Due to continued success within the company, a career opportunity has arisen for a promising Junior Gardener to help carry out general garden maintenance on a variety of properties, to the company’s usual high standard.  The company offer career progression opportunities for hard-working and committed employees.

Suitable candidates will have some knowledge and a genuine interest in herbaceous plants, shrubs, basic pruning techniques, and the ability to identify weeds.  Spray certificates PA1 and PA6 would be beneficial but are not expected at this time.  Applicants with experience with common garden machinery is desired; strimmers, mowers, hedge cutters and blowers. 

Candidates should have a positive attitude towards their work and colleagues, be reliable, punctual, physically fit, and well presented.  Applicants will ideally hold a full UK driving licence.

Sole Gardener (Live Out) - EC4610 - This position has been filled

A unique opportunity for an experienced Sole Gardener has just become available for an equally unique modern private estate, situated in an area of outstanding beauty. The grounds are set within 130 acres of farmland, pasture and beech woods. The garden contains 4/5 acres of lawn with a 0.2 acre walled vegetable garden and greenhouse for propagating and growing produce for the family.

The owner is currently seeking a full time Sole Gardener to join the small dedicated team of staff on the estate, which includes a housekeeper and hands-on Estate Manager, the latter of whom will provide assistance to the Sole Gardener when required. Suitable candidates must have good practical skills, be able to operate and maintain large machinery, have previous work experience in propagating, growing vegetables and woodland maintenance. The successful candidate will be able to carry out work to a high standard with no supervision in a tidy efficient manner with a professional approach. Formal gardening qualifications are preferred, but not mandatory.

The majority of the work will be within the walled garden, but candidates must also be willing to undertake grounds keeping to include mowing, strimming, tree maintenance, hedge cutting etc. The owner spends part of the year overseas, so the availability of flowers and produce from the garden must coincide with her being in the UK.

The owner is keen to promote a friendly and rewarding working environment, so it is important that you have a positive attitude with good communication skills and are able to get on well with all other staff members.

The working week will consist of 5 days; 35 hours per week, however some flexibility is required as weekend duties are necessary depending upon the time of year, in relation to the greenhouse specifically. Due to the rural location of the property it is essential that you have your own transport.

Our client provides Grounds and Estate Management in and around London and the Home Counties. They also have a new Tree & Hedge Nursery offering semi-mature trees, fully formed, instant hedges and fine topiaries. They offer Estate Management services for high end domestic clients as well as supplying and planting of semi-mature trees & fully formed hedges.

Job Description: 

The role will involve leading a team of operatives in maintaining gardens to a high standard. 

Your duties will include:

  • Effectively leading, motivating and training other team members
  • Complete various maintenance
  • Mowing, strimming
  • Weeding, pruning, mulching
  • Use of various horticultural machinery, large and small

Key Skills:

Candidates should have proven experience with leading a team by example. You will have previous experience with grounds maintenance or estate management as well as completing tasks to a high standard. Candidates should be physically fit and happy to be working outdoors all times of the year. You will be a good communicator, reliable and well presented.

Candidates should have a horticultural qualification, good plant knowledge and PA1 & PA6.

A full UK driving licence is essential and the ability to tow trailers is highly desirable.

The salary is based on 40 hours per week with overtime available.

Part Time Plants Person - EC3982

A part-time (3 days a week) role has developed for a plants person to work on a privately owned small family estate with 3 formal gardens, wildlife pond garden, small woodland and established borders and parkland style area.

The grounds cover an area of approximately 5 acres, and are a mix of mature and newly planted trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants, augmented by bulbs and annual flowers. Each of the 3 formal gardens have their own identity and the successful applicant will be required to develop these areas further by suggesting and implementing planting schemes. The owners are keen to have a garden that is a pleasure to view and walk and sit in.

Plant selection, propagation, and seed growing skills are essential, with knowledge of plant diseases and administration of treatments also required. The use of organic, companion planting and biological treatments is preferred to chemical administration in the first instance.

There is an established band of people taking care of the kitchen garden, lawns, hedges, and pond maintenance allowing this role to be primarily focussed on all aspects of planting, and plant care.

The role is for a self-employed person, 3 days a week.

Qualifications: RHS level 2 are desirable but not essential.
