Sole Gardener

Sole Gardener required

A unique position has arisen on a beautiful private estate near Winchester for a hands-on, experienced Gardener with strong plant knowledge, to help complete the re-establishment of the garden.  This is a full time, permanent position, with a two-bedroom cottage offered to the successful candidate. Please note that dependents are not accepted with this property.

The property itself is surrounded by expansive views and is set within 120-acres of land (used primarily for livestock and managed by a neighbouring farmer) in the beautiful Hampshire countryside, approximately 8-miles east of the historic city of Winchester.  The 3-4-acre garden offers potential for the next phase that would incorporate creative input of the successful candidate in conjunction with the owners’ ideas.

Within the past few years there has been the creation of structures, including a flint Ha-ha, terraced lawns, York stone paving, yew hedging, a roomed and walled rose garden with climbers and planting of large box head limes into a sunken garden.  Existing areas include a spring garden, large planting of camassia, maturing trees, long grass with mown paths, orchids, and wildflowers in recently sowed meadows.  Plans to plant an orchard are being discussed as well as trees in the wider landscape, so the successful applicant would be involved with this from the start of their employment. Future projects include broader shaping of various aspects of the garden to amplify a traditional Georgian estate with a slight contemporary slant for which a successful candidate would be expected to contribute. The grounds include a swimming pool and tennis court which will require basic maintenance.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced and flexible Gardener with good physical fitness and plant knowledge to play a leading role in enriching the classical nature of the re-established gardens.  The property is in a beautiful location, amongst parkland with far reaching views to the South Downs.

The ideal candidate will hold spray and chainsaw certification and demonstrable gardening experience on private estates and/or horticulturally diverse gardens. Academic horticultural qualifications are desired.  The ability to operate and carry out basic maintenance of garden machinery is essential, as is possession of a full UK driving licence.  Basic Arboriculture knowledge will be of benefit to ensure successful development and care of young trees.

In addition to gardening duties, the new Gardener should be willing to undertake general estate management tasks including interaction/managing any contractors that would come to site, as well as oversee tasks for a groundsman/handyman already living on site.  This vacancy is for full-time permanent and is available from the end of June, allowing for notice periods of the successful candidate(s).
