Job Brief

Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for the day to day maintenance of high end domestic gardens along with overseeing a team of skilled gardeners.

Duties will include:

  • Planning and scheduling work
  • Following Health & Safety Guidelines
  • Mowing, hedge cutting and strimming
  • Planting, lifting, mulching, mowing, pruning, weeding, leaf clearing, sweeping etc.
  • Operating machinery, tools and equipment safely

Our client requires reliable, enthusiastic, positive and experienced individuals to maintain and exceed customer’s expectations. You’ll have excellent customer service skills, be naturally capable of demonstrating your knowledge and have core skills in all types of garden maintenance.

Key Skills 

Projects are predominately high-end private clients and as such the successful candidate will be friendly, well-mannered and presentable. You must have previous experience of managing teams and a good knowledge of working in gardens that require the need for attention to detail. In the role you will be liaising with clients and designers, so a positive attitude, excellent customer service and communication skills are vital.

  • A recognised Horticultural qualification of minimum Level 2 is highly desirable but not essential if experience and competence is evident.
  • PA1 & PA6 spraying certificates are essential.

Please note that a full clean drivers licence is required for this role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a passionate and suitably qualified gardener to join the team caring for a beautiful country estate, tucked away in a semi-rural location, just outside of Tunbridge Wells. The estate extends to 28 acres, comprising an impressive 19th century house and coach house, with an ornamental garden of just over 3 acres, woodland, pasture, and ponds. The property is owned by a delightful family, who employs a small team of gardeners to maintain the grounds.

The features of the garden are varied and include a cut flower garden, glasshouse, orchard, ornamental meadows, roof gardens, mixed and shrub borders, formal and informal hedging, topiary, roses, and a fine lawn. The property is used for beautifully curated events, creative workshops, and as a location for film and photoshoots. Also, the garden and grounds are occasionally opened to the public to explore, with an aspiration for this to be under the National Garden Scheme soon. There is a growing menagerie of animals, which the garden team help to care for, including alpacas, chickens, and bees.

The client is looking for an enthusiastic gardener to join the team. Ideal candidates will be willing to work alone alongside a team, self-motivated, creative with an eye for good design and have a good attention to detail and desire to achieve high standards. Applications would be welcomed from candidates with a level 2 RHS qualification (or equivalent), at least one years horticultural experience, knowledge and experience of using a wide range of horticultural machinery, along with a good awareness of health and safety in the workplace. PA1 & PA6 certificates would be advantageous but not essential for this role.

This is a full-time gardener position, working within a team that includes the Head Gardener, and two gardeners. The hours are 0800 – 1645, Monday – Friday, which includes two breaks, totalling 45 minutes. A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a driven and motivated Gardener to join one of the most outstanding gardens in the Cotswolds.

The extensive gardens and grounds have been developed by the gardening team and the owners over the last 32 years and exhibit a standard of horticultural excellence. The gardens cover 9 acres and include terraced lawns bounded by an embanked terrace and a shrub and timber belt, formal borders, ponds, walled garden and vineries, peach house, propagation house and glasshouses.

The newly-appointed Gardener will join a team of three, reporting into the Head Gardener and will be responsible for the maintenance and on-going development of the gardens. Daily tasks will vary but will involve a hands-on approach, with a particular focus being placed on the productive areas of the garden, such as the vinery, peach houses, and orchard, doing so with an organic and sustainable approach.  They will have the drive and passion to maintain the gardens at the existing high standards and work with the team on enhancing the garden as required.

Applicants should ideally have a minimum level 2 horticultural qualification, PA1/PA6 spray certificates, combined with good plant knowledge, excellent technical skills, and the ambition to continuously enhance their skillset and experience.  They will need to be organised and able to plan and prioritise their workload. Experience with propagation work and growing fruit and vegetables is essential, alongside strong knowledge of pest and diseases and the use of biological controls.

This is a role which would suit an enthusiastic, capable Gardener with a positive character. The role will involve working closely with the Deputy Head and Head Gardener. Good communications skills are required and the ability to work well alongside other team members. They should be prepared to work outside in all weathers and be good at operating a range of garden machinery.

A 2 / 3 bed accommodation is available for the successful applicant, should they be interested, on a short hold tenancy agreement, with a small sum payable per annum.

The ideal candidate will have a good understanding of plant types and good plant identification skills. An excellent opportunity has arisen on a private estate in Surrey, for an experienced Gardener to focus on the general maintenance aspects of the 12-acre garden, under the direction of a very talented and knowledgeable Head Gardener.  This role would suit a physically fit and experienced gardener with excellent attention to detail and a desire to take on a full-time permanent role on a stunning private estate. There is scope for modernising and developing the garden, therefore candidates with thoughts and ideas with regards to improving the garden are welcome.  

The mature 12-acre private garden is situated approximately 1.5 miles from Haslemere train station and comprises expansive lawns, mixed herbaceous and shrub borders, a natural pond and associated planting, a collection of rhododendrons, azalea, and camellia. Also, within the historic garden is a mature pinetum with an impressive selection of native and exotic trees including conifers, sequoias, mature pines and much more. A truly impressive collection of trees with at least 20 champion trees which are recognised by The Tree Register.  The gardens also once featured 1920’s Gertrude Jekyll rock garden and hot border, of which the backbone of the original design still remains. Surrounding the house is a variety of grasses with mixed herbaceous. They are trying to modernise the area around the house going down to the existing garden to blend in with the existing mature garden. There is also a greenhouse which is used for propagating when required and storing plants for container displays.  

Applicants for this position should be able to demonstrate experience and competence in garden maintenance tasks such as hedge cutting, lawn care/mowing, weed control, basic pruning techniques, and the safe operation of a range of garden tools and machinery.  Spray certificates (PA1/PA6) and chainsaw certificates are desirable but are not essential.  The successful applicant will report to the Head Gardener and will complete the small team of three, currently comprising the Head Gardener and one Assistant Gardener.

Applicants for this position should have experience in each of the above areas and must be flexible and helpful in their approach to private estate gardening. The grounds and gardens contain steep terrain; therefore candidates must be physically fit and happy to work outside in all weathers. Working hours are Monday to Friday, 08:00 – 17:00 with a 1-hour lunch break and additional morning break.  The position is offered with 20-days holiday per annum plus Bank Holidays. Candidates must live within commuting distance of the property as accommodation is not provided.

A lovely opportunity for an enthusiastic and experienced Live In or Out Head Gardener to manage the gardens and grounds of a historic country Estate in North Nottinghamshire.

The gardens include a 14 acre private garden for the family house which includes a kitchen and flower cutting garden, formal borders, variety of hedges, fruit trees, bulbs, lawns and woodland. Areas of the garden are established but the family are looking for someone who can work closely with them to further develop the garden. There is currently one, but due to be two, holiday let and a smaller secondary family residence whose gardens will need maintaining.

Part of the Grade 1 listed Parkland is open to the public and is currently lawns and woodland. However, along with a gradually restoration of a 5 acre Walled Garden, the public areas need enhancing so your informed technical and practical input will be required.

You would be responsible for all aspects of maintaining and developing the gardens and grounds with good all round knowledge in all areas of gardening, including cutting and propagation and ideally garden design. Excellent communication and the ability to work alone or in a team is vital as a full time assistant gardener will report to you and you will need to work closely with the family and other members of the wider Estate team. The role covers a large area of the Estate so good time management and organisation is essential to manage both daily but also seasonal tasks.

The ideal candidate would have the following qualifications:

  • Level 3 RHS Qualifications
