Sole Gardener - Live Out - EC7153 - This position has now been filled

Sole Gardener required

A rare opportunity has arisen for a Skilled/Experienced Gardener to take ownership of an historic private estate near Braintree in North Essex.  This beautiful and diverse estate encompasses 12-acres of grounds including an extensive arboretum.  Applications are sought from skilled gardeners with demonstrable experience of managing their own time efficiently from a hands-on perspective.

The estate has an impressive 900-year history, and although very little of the original building remains, the current building has largely been unchanged since 1699.  The gardens comprise a one-acre walled flower garden, a new ½-acre kitchen garden, a Japanese pond, a water garden, moat, small herbaceous borders, a rose garden, numerous mature and young trees within the arboretum, fruit trees (including pleached limes), topiary, various buildings and garden structures/features, expansive lawns, and two acres of woodland with several glades and groves.  The gardens are not run to organic principles, though chemical use is avoided within the kitchen garden and around fruit trees.  There are no glasshouses on the estate.

The gardens are relatively low maintenance, considering the size of the area, due primarily to the extensive areas of trees, lawn, and slow-growing shrubs.  The successful applicant will however need to be able to plan their work on an annual as well as daily basis in order to ensure effective use of their time and the associated high presentation of the gardens.

The ideal candidate will possess an academic horticultural qualification at Level 2 or above, spray experience/certification (PA1/PA6), certification and/or experience with chainsaws, experience of ride-on mowers and a full range of garden machinery, competency with plant nomenclature, good time management skills, attention to detail, good physical fitness and a positive attitude.  The role will initially be a Sole Gardener position, though there may be scope to enlist assistance during busy periods if deemed necessary.  Applicants with experience/knowledge of correct arboricultural practices, in addition to each of the above areas of horticulture, are encouraged to apply.

This is a rare opportunity to become part of the 900-year history of a stunning property and its surrounding gardens.  The young owners have a genuine passion for their estate and like to spend time gardening when they are able.  As such, applicants must be presentable and friendly with good communication skills as well as an ability to work effectively on their own.  A full driving licence and your own transport are required for this role as the estate is located rurally.

SALARY:       Up to £27,000 DOE
LOCATION:  Nr. Braintree, Essex
