beds/borders, a glasshouse and a walled garden and wildflower meadow in the making.  Two high mixed hedges will require maintenance with machinery from platforms and as such, the Sole Gardener must be physically fit and strong with good a level of stamina.  A large number and variety of trees are located within the property, ranging from young to veteran.  Numerous ash have been lost to the ash die back fungus so replanting will be carried out to repopulate the area.

Some very large beech trees as well as scots pine, horse chestnut, lime and yew, fruit trees and specimen conifers will require basic checks for health/safety.  Applicants for this role should therefore have an interest in trees and be able/willing to notice apparent defects/pathogens and research accordingly before notifying professional arborists if necessary.  The desire to learn and develop your knowledge in this area is more important than professional qualifications and experience, as horticulture and garden management remains the primary focus of this position.

Applicants must be happy to carry out general garden maintenance and will need strong horticultural knowledge, including that of herbaceous border management and kitchen gardening.  Species-specific pruning knowledge is essential as is an ability to prioritise the workload efficiently.  General estate duties will be required though applicants are not expected to have specialist knowledge in this area, just a positive and helpful attitude.  Applicants will ideally hold an academic horticultural qualification at Level 3 or above/equivalent with demonstrable experience on private estates, though those with extensive hands-on experience in each of the stated areas of horticulture will be considered.  Spray certificates (PA1/PA6) are desired but not essential at this stage.  Applicants will need a full driving licence and their own transport due to the rural location of the property.

Sole Gardener

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced, qualified and physically fit Sole Gardener to join a stunning historic private estate in Hampshire on a full-time permanent basis.  This role will suit a knowledgeable horticulturist with extensive hands-on management experience on large private estate gardens, as well as a proven ability to work well on their own.

The 300-year-old property is owned by a knowledgeable gardener and has been managed for nearly nine years by an employed Sole Gardener.  The garden has been lovingly maintained and developed over this time, such that it is of paramount importance to source a genuinely enthusiastic and knowledgeable person to continue the legacy.  The current Sole Gardener will leave the post in May and will be available until this time to ensure a smooth transition into the role for the successful applicant.

The gardens of 6-acres comprise expansive lawns, large beech and yew hedges, young, mature and veteran trees, large herbaceous perennial borders, shrubs, a small orchard, a swimming pool, a tennis court and a Georgian walled garden containing 800 David Austin roses.  Wisteria and climbing roses decorate the ancient walls and will require delicate and timely pruning to ensure their continued form.  The property does not contain a kitchen garden or a glasshouse so skills associated with such management will not be required for this role.  The garden is maintained to a very high standard and requires efficient planning and an associated knowledge of plant behaviour throughout the seasons.

The garden has been successfully maintained by the current Sole Gardener for the past nine years, however specialist contractors will be brought in where necessary, i.e. for aerial tree work, however the successful applicant should be confident in their ability to undertake the management of large hedges (and associated equipment) and in their pace of work in general.  Attention to detail and a high standard of care is expected at all times.

Suitable candidates will hold demonstrable experience in a similar role as well as academic horticultural qualifications at Level 2, ideally Level 3 or above.  Experience in species-specific pruning is essential, as is good general plant knowledge, spray applicators, ride-on cylinder mowers and basic machinery maintenance.  A lawncare contractor attends the property twice yearly, however the Sole Gardener should be experienced in this area to ensure a good standard of health on a year-round basis.  A full driving licence is required as, although on the edge of a small village, the property is located rurally.

This is an excellent opportunity for a suitably qualified and experienced gardener to join a stunning historic private estate in a beautiful part of the country, on a full-time permanent basis.  The owner is a knowledgeable garden lover and looks to build a long term, positive, and enjoyable working relationship with the successful candidate.

Head Gardener

Ref - EC10687

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a qualified and experienced Head Gardener to lead a small team on a beautiful private estate near Alresford, Hampshire.  The welcoming family currently employ 2 skilled gardeners and are looking for a knowledgeable Head Gardener to come onboard to manage the garden and lead the team.

Built in the late 1700’s, the Grade II listed house is situated within 45-acres of parkland with formal gardens of approximately 13-acres, originally laid out by Richard Woods; a contemporary of Capability Brown.  The grounds have been painstakingly restored to the original plans in several phases over the years, most recently since 2004 by the current owner, with more sensitive restoration planned.  The property owners are passionate about the gardens, such that only tree, shrub and flower species available in the mid-1700’s, have been used in the restoration.

The formal aspect of the garden includes expansive lawns, hedges, a pool, herbaceous borders, a large kitchen garden, mixed beds/borders, ornamental shrubberies, young and mature/ancient specimen trees with woodland walks, topiary, a considerable Ha-ha and much more, all with impressive vistas across the estate and surrounding South Downs.

As Head Gardener you will be responsible for all aspects of the gardens and therefore need to be self-motivated, proficient at organising your own routine and staff under your supervision whilst being able to remain flexible in your approach to work.

Applicants for this position will ideally be academically qualified to Level 2 or above and are confident in their plant knowledge, with excellent attention to detail, can implement good health and safety in the garden, and are driven to inspire a committed team of gardeners. Spray certificates (PA1/PA6) and chainsaw competence certification are desirable and a full clean driving licence, good physical fitness and experience with a wide range of garden machinery are required for the role.

This is an exciting opportunity for a qualified and experienced Head Gardener to join a historically significant estate and garden, lead a driven team, and work for friendly and interested employers.

Skilled Gardener - EC10384 - This position has now been filled

An attractive opportunity has arisen for a self-employed Skilled Gardener to play a key role in the ongoing development and maintenance of a stunning Gertrude Jekyll orientated garden near Andover in Hampshire, on a 2-day per week basis.  This opportunity is open to self-employed gardeners who can demonstrate a thorough understanding of garden management, with excellent plant identification and time management skills.

The 1.5-acre arts and crafts garden was designed by Gertrude Jekyll and is approximately 100 years old.  The owners live on the property full-time, are keen and knowledgeable gardeners, and whilst they currently benefit from one other member of staff with regard to estate and garden maintenance, the amicable departure of their knowledgeable plantsman gardener (to Scotland) leaves an opportunity for a likeminded new incumbent.

Applicants for this role should be self-employed gardeners currently living within a one-hour commute of the estate, which lies approximately 5-miles east of Andover.  The garden has a happy atmosphere and comprises a wild garden, herbaceous garden and large borders, a gravel garden, gazebo and pond, roses and bulbs, with a strong focus on flowers throughout.  There is no kitchen garden or glasshouse, so associated propagation and vegetable/fruit growing will not be required of the successful candidate.  Hedge cutting will be carried out by external contractors, leaving the successful candidate to focus on the finer horticultural duties within the garden.  A no-dig approach is used to manage weeds, which works very well on the site and should be continued at the wish of the owners.  The successful applicant will be required to work from ladders at times and must be used to working on and managing large herbaceous borders as well as a diverse range of ornamental plants, shrubs and flowers.

Suitable candidates will be self-employed, used to working alone, and should hold an academic horticultural qualification and/or extensive gardening experience, possess good plant identification skills, good physical fitness, an ability to operate and have a thorough understanding of seasonal garden management as per the above factors.  A driving licence is an essential requirement of all applicants due to the rural location of the property.

This is an excellent opportunity for a local freelance gardener to become involved with a n historic and impressive garden, on behalf of genuinely enthusiastic and welcoming gardener owners.  A generous hourly rate is offered in line with experience, with discretionary bonuses paid in recognition of the gardener’s commitment and quality of work.
