Sole Gardener - Live Out - EC3365

A superb opportunity has arisen for an experienced Sole Gardener to take ownership of a beautiful private estate garden, located in the idyllic rural village of Ditcheat in Somerset. This position would suit an experienced private estate Sole Gardener with good horticultural knowledge and physical fitness.

The large main house dates from the fifteenth century, and is surrounded by a 4-acre garden. Extensive lawn areas are framed by mixed and herbaceous borders, a range of shrub varieties and other ornamental plants including roses.  The south-facing front of the house contains planted terraces, box hedging and a parterre.

A one acre walled garden is located at the rear of the property, containing a variety of vegetable crops that supply the main house with food on a year-round basis. A small apple orchard produces a significant crop, such that the apples are processed off-site and made into juice.  A concrete tennis court and swimming pool will require basic maintenance at times, i.e. intermittent weed control and cleaning with provided equipment, respectively.

The ideal candidate will possess an academic horticultural qualification and/or a demonstrable level of knowledge and experience in a similar role. Spray tickets are desirable, and a reasonable level of garden DIY skills would be beneficial.  Experience in kitchen gardens is essential, as is a competence with the operation and basic maintenance of garden machinery; ride-on and pedestrian mowers, strimmers, hedge cutters and blowers.  Knowledge of seasonal horticultural practices and pruning techniques is required, and a good level of physical fitness essential. Hours come with some degree of reasonable flexibility, and will vary from season to season as expected.

The departing Sole Gardener has been with the family for the past nine years, and has formed a close friendly team with the part-time cleaners and housekeepers on the estate. The warm atmosphere is important to the owners, so applicants must be positive and outgoing with a friendly character.  This is a wonderful opportunity for an experienced and knowledgeable private estates Sole Gardener to take pride in a garden alongside a friendly estate team, and for very welcoming owners.
