Job Description:
Team supervision | Ensure team are on site on time, breaks are monitored, uniform and PPE are worn correctly and site is left in a good state each day in a safe and secure location. |
Reporting absence | To lead on compliance with absence reporting procedure, ensuring team communicate and absence is recorded correctly. |
Health and Safety | Ensure all Health and Safety criteria onsite is met. Report any issues to the Contracts manager and ensure reporting mechanisms are used. |
Supervision of deliveries | Oversee onsite deliveries. Ensure any issues are communicated ahead of time. To oversee safe delivery and off load of all deliveries. All materials are to be checked upon delivery. No operatives or foreman are to enter the delivery vehicle. Check the quality of stock, any defective/damaged stock i.e. twisted/broken trees are to be rejected. Inform your contracts manager immediately before delivery leaves. |
Site issues/queries | Ensure all issues/queries are reported to your Contracts Manager and the office immediately so they can be dealt with, with quality management in mind. |
Care of company property | Ensure all company property is looked after. Carry out daily pre-start checks to each tool that has an engine. Gardener - Live Out - EC7597
A motivated and driven gardener is sought after to manage and maintain the gardens of a newly purchased property in New Forest, Hampshire.
The property, currently undergoing refurbishment, is set in 25 acres of land with the vast majority being fields and meadows. The garden landscaping is due to be completed at the beginning of 2020 and the client is looking for a gardener to come onboard this year to work alongside the landscapers in developing the garden and then to maintain and manage the garden thereafter. The garden itself will be laid out as park land with a small area of formal gardens, laurel hedges and expansive lawns. There are established plants and shrubs that will be retained such as azaleas, rhododendrons and magnolia trees.
The ideal candidate will be organised, have a good eye for detail and complete the work to a high standard. Applicants must have good horticultural knowledge, ideally have completed a horticultural training/qualification and have demonstratable experience of garden maintenance. A full clean driving licence is essential and grounds maintenance related training certificates such as PA1 & PA6 and chainsaw would be advantageous. This position requires someone to take ownership of the garden and therefore be hands on, physically fit and proactive in their approach.
In addition, the successful applicant will have a good understanding of the use and maintenance of garden machinery and tractors as well as have good craft skills to undertaker minor repairs to fencing etc. The working week will be 45 hours per week, but exact hours will be flexible (around 8am - 4pm Monday to Friday). The position includes 4 weeks paid holiday to be taken at a convenient time for the garden.

A wonderful opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Gardener in the New Forest, Hampshire. This stunning Grade II listed private country house was designed by John Nash and includes two cottages, a gate house, a staff flat and 5-acre garden. The main residential buildings and associated gardens are nestled within 180 acres of parkland in the beautiful New Forest in south west England. The village of Bramshaw is a highly sought after location; close to Lyndhurst and the historic market town of Romsey. Candidates with a good level of all-round estate maintenance experience, i.e. machinery maintenance, swimming pools, animal care etc. in addition to garden maintenance, are encouraged to apply.
The property is under ownership of a young and friendly family of four who are actively developing the already stunning gardens. The main garden includes a cuttings garden, greenhouses, a vegetable garden to supply the house with a small amount of produce, formal lawn areas, hedges, mature trees, mixed borders, a pool and tennis court. Staff currently working on the estate include a Head Gardener, House Manager/Chef, Assistant Gardener/Nanny, Groom, Gamekeeper, Junior Butler and cleaning staff.
The role will involve general garden maintenance; hedge cutting, mowing, weeding, dead heading, pruning etc. as well as working with roses, the beds/borders, the cutting flower garden and within the kitchen garden. Applicants should have a good level of experience in general garden maintenance and a willingness to improve their general horticultural knowledge where necessary. The suitable candidate will be positive in character and be willing to work within a small friendly team, but should also be happy to work autonomously in certain areas of the garden where required. A spray certificate would be beneficial but is not essential for the role initially as training may be provided.
The successful applicant for this role will assist the Head Gardener in the routine maintenance, restoration and ongoing development of the garden on a permanent basis. Candidates will ideally hold a recognised academic horticultural qualification, good/basic horticultural knowledge and gardening experience, and be ideally from a private estate gardening background. Applicants should have good physical fitness and practical horticultural skills including competence with garden machinery.
Gardeners with good estate maintenance / DIY skills and the willingness to utilise them alongside their full-time role of Assistant Gardener, are encouraged to apply. The Landscape Leader will carry out tasks associated with creating garden improvements.
Main Duties
The main duty will be to complete garden works according to the allocated budgets, to required finishes and to achieve customer satisfaction. To manage assistants/contractors, to make best use of time and materials and other resources. Protect and promote the assets of the Company. The work is to make decisions about how and when work is carried out, who will do it and how. This is a working foreman role. You need to know what to do, be able to direct and motivate others while doing your own work and confident to manage the ordering of materials. Tools and vehicle will be provided. You need to be able to make good judgements about the factors that influence the success of the work. (weather, skills, time, customer expectations, professional standards)
Role and Responsibilities
- Mark out, dig and prepare bases for paving and driveways in compacted type one or concrete. Lay paving, blocks and stone using mortar. Build walls, free standing and retaining. Brick and block/render.
- Set out and erect fencing, fix trellis, build pergolas, build sheds, fix edging, lay decking.
- To identify and use tools appropriate to the task, direct other operatives in their duties. Undertake to use PPE at all times when carrying out any hazardous activities. Prepare a risk assessment of any activities which are deemed to be hazardous and present to the Proprietor.
- Ensure all operatives keep the site clean and tidy, control the use of materials and their storage to ensure the efficiency of the work operations and the safety of anyone in the work area.
- Be the person responsible for health and safety, first aid and recording accidents.
- Fill out a time record for each contract. Record any and all materials that were used in any contract as recorded in the contract document. Compile other operatives’ timesheets into the contract record.
- Fill out a personal timesheet daily with details of operations undertaken, location, materials used and total time.
- To oversee ordering and delivery of materials, check for damage, unload with due care, check all items correspond with paperwork, identify a suitable safe and secure storage area. Inform the proprietor of any anomaly. Check stocks of materials are sufficient for any given contract and ensure work does not stop from lack of materials.
- Advise the proprietor if there is a need to vary the contract. If the customer requests to change the scope of the work, to add more work or if he believes there is a need to vary the agreed work.
- Other actions that will be required: Setting out, operating tools, counting, measuring, digging, cutting, nailing, fixing, laying, building, rendering, erecting, planting, levelling, drainage and any other task that may be required in the renovation, or creation of landscape elements. All finishes shall be to recognised standards and specifications.
Measurables (KPI)
- Achieve customer satisfaction.
- Complete work within time targets and with few defects.
- All contracted work paid.
- All extra work invoiced and paid.
- Staff retention and training.
Measurement of the work will be according to customer surveys, photos, on site review and timesheet targets. A bonus scheme applies to this role and is paid quarterly according to these criteria.
