An experienced Head Gardener is sought after on a full time and permanent basis for a beautiful private estate situated in a Buckinghamshire village. The estate is comprised of a large historic Victorian mansion with formal lawns and gardens (5 acres) plus woodland and tenanted farmland totalling 110 acres. There is a sizeable walled garden with swimming pool, tennis court, and a working kitchen and flower garden.  There are several wooded areas that have been brought back in hand with further tree and shrub planting planned for the future.

The family has lived on the estate for 21 years and has lovingly restored the house and grounds to their former glory. There are a significant number of mature specimen trees that add to the ambience of the grounds. There is a full time Estate Manager and Under Gardener.

The successful applicant will have substantial practical experience of managing and maintaining extensive grounds and gardens. This is a hands-on role which requires not only strong physical attributes but the ability to lead and communicate effectively with co-workers. It will be a key requirement that the candidate can plan and implement seasonal works programmes as well as delegate duties to the Under Gardener. With the potential to further development the garden (planting trees and shrubs, landscaping, new flower beds, etc.) that will ensure that the job is varied and interesting.   However, it requires being able to plan in advance, and have a structured daily and weekly works programme.   The owner takes a keen interest in the estate development and will assist in planning.

Academic qualifications are preferred but not essential. The candidate should be skilled at operating and maintaining garden machinery, and have the requisite spray certificates, chainsaw and driving licence.

The hours of work are seasonal – high season: 8:00 am or earlier until 5:00 pm. Low season: 8:00 am – 4:00 pm (daylight hours). One hour break for lunch. Annual leave is four weeks with no more than two weeks to be taken consecutively unless agreed with the employer.

There is a dedicated 3-bedroom bungalow within the estate for the Head Gardener at a rental fee of £500 per month. The bungalow has a self-contained sun terrace, glass house and rear garden, with immediate access to the grounds.

Comprising 5,000 acres of rural North Buckinghamshire countryside, this historic family-run private estate provides a wide range of service offerings to the public and businesses.  This new vacancy is a hands-on role where you will be required to plan, estimate, and implement work schedules and get involved with numerous aspects of looking after the outdoors of the Estate.  The successful applicant will find themselves dividing their time between working outdoors with the team on regular maintenance tasks or projects and working in the estate office to carry out necessary administration and paperwork.

The estate is a diverse operation where maintenance of the grounds and landscape is linked with the farming, let property, visitor attraction and events enterprises on the estate and as such, the successful applicant’s work will in part support the success of these departments as well as keeping the appearance of the estate to an acceptable standard.

The nature of the work is wide-ranging and diverse.  The role would suit applicants with a background in grounds maintenance, landscaping, or countryside management.  A blend of experience in landscape construction (hard and soft), landscape and grounds maintenance, contracts management and horticulture would suit this role.  A horticultural qualification would also be beneficial.  The estate’s landscape department is equipped with a range of tools and machinery and the successful applicant will be responsible for ensuring machinery is appropriately maintained. Experience of work planning and supervision of labour, as well as practical ability, is essential.  Proven skill in assembling and working to budgets is desirable.  Experience of project management and costing/estimating projects would be an advantage.  A full driving licence and experience of operating landscape, grounds and garden machinery is essential to this role.   

Reporting directly to the property owner, the Grounds Manager will be responsible for a team of three as well as for contractor supervision where necessary.  Applicants with staff management supervision experience are therefore preferred.

Currently a team of three, the owner is looking to grow the business to a team of eight horticulturalists over the next couple of years. An excellent opportunity has arisen for a knowledgeable and experienced Garden/Grounds Manager to take the lead on a prestigious site near High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.  This role would suit a diplomatic, presentable and well-rounded Head Gardener with a desire to utilise their skills and develop a respected site on a permanent basis.

The property covers approximately 100-acres and comprises expansive areas of lawn and woodland with sports fields and ornamental areas.  The gardens include mixed beds/borders with herbaceous and perennial planting, climbing plants, shrubs, young and mature trees, a green roof, wildflowers, a small orchard, a pond and various sports fields.  The property is located rurally and is surrounded by fields and paddocks; managed by local farmers.

The successful applicant will manage and work alongside another two other gardeners in working towards objectives for the extensive site, including the pond, sports lawns and wildflower meadow, as well as general maintenance and development of the property. 

Applicants will ideally hold an academic horticultural qualification with demonstrable experience of managing large gardens or grounds, and of managing gardeners directly.  Candidates must be confident in their plant knowledge and in their use (and basic maintenance) of garden machinery, must have good physical fitness and have an ability to work to a high standard at all times.  Suitable applicants will be well-versed in working to established health and safety standards within the industry and will be able to ensure gardeners under their management comply to the same standards. Though chemical use is kept to a minimum, the garden areas of the estate are not managed organically and as such, chemical spray certificates are desirable but not essential as training can be provided.  A full driving licence and your own transport are required for this role. 

The successful applicant will be responsible for lawn care (mowing, edging, feeding, scarifying, aerating, watering and weeding), planting and pruning, maintenance of the flowerbeds and wildflower meadow, basic maintenance of all garden equipment, plant pest and disease management where necessary, management of the irrigation system and will be expected to contribute significantly to the development and ongoing improvement of the garden aesthetics, as well as efficiency in garden management overall. 

As Head Gardener, the main responsibilities of this role are to map out a plan of action and a garden management plan of how to best manage the gardens in the short, medium and long term.  Applicants should possess excellent management skills as the responsibility for developing a small team will play a key part of the role.  

