Sole Gardener

Sole Gardener (Part Time) required.

A unique position has arisen on a beautiful private estate near Winchester for a hands-on, experienced Gardener with strong plant knowledge, to help complete the re-establishment of the garden.  This is a permanent position based on a 4-day week.

The property itself is surrounded by expansive views and is set within 120-acres of land (used primarily for livestock and managed by a neighbouring farmer) in the beautiful Hampshire countryside, approximately 8-miles east of the historic city of Winchester.  The 3-4-acre garden offers potential for the next phase that would incorporate creative input of the successful candidate in conjunction with the owners’ ideas.

Within the past few years there has been the creation of structures, including a flint Ha-ha, terraced lawns, York stone paving, yew hedging, a roomed and walled rose garden with climbers and planting of large box head limes into a sunken garden.  Existing areas include a spring garden, large planting of camassia, maturing trees, long grass with mown paths, orchids, and wildflowers in recently sowed meadows.  Plans to plant an orchard are being discussed as well as trees in the wider landscape, so the successful applicant would be involved with this from the start of their employment. Future projects include broader shaping of various aspects of the garden to amplify a traditional Georgian estate with a slight contemporary slant for which a successful candidate would be expected to contribute. The grounds include a swimming pool and tennis court which will require basic maintenance.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced and flexible Gardener with good physical fitness and plant knowledge to play a leading role in enriching the classical nature of the re-established gardens.  The property is in a beautiful location, amongst parkland with far reaching views to the South Downs.

The ideal candidate will hold spray and chainsaw certification and demonstrable gardening experience on private estates and/or horticulturally diverse gardens. Academic horticultural qualifications are desired.  The ability to operate and carry out basic maintenance of garden machinery is essential, as is possession of a full UK driving licence.  Basic Arboriculture knowledge will be of benefit to ensure successful development and care of young trees. In addition to gardening duties, the new Gardener should be willing to undertake general estate management tasks including interaction/managing any contractors that would come to site.

Sole Gardener

Sole Gardener Required

Job Ref: EC64825

A fantastic opportunity has become available for an experienced gardener to join an important historic garden surrounding a listed country house embedded in a conservation Estate with strong, warm family values.  The estate is located in the southwest Hampshire and the position is full time and permanent.

The 2-acre garden consists of a kitchen garden and greenhouse for growing vegetables and herbs for the owners use and propagation - raised from seed and cuttings, cut flower garden, climbing roses, mixed beds and borders, lawns and swimming pool. There is also a considerable amount of hedging and trees within the garden.

The garden is flat and has free-draining sandy acid soil. It is kept mostly organic with some use of glyphosate and pyrethrum for pathways etc. The garden is open to the public through the NGS 2 – 3 times a year and the owners hold the occasional charity opening and events.

The successful applicant will be part of a friendly team on the estate and the gardener should have a positive attitude, work well with others as well as be self-motived to work on their own unsupervised.

Applicants should be experienced professional gardeners with good plant knowledge and creative abilities. Experience growing fruit and vegetables as well as specialist pruning such as rose and small tree pruning is essential for the role. Spray certificates and chainsaw certificates are a requirement and training can be provided as long as there is the willingness to acquire the necessary tickets. Sole Gardener

Sole Gardener Required

Job Ref: EC64726

An incredible opportunity has arisen for a Sole Gardener to develop the prestigious gardens surrounding a grade II listed property in village near Haslemere. Hampshire, with the objective to bring it back to its former glory. The position would suit a passionate, experienced and organised Gardener with good attention for detail.

The owners have a keen interest in their garden and have plans which they would like the Gardener to implement but also to have creative input, working closely with them to create beautiful spaces.

To the front of the house is a water feature with expansive lawns on either side of the driveway. There are a variety of mature and young trees around the property and a group of trees in the walled garden that will be moved to make part of an avenue in a different area. To the back of the house, the garden is divided into various rooms. The terrace will look out onto a water feature with hedging, topiary and various planted features. The walled garden will be developed to be both ornamental and productive and to potentially include raised beds for growing fruit and vegetable and a glasshouse. The swimming pool area will have various beds and borders, for which the Gardener will create planting schemes. Other areas entail walkways, lakes, orchard, woodland, and a parkland converted into a deer park.

The ideal candidate will have an eye for detail and a strong interest in getting involved in a rejuvenating and renewal project. The Gardener will be hands on, and in the initial stages, will take part in clearing and restoring e.g., overgrown areas. When the structural foundations are in place for the garden, the gardener will work on the design of the garden and be responsible for the care and maintenance of the grounds to a high horticultural standard.

Although a Sole position, the Gardener will be part of a wider team on the estate such as the farm team, estate manager and groundsperson. The groundsperson carries out the lawncare and hedge cutting, allowing the Gardener to focus on the finer horticultural aspects of the garden. Additional contractors will be brought in for tree surgery, building of the glasshouse, hard landscaping etc.

Applicants will have good plant knowledge; experience working in a similar setting and have creative abilities. Experience growing fruit and vegetables as well as specialist pruning such as rose and small tree pruning is essential for the role. Spray certificates and chainsaw certificates are advantageous but not essential as the gardens are kept as organic as possible and others on the estate hold a chainsaw ticket. A driving licence is required. References and a DBS check will be requested if successful.
