The 1 acre walled garden has been converted from having a tennis court to include various beds and space to create a productive kitchen garden which will be maintained using a no dig method. The garden is currently being maintained to a good standard and is tidy and well looked after.

The role would suit someone hands on and physically fit who is able to work alone and has the experience to maintain the garden to a high standard. Although a sole position focusing on the garden, applicants should be a good team player and enjoy working and being part of a wider team on the estate.

Ideally candidates will have a horticultural qualification or equivalent and proven practical experience managing the routine maintenance and development of the garden. The ability to operate and maintain a wide range of garden machinery is essential and tickets such as spraying, strimming, chainsaw and tractor-driving certification would be advantageous. The new gardener should be willing and confident to assist with general estate duties including strimming paths in the paddocks.

Senior Gardener

An exciting opportunity for a Senior Gardener has arisen to work within a stunning private estate, near Chalfont St Giles, Buckinghamshire. The current Gardener has been with the owners for a wonderful 18 years and due to their upcoming retirement, the client is now looking for enthusiastic and passionate horticulturalists to join the estate.

In its entirety the estate covers 250-acres, with 6-acres of both relaxed and formal gardens surrounding the property. These comprise of expansive lawns, an orchard, a walled garden which contains shrubs, herbaceous borders, espalier fruit trees, fruit and vegetables and a cutting garden. Other elements include a Victorian greenhouse, a variety of climbers and a Victorian lido which has recently been converted into a pond. The owners are extremely fond of their garden and have some upcoming projects planned, this includes the development of an area within the walled garden, as well as potentially creating another large pond. Therefore, this role would suit candidates who can offer their creative input and help deliver the new projects to the highest standards.  

Applicants should ideally hold a horticultural qualification combined with excellent plant knowledge and previous experience working on private estates. Experience in planting, pruning, lawn care and propagation is necessary for the role, as is competence in the use of a wide range of machinery and good craft skills. A full UK driving licence is essential. -To attend the initial visit to the hospice with the Director of Fundraising & Communications to assess the nature of the garden and what is required in terms of a designer and project budget.

-Obtain any further information from the hospice to assess the garden design and complete the hospice application criteria evaluation form and design brief.

-Research and source three competent designer(s) for the garden project in question. Brief the designers about the hospice garden in question and how Greenfingers Charity works.

-Attend a second meeting at the hospice with the Director of Fundraising & Communications, the appointed designer and hospice care team to complete the garden design brief.

-Review designers brief and proposal and recommend to Directors whether to proceed.

-Put in place a project management plan with the designer.

-Attend the consultation meeting with the hospice to progress initial design concept with designer and reach approval on final design with estimated costs ready for Board Approval.

-Ensure Designer obtains three build quotes for all garden projects regardless of size via the tender process. Review quotes for consistency of the specification.

-Recommend which Landscaper to use based on tender process criteria and notify Director of Finance & Resources who the chosen Landscaper is to enable the contract to be issued.

-Ensure all relevant documentation received from the Landscaper is received before the build starts, including a schedule of works and a timeline.

-Compile list of potential Gifts in Kind with designer.

-Monitor timeline and progress of project for payment purposes, which will involve visiting the site to check works are on target and for stage payment purposes.

-Ensure designer provides a maintenance plan for the hospice on completion of the garden project.

-Organise garden completion certificate and ensure all parties comply.

-Prepare garden report for the quarterly Board Meetings to be presented by the Directors.

-Six months after garden completion, attend and report on follow up visit to complete a garden evaluation report, source testimonials and images and review condition of the garden.

-Be responsible for the Garden Makeover program for older Greenfingers Charity gardens.

-Provide support and advice for the hospices regarding the maintenance of their Greenfingers Charity garden to ensure its longevity.

-To maintain effective networks and foster good communications with landscapers, designers all principal supporters, stakeholders, and the hospices we work with.

The team are looking to bring onboard two salespersons to work closely with the customers advising on products.

J191 - Planting Consultant                              £30,000 - £35,000 DOE

The planting consultant will ideally design trained either in garden design or landscape architecture. You will travel to appointments to offer an “at home planting and horticultural consultancy service” where you would meet with prospective clients, provide them with advice and planting recommendations for their requirements. This requires providing expert advice to customers on their site, followed up with a comprehensive professional report. It also includes managing planting contracts from enquiry stage through to completion; produce quotations, liaise with the clients, and the planting team and plant nursery.

Both the site consultations and planting contracts are generally domestic gardens, however, there are some commercial sites and there is much potential for growth. For this position, a car will be provided.

The Sales Advisor will be based at the nursery liaising with both trade and retail customers to sell stock and source plants for a wide range of customers. You will support ongoing sales efforts (including researching/prospecting, preparing client pitch materials and handling ongoing follow-up with prospects), manage/track client prospects and client outreach efforts as well as oversee and manage the trade client database and ensure regular contact is maintained at least once per quarter with each client. Network and add new potential clients on an ongoing basis. The business uses social media, and the sales advisor will be responsible for designing and uploading social media news stories, create and apply daily updates to all social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram).  

For both positions; Excellent horticultural knowledge is essential, ideally in ornamental hardy nursery stock including evergreen trees and shrubs as well as a full driving licence. The sales team will maximize the opportunities presented for additional work from existing clients, passing on the information to the Project salesperson/designer and assisting in providing quotations and actively converting them into orders where possible. A new vacancy has arisen on a spectacular private estate near High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire for a Skilled Gardener.  This role will suit an all-rounded horticulturist with drive to utilise their horticultural knowledge and experience on a full time and permanent basis.

The majestic eighteenth-century house is surrounded by 80 acres of land including parkland and paddocks. The main gardens consist of various terraces with different planting schemes, formal bedding, rose borders surrounding the house and a walled kitchen garden with raised beds to grow a variety of fruit and vegetables as well as provides shelter to an area that exemplifies ornamental gardening through each of the four seasons.  Great expanses of lawn, mature and young trees, lavender pathways, and ornamental planting all highlight the traditional English landscape. 

The skilled gardener will work alongside a groundsman to care for the garden with great attention to detail. Outside contractors assist with the parkland and paddocks. Suitable candidates for this role will ideally hold a horticultural qualification and / or practical experience in private estate gardens.  The focus of this role is fine horticulture, so excellent plant identification skills are essential in addition to a thorough understanding the seasons.

Applicants should be flexible, energetic and cooperative in nature with a positive and friendly outlook.  The owners try to be organic as possible in the garden, though chemicals are used in some areas and therefore some experience of chemical-free gardening methodologies would be helpful as well as spray certificates would be an advantage. Good physical fitness and an eye for detail are required, with an ability to work well within a team as well as alone where necessary.