Summary of Responsibilities:
  • Lead and manage a team of two experienced grounds staff.
  • Deliver practical and flexible planning in both daily and seasonal work.

Detailed Duties:
  • General horticulture; planting, watering, weeding, irrigation, pruning and small tree work, topiary and small box hedging, leaf clearance and border work across the site.
  • Maintaining the lawns, playing fields and hard-court areas to a high standard, ensuring they are safe and fit for purpose. This will involve top dressing, weed control and other such duties.
  • Ensure that at all times the presentation of the borders, shrubs, hedges and flowerbeds is of the highest order, paying particular attention during the time leading up to high profile events.
  • Arrange the marking out of pitches for various sporting events.
  • Maintaining the environmental area to a safe and healthy condition using a variety of horticultural techniques and specialised equipment.
  • Carry out basic maintenance and first-line repairs of the mechanical equipment, ensuring that all grounds equipment is maintained to a safe and serviceable condition and workshop facilities are kept clean and tidy.
  • Assist with traffic management and parking for major events at the site; cover traffic duties when required, on an infrequent basis, i.e. when security staff are off.
  • Manage the annual woodland plan and ensure associated areas are safe.
  • Liaise with and monitor contractors as required.
  • Ensure the safe use, storage, calibration and disposal of pesticides, herbicides, fuel, oils and other similar substances including regular review of risk assessments and COSHH data.

  • This is a physically demanding role, so applicants must be willing and able to be involved in the maintenance and development of the grounds, outdoor facilities, gardens and landscaping with this in mind. 
  • The successful candidate should be able to evidence their reliability and be amenable to some flexibility in working hours according to the needs of the seasonal workloads. 
  • Punctuality is an important part of the function of the grounds department as well as a methodical approach to day to day work and the ability to prioritise workloads. 
  • The post holder will be a responsive and willing individual, with good communication skills as an essential part of the busy and capable team.
  • The successful candidate will be courteous and helpful to all others on site at all times.
Desirable Skills and Certificates:
  • NPTC Pesticides PA1,2 & 6 Spraying Licence.
  • NVQ Level 3 Qualification Amenity Horticulture and Sports Turf Management or IOG National Diploma Level 3 in Turf Management or BTEC/HND/HNC in Turf Management or equivalent.
  • Registered member of IOG (Institute of Groundsmanship).
  • Training and certification in Health & Safety, COSHH, Manual Handling, Risk Assessment and First Aid.
  • Training and certification in forestry/arboriculture and/or use of chainsaws.
  • Training and certification for all types of grounds machinery use.
Principal Terms of Service:
  • 40 hours/week.
  • Flexible planned daily hours to support the needs of the site during operational times.

Our client is a leading supplier of mature trees and instant hedging to the landscape industry. From their nurseries close to the M25 they provide a specialist service to their clients which includes expert advice on products as well a complete transport and installation service. Well known within the industry their client base consists mainly of Landscape Architects and Garden Designers as well as high end private customers.

A position has become available for a Planting Team Supervisor for projects based in the South East.

Job Description:

The role will involve leading a team of operatives planting semi-mature trees and instant hedging. Most of the work is based in the Buckinghamshire area but some jobs will involve staying away overnight.  Your duties will include:

  • Effectively leading, motivating and training other team members
  • Planting of semi-mature trees to correct horticultural practice
  • Use heavy machinery for transporting the trees and hedges such as mini- excavators and telehandlers
  • Have good understanding of site health and safety procedures
Key Skills:

Candidates should have proven experience with leading a team by example. You will have previous experience with planting large trees and instant hedges and completing projects to a high standard. Candidates should be physically fit and happy to be working outdoors at all times of the year. You will be a good communicator and reliable and well presented. Candidates should have a horticultural qualification and an SSSTS and first aid certificates.

Machinery tickets and the ability to tow trailers will be an advantage however training will be available for the right candidate.

Hours are 40 hours per week paid on an hourly rate of £12.50- £14 ph (DOE). Over time is available at time and a half, typically 4-12 hours a week in the busy periods. Holiday is 28 days including Bank Holidays per year.

The ideal candidate will be assisting the Senior Estimator in his duties and will have a professional and proactive approach. They will be an effective communicator and be willing to learn new skills in tender preparation.

This role would suit a candidate seeking a career opportunity in the Landscaping industry with the ability to make the role their own and take ownership of their day to day responsibilities.

Job Description:

  • You will accurately measure PDF drawings using software such as Bluebeam or Quickscale (training will be provided), produce tender documents for pricing purposes, which reflect the requirements of the client in accordance with specifications.
  • Assist the Senior Estimator in making sure all tender deliverables are met and a strong proposal is put together for the bid submission to the client.
  • You will send out enquires and request quotations to our supply chain in line with the specification requirements by the client.
  • Fill out and update PQQ documentation for our existing and new supply chain customers.
  • Download tender Documentation from tender portals sent across by clients and place on file for review by the Senior Estimator and Managing Director.
  • Updating the tender register with new enquires and keep records up to date.
  • Chasing clients for updates on our bid submissions.
  • Maintaining strong relationships with existing clients and helping to build new relationships with new clients.

Key Skills:

  • Educated to Degree/OND/HND or similar in construction, quantity surveying, hard or soft landscape construction, Horticulture is desirable.
  • Microsoft Office skills and experience (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and basic IT skills are essential.
  • Good organisational skills and time management to help meet tender deadlines.
  • Good communication skills.
