Description

As a Parks & Countryside Officer at Maldon District Council you will be expected to carry out a variety of duties and tasks in order to maintain the grounds & infrastructure of our 25 parks and open spaces across the Maldon district to a high standard. These include the flagship sites of Promenade Park in Maldon & Riverside Park in Burnham on Crouch.

The Parks & Countryside team’s “annualised hours” means working 29 hours per week October to March, increasing to 46 hours per week during April to September, which are paid monthly at an average of 38 hours/week across the year (April to March). 

The role will also require you to work regular weekends/bank holidays as part of the team rota, with occasional additional paid hours available to support major events and Council activities.

Full Uniform and PPE will be provided as part of these roles.

About this role

The ideal candidate will have the desirable competencies listed below, although training will be given both to meet the basic skill/qualifications and as ongoing professional development.

  • Work in partnership with others to achieve high standards of grounds maintenance

We are a medium sized independent traditional family run Garden Centre serving the community for over 90 years. We have an extensive variety of excellent quality plants and horticultural products. Additionally, we offer a large range of garden sundries, home and giftware and a busy tearoom serving cooked meals. We are renowned for offering expert advice, with a focus on strong customer relationships. We sell hardy nursery stock, bedding plants, herbaceous plants, trees, and shrubs.  A manager is now required to join us, taking responsibility for running and improving the Plants Department as well as acting as duty manager for the whole Garden Centre.

Job Brief

You will work closely with our sundries manager to ensure the smooth general running of the garden centre as well as taking specific sole responsibility for the plants department.

As Manager, you need to deliver a high-quality service to customers, ensuring the plants are presented to a high standard. This is a very hands-on role and you will be required to operate a fork lift truck and accept deliveries, as well as help out practically in dealing with issues that arise in the Garden Centre such as IT and tills. This position would suit those who have already gained some experience in garden centre retailing with good plant and product knowledge. You will need to be enthusiastic about plant retailing, have a flexible and adaptable approach and be a good team player.

Key Responsibilities
  • Working with the Sundries Manager to ensure the smooth running of the Garden Centre.

An excellent opportunity has become available for a skilled estate worker to join a family-run private Grade 2* estate on the Essex/Suffolk border.

A passionate and driven all rounded Gardener is sought after on a full time and permanent basis for a beautiful grade II* listed private estate on the Essex / Suffolk Border.

Lambourne End Centre is looking for a Garden Instructor to work alongside the rest of the team; to manage the growing spaces and work on a daily basis with participants of the Food for Thought Programme, providing support and technical horticultural supervision.

The Centre is a fantastic 54 acre site in south west Essex which is full of opportunity.  The Centre’s scenic location in a rural setting, yet on the doorstep of East London’s urban fringe creates a unique resource. The Centre boasts residential accommodation and training facilities, outdoor adventure activities, a garden project and a working farm with dedicated environmental areas.  These are used to generate a wide range of programmes which promote and deliver personal development opportunities for young people, especially those at risk or struggling in traditional mainstream environments. All the programmes are designed to encourage team building, problem solving and communication skills, as well as build confidence and raise aspirations. 

The Food for Thought programme provides a supportive environment which helps people develop practical and life skills whilst gaining confidence, increasing self-esteem and feeling valued.  Food for Thought participants are (largely) young people who may have special educational needs, poor mental health including anxiety, or low confidence, and those needing assistance with transition into adulthood.

Suitable candidates should have:

-Experience of managing allotment style growing spaces (including inside growing spaces)

-The ability to plan a growing schedule that fully utilises  the growing season and provides regular work throughout the year, ensuring that there is a regular flow of produce into the Centre’s Farm Shop

-Experience of working with people with learning disabilities, learning difficulties and those living with poor mental health

-Knowledge of organic gardening and permaculture

The post is based on a 35 hour week and may involve some evening and weekend working.
