A self-motivated and driven Sole Gardener is sought after on a full time and permanent basis for a 5-acre private garden near Basingstoke, Hampshire.

This stunning Georgian house overlooks agricultural land to the south and the extensive gardens are made up of 7 rooms. These rooms include a walled garden close to the house and a various surrounding rose gardens, extensive lawns, herbaceous and shrub borders and a tennis court.   The eastern garden has yew hedges and topiary and mature specimen conifers leading east through a wisteria walk into the kitchen garden with raised beds, two greenhouses for growing vegetables and fruits and a cutting garden.

The friendly owners are garden enthusiasts. They are open to new ideas for their garden and would like a horticulturist with a positive attitude and a passion for plants to come onboard to drive their garden forward. Where the gardens have been open for charity events in the past, they would like to enhance the garden to potentially open for events again in the future. A leading landscape designer, Taylor Tripp, visit the garden twice per year to provide their input and the sole gardener will work closely with them.

Applicants should ideally have a minimum level 2 horticultural qualification and previous experience working in a similar environment. PA1/PA6 spray certificates, combined with experience growing fruit and vegetables as well as specialist pruning is required for the role. Due to the rural locality, a full UK driving licence and own vehicle is essential.

A full time groundsperson currently works onsite and they are responsible for the repairs, maintenance of the machinery, lawncare including scarifying and hedgecutting. The sole gardener will be responsible for the finer horticultural aspects of the garden and will work alongside the groundsperson.

Role purpose

Head Gardener

An experienced and responsible Head Gardener is required to work in an incredible private garden and estate in the New Forest.  It is an exciting opportunity to join the new owners as they take on the management of the existing garden and landscape as well as being a part of the development of several new areas of garden. 

The site is 180 acres of varying landscape from historic parkland, woodland, ponds, wetlands, equestrian paddocks and mixed grasslands. About 5 acres are the formal garden areas which are a mixture of woodland garden, mixed shrub and herbaceous borders, orchard, food production, composting areas & formal lawns. There are several greenhouses and a walled garden which will be undergoing a comprehensive redesign as part of the new works. These works will be undertaken by external contractors and overseen by the Client’s Landscape Designer who will also project manage them.  At the heart of the redesign will be food production as well as cut flowers for the house so experience in kitchen gardening is key.  There is also a tennis court and equestrian facilities on site.

The successful candidate should have strong horticultural knowledge, as well as extensive experience in both administrative and practical management of gardens and landscapes throughout the year and proven supervisory experience. The position is full time, and the head gardener will be required to work with and manage other garden staff and coordinate with external contractors, as required, for specialist horticultural works. They will be expected to manage, programme and oversee any external maintenance and service contractors for items such as the irrigation, potential grazing and various energy elements. It will also be necessary for them to gain a working understanding of the relevant equipment for day-to-day management. They will be expected to keep up-to-date records and daily diaries accordingly.

The Head Gardener will be expected to maintain the grounds to the highest horticultural standards throughout the seasons and have a sound understanding of general garden machinery, their uses and maintenance They should be willing to undertake training as required and qualifications in spraying (PA1 and PA6), hedge-cutting and chainsaw use would be an advantage. They should be good at budget planning and have a comprehensive understanding of the relevant Health and Safety Regulations, environmental management, manual handling and risk assessment. References will be required.

A unique position has arisen on a beautiful private estate near Winchester for a hands-on experienced Gardener with a talent for creative plant use, to help complete the re-establishment of a garden.  This is a live-in position with a two-bedroom cottage offered to the successful candidate.  

The property itself is surrounded by expansive views and is set within 117 acres of land (used primarily for livestock and managed by a neighbouring farmer) in the beautiful Hampshire countryside, approximately 8-miles east of the historic city of Winchester.  Due to recently completed landscaping work on the site over the last 14 months, the 3-4-acre garden offers huge potential for the next phase that would incorporate creative input of the successful candidate in conjunction with the owners’ ideas.   

Newly established garden features include a flint Ha-ha, terraced lawns, York stone paving, yew hedging, a roomed and walled rose garden with climbers, and an Orangery/garden room.  Existing areas include maturing trees, long grass with mown paths, orchids, and wildflowers in recently sowed meadows.  Plans to plant an orchard are being discussed, so the successful applicant would be involved with this from the start of their employment.  Plans are progressing to establish an intimate cutting garden/kitchen garden for the successful applicant to advance further this year.  An existing swimming pool will require basic maintenance and is now surrounded with new planting.

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a passionate and well-rounded Head Gardener in the New Forest, Hampshire.

Set within a wider estate, the private gardens and grounds cover approximately 60-acres and are maintained in accordance with organic principles.   The managed grounds consist of formal areas including lawns, herbaceous borders, a rose garden, a kitchen garden, orchard, glasshouses, wildflower meadows, a large lake, and surrounding woodland.  The estate owners keep a small number of animals that are managed primarily by trained staff, though your assistance may occasionally be required to help remove a pig from the vegetable garden or for haymaking in the summer, for example.

The hands-on Head Gardener who will manage, and work with, a small team in the general upkeep and maintenance of the grounds and gardens ensuring a high horticultural standard at all times. This role will also be integral to the ongoing design, development, and improvement of the gardens.

