Set over 25-acres the centre boasts a fantastic plantarea with many of the products coming directly from their own nursery which provides 70% of all plants for sale in the centre. They also offer a comprehensive range of garden sundries, home and giftware, furniture and much more. Due to retirement the Directors are now seeking an Assistant Manager who will continue to support them in all daily operations.

Job Description:

As the Assistant Manager your primary responsibility will be to provide management support to the Garden Centre team, with customer service at the forefront of everything you achieve.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to -

  • Assist the Garden Centre Manager and deputise fully in their absence, including key holder responsibilities.
  • To help manage, motivate, and support a dedicated team of staff to ensure that sale opportunities and customers experiences are optimised.
  • Efficient and effective communications within the business to the Centre Manager and Directors.
  • Having a proactive approach in finding ways of improving the garden centre and motivating your staff.
  • Assisting, management and control of stock levels.
  • Understanding seasonal peaks and troughs
  • Implementing seasonal promotions and events
  • To create and achieve a sharp, neat, professional shop floor image of the highest standards using excellent visual merchandising skills.
  • Ensuring that the department adheres to all Health & Safety legislation.
  • To keep abreast of the latest trends and styles in garden centre retail, as well as being aware of competitor activity.
  • Assisting with the management of the EPOS system and other daily administrative tasks.
Key Skills:

As the Assistant Manager, you’ll need to be an experienced retailer with proven leadership qualities. Knowledge of plants and garden centre products are an advantage although not essential. The ideal candidate will be a strong communicator who can motivate the team to deliver with enthusiasm.

Part Time Gardener

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced, enthusiastic and committed gardener to work as assistant to the incumbent Gardener on a part-time basis, with a view to grow into the lead role. The estate totals 25-acres and is based near Fareham in Hampshire, initially the candidate will be working three days per week which are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.

The formal gardens which surround the main house consist of mixed herbaceous planting, roses, wall trained shrubs and climbers, mixed herbaceous and shrub borders, fruit trees, deciduous and coniferous mixed trees, clipped box hedging, various hedges, a lavender bed and recently planted specimen and coniferous trees. Extending into the wider estate, there is a lake of approximately 1-acre, extensive paddocks and fields, a vegetable patch consisting of three raised beds, approximately 2-acres of woodland, a small greenhouse and 8-acres of which are under vine. Alongside the incumbent gardener, the new part-time gardener will be expected to take pride in their work and maintain the gardens to a high standard.

Applicants will need to have proven gardening experience with a relevant horticultural qualification being beneficial. The successful candidate will possess a comprehensive knowledge of plants and the ability to maintain, improve and enhance a country house garden. In addition, they will be required to manage both the woodland area and the vegetable patch, with appropriate knowledge of pests and diseases. Tasks for this role include but are not limited to weeding, deadheading, trimming and provision of cut flowers for the house, care and management of herbaceous plants, shrubs, lawns, hedges, upholding health and safety regulations and recommendation of new garden projects.   

Previous experience and competency with a wide range of gardening machinery is a requirement for this position, with chainsaw and other certification being advantageous. A full, UK driving licence is essential for this role and proof of any machinery tickets held will need to be provided. Applicants will need to be self-motivated, organised and able to plan and prioritise their workload. The individual needs to be a ‘team player’, working as part of a small team as well as individually.

Sole Gardener

An excellent opportunity for an experienced Sole Gardener has arisen on a beautiful private estate in the New Forest. The position is full time and permanent and the Sole Gardener will work closely with an 8-time Chelsea Flower show gold medallist garden designer. This position will suit a qualified/skilled, physically fit, and enthusiastic gardener in search of a rewarding role in which to make their mark.

The estate covers about 14 acres, and the successful candidate will be responsible for about 6 acres of gardens surrounding the house. The gardens consist of extensive lawns, matured pleasure grounds, a walled kitchen garden (to be redeveloped) with wall fruit, span-roof greenhouse and potting shed. The remaining land is farmland and woodland. The Gardener will work closely with the renowned garden designer in implementing the design, redeveloping the garden as a whole including the kitchen garden and carrying out extensive planting.

Applicants will ideally hold a qualification in horticulture combined with previous professional experience as a Senior Gardener on a large private garden. In addition, you will need to have excellent horticultural knowledge in plant identification, pest and disease identification, pruning techniques and plant care. Experienced Gardener

A rare opportunity has arisen for an experienced and qualified gardener to play a key role in a beautiful private garden, designed by Arne Maynard.  This opportunity would suit a keen hands-on horticulturist with demonstrable experience in a similar role in a private estate garden.

The property encompasses 40-acres in total, with formal garden areas comprising a large orchard, yew topiary, box parterres, pleached beech trees, a large pond with water features, expansive lawns, mature trees and mixed/herbaceous borders throughout.

The successful applicant will join an existing small garden team and will be responsible for managing and maintaining the formal garden areas to a high horticultural standard.  The opportunity to assist with maintenance of the wider estate exists where necessary, which provides variation to the work and the opportunity to learn new skills. The gardener will be responsible for liaising with existing grounds team, planning and intermeshing projects. He / She will quantify and cost plants, materials and tools for purchase as well as monitor processes and results which will include flagging issues and providing options for improvement. It is important that records are maintained at all times.

Applicants should possess an academic horticultural qualification; ideally at RHS level 2 or above, spray certificates (PA1/PA6) or the willingness to acquire the ticket as training can be provided and/or extensive hands-on experience in large private gardens.  The ideal candidate will have good technical gardening knowledge including species-specific pruning techniques, experience with herbaceous borders, knowledge of seasonal garden management considerations, good plant identification skills, competence with a range of garden tools and machinery, and good physical fitness.

The successful candidate will have a keen eye for detail, will work to a consistently high standard and will be self-motivated whilst being able to adopt a flexible approach to their work. He / She will be able to prioritise and plan work efficiently and time plan daily, weekly and monthly tasks effectively. The ability to undertake basic machinery maintenance would be beneficial but is not essential.

A full UK driving licence and your own transport are required in order to commute to and from work as the property is located rurally.  A positive attitude and good sense of humour are essential, as the wellbeing of the team and general atmosphere on the estate are important to owners and existing employees.