With support from the wider gardens team the Head Gardener is responsible for all aspects of horticulture and presentation of the garden, including but not limited to the following:

-Management of all areas of the gardens to include but not be limited to, the formal garden areas, vegetable gardens and greenhouses, lake and woodland area, wildflower meadows, orchards and water garden.

-Maintain the principles and practices of organic gardening and ensure that wherever possible, materials are re-used or recycled.

-Cultivation and harvest of fruit and vegetables for the house

-Maintaining gardeners’ office, greenhouses, garden buildings and Mess Room (clean, tidy and in good repair)

-Keeping equipment and tools in good order/repair

-Monitoring plant health in garden and park, flagging problems and applying appropriate treatments

-Manual watering of greenhouses and pots, including organisation of weekend and holiday cover

-Compiling a list of plants which need special attention and monitoring throughout the season

-Cultivating herbaceous borders to the expected standard

-Choosing, ordering, and planting of annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees as appropriate

-Sourcing and ordering of plant supply as required

-Growing of vegetables, flowers and herbs from seeds and tender perennials from cuttings

-Maintaining/pruning trees, hedges and shrubs

-Monitoring water quality and weed control in the lake, ponds and fountains

-Maintaining paths throughout the estate

-Liaising with and supervising external contractors (e.g., tree surgeons)

-Cultivating lawns and parkland meadows, including mowing / flail cutting where necessary

-Garden irrigation (ensure efficient system in place across walled vegetable garden and raised beds area)

-Managing garden and leaf compost system

-Ensure the team is working in a safe environment.

-Encourage team skill development, motivation, and communication.

The Head Gardener is accountable for the expenditure on routine garden supplies within the remit of the budget agreed with the employer at the beginning of the year, to include monthly reconciling of garden supply expense from invoices and credit card statement against the budget and negotiation of discounts with suppliers wherever possible.

Suitable candidates will hold academic horticultural qualifications at RHS Level 3 or above, though candidates with extensive relevant experience will not be discounted.  Applicants must be physically fit and practically minded, competent with a range of machinery and be able and willing to pass on their knowledge to the team at every opportunity.  A full driving licence is essential, with practical experience with tractors and their attachments, desirable but not essential.

Sole Gardener

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced and qualified Sole Gardener to play a key role in the management and maintenance of a beautiful private garden near Petersfield, Hampshire.  This position will suit a well-rounded and flexible gardener with good horticultural knowledge, an interest in trees and a willingness to carry out basic estate duties in addition to their main focus of the garden.

The property encompasses 7-acres with approximately 2.5-acres devoted to formal gardens.  Major works are being carried out by a landscaping firm at present, with general garden maintenance also being undertaken in the interim.  A lawncare specialist manages a golf hole on the property and has been looking after the wider garden lawns.  However, their work here will reduce upon successful appointment of a Sole Gardener. 

The gardens comprise extensive mixed borders, a kitchen garden, rose beds and woodland areas, a golf hole, swimming pool, wildlife pool, stream, formal pond, a tennis court, large flower beds/borders, a glasshouse and a walled garden and wildflower meadow in the making.  Two high mixed hedges will require maintenance with machinery from platforms and as such, the Sole Gardener must be physically fit and strong with good a level of stamina.  A large number and variety of trees are located within the property, ranging from young to veteran.  Numerous ash have been lost to the ash die back fungus so replanting will be carried out to repopulate the area. 

Some very large beech trees as well as scots pine, horse chestnut, lime and yew, fruit trees and specimen conifers will require basic checks for health/safety.  Applicants for this role should therefore have an interest in trees and be able/willing to notice apparent defects/pathogens and research accordingly before notifying professional arborists if necessary.  The desire to learn and develop your knowledge in this area is more important than professional qualifications and experience, as horticulture and garden management remains the primary focus of this position.

Applicants must be happy to carry out general garden maintenance and will need strong horticultural knowledge, including that of herbaceous border management and kitchen gardening.  Species-specific pruning knowledge is essential as is an ability to prioritise the workload efficiently.  General estate duties will be required though applicants are not expected to have specialist knowledge in this area, just a positive and helpful attitude.  Applicants will ideally hold an academic horticultural qualification at Level 3 or above/equivalent with demonstrable experience on private estates, though those with extensive hands-on experience in each of the stated areas of horticulture will be considered.  Spray certificates (PA1/PA6) are desired but not essential at this stage.  Applicants will need a full driving licence and their own transport due to the rural location of the property.

Our nursery is responsible for distributing high quality vegetable seedlings and potted herb cuttings to our sites across the south of England. We produce over 1500 trays of seedlings and 10,000 cuttings every year.

Based out of Head Office in Lyndhurst we are looking for an enthusiastic experienced person to join the team.   We are offering a competitive salary and excellent company benefits.

The main duties are as below:

  • Sowing, taking cuttings, potting on, and watering.
  • Contributing to and following the sowing plan.
  • Leading small team and training staff.
  • Maintaining a good relationship with hotel-based Head Kitchen Gardeners, liaising closely to organise deliveries.
  • Managing plant health – we are looking for a good knowledge of P&D as well as feeding the stock.
