Part Time Gardener

A rare and attractive opportunity has arisen for an experienced Gardener to work on a three day a week basis in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire.  A three-bedroom house is provided within the grounds for the successful applicant. Candidates should hold an academic horticultural qualification (ideally at level 3 or higher) and have extensive gardening experience on private estates.

This beautiful Georgian property in the Chilterns is surrounded by four acres of mature garden; one third of which includes a kitchen garden, although the majority of this area is now surplus to requirement. An additional one-acre paddock is located adjacent to the site and is mown regularly. A hot and cold greenhouse, cut flowers area, fruit trees, fruit cages and small vegetable plots provide small amounts of produce when in season, all of which would benefit from your expertise and assistance.  The garden also contains mature yew, beech and mixed hedging, extensive lawn areas, mature trees, herbaceous borders, wall-trained roses and a swimming pool. The client is a keen horticulturist and will be directly involved in terms of the overall estate plan, whilst also being strongly receptive to your advice and expertise.

Candidates must be willing to undertake additional duties such as the repairing of fruit cages, fences, filling potholes in the driveway and feeding and cleaning out the chickens once a month etc. where required.  The client is abroad for 13 weeks of the year (approximately 2 weeks at a time), during which they require the new employee to take care of their small friendly dog in the provided house as well as the property in general. Dog owners are more than welcome to apply, and applicants must be animal friendly; the owner has a small dog in addition to their chickens.  Your responsibility for site security when the client is away during the day/evenings and when abroad, is paramount.

Job Description

Purpose of Job:

  • To assist the Operations Manager with high-quality maintenance and care of Edgwarebury Cemetery.
  • To assist the Operations Manager in the delivery of graveside services including excavation and back-filling of graves with diplomacy, empathy and understanding during contact with the bereaved and with the public in general.
Organisation

Edgwarebury Jewish Cemetery opened in 1973 and the first burial took place in 1975. The Cemetery is managed by the Edgwarebury Joint Burial Board (EJBB) on behalf of the S&P Sephardi Community, West London Synagogue, Liberal Judaism, and Belsize Square Synagogue. The EJBB comprises of members from all four communities and is responsible for the general running and maintenance of the cemetery grounds.

Role Specific Responsibilities
  • To assist in, and complete the excavation of graves, including the preparation of the grave for burial and back-filling, using manual and mechanical excavation equipment as required.
  • To prepare graves for memorial consecrations.
  • To complete grounds maintenance operations including planting, pruning, weeding, spraying, grass cutting, hedge cutting, clearing litter and refuse, and landscaping.
  • To provide other grounds maintenance operations as required including memorial stone cleaning and renovations for which full training will be provided.
  • Drive a range of vehicles/plant as required and maintain in accordance with manufacturers schedules.
  • In addition to the usual range of tools and equipment, the use of powered tools, hedge cutters, generators, mechanical water pumps and light plant is required.
  • To maintain garage and container storage facilities in an orderly, satisfactory condition.
  • To undertake all mandatory training determined appropriate by the Operations Manager and Cemetery Director.
  • To give advice and direction to members of the public when appropriate, positively promoting the services delivered.
  • To provide a visible presence, preventing and reporting facility misuse.
  • To ensure that all work is performed in a safe and timely manner.
Flexibility
  • The post holder may be required to provide other duties to support the requirements of the Operations Manager. These will be consistent with the post and grade.
  • To carry out duties outdoors exposed to all weather conditions, including changes of temperature, wind, rain and snow etc. in accordance with EJBB guidelines.
  • Work hours will be required to be varied to attend to scheduled and unscheduled work demands.
Communication
  • The post holder is required to communicate effectively with staff, funeral directors, contractors, stone masons and site visitors. They are required to accurately receive, act upon and report information.
  • The post holder must also communicate effectively with colleagues and members of the public including the bereaved in an honest and sensitive manner.

Part Time Skilled Gardener

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a part-time Skilled Gardener to maintain an established flower garden to a high horticultural standard near Faringdon, Oxfordshire.  This position is offered to self-employed experienced gardeners in the locality, on the basis of 3 days per week to focus on the finer horticultural aspects of the garden.

Although the total size of the garden is 4 acres, the Skilled gardener will be responsible for approximately ½ an acre flower garden encompassing mixed beds and borders, cut flowers and a small kitchen garden.  The successful applicant will work alongside an experienced groundsperson who maintains the lawns, hedges, trees and tennis court.

The position would suit a horticulturalist with a real passion and interest in flowering plants. They will be established gardeners with demonstrable experience in managing and maintaining ornamental aspects of gardening.  Excellent plant knowledge is required as well as excellent knowledge of species-specific pruning, plant training and growing fruit and vegetables.  An ability to identify and manage plant pests and diseases is important.

A fantastic position has become available for a self employed, enthusiastic and experienced grounds person/gardener working under the direction of the Garden Manager and her small team on a beautiful Georgian estate near Winchester.

The family owned friendly estate comprises 800 acres of farm land, which is farmed and managed by a local family, as well as historic ancient woodland, sweeping parkland and a two acre walled garden designed by one of the country’s leading RHS Gold Medal landscape designers.

The successful applicant will need excellent references and a hard-working approach with great attention to detail. In return, the applicant will get the opportunity to be well remunerated and work with a friendly team, who are equally dedicated, in one of the most beautiful privately owned country estates in Hampshire that is maintained to the highest of standards.

A PA1/PA6 spray certificate and chain saw licence would be preferable but training in both these areas can be offered if necessary. Typically, the role will involve mowing, hedge and topiary cutting, weeding, pruning, pond maintenance, leaf clearing, general estate maintenance such as pool cleaning and car valeting as well as knowledge of garden machinery. The gardens are not open to the public but do have private charity garden tours during the summer months.

Above all, the successful candidate needs to be trustworthy, conscientious, wanting to work as part of a fantastic team, reliable, physically fit, self-motivated and have a great positive attitude. Someone who can be relied upon to work on their own when the Garden Manager is not on site and the owners are away. A full UK driving licence is essential.

Other elements within the estate include an ornamental pond, a tree lined avenue approach to the main property, a sour cherry orchard and over 27,000 native trees have been planted to create extensive areas of future woodland. 

It will be encouraged for candidates to wish to engage in an academic program to obtain a relevant qualification; either as an attendee at a local college or as a distance learner which will be supported by the owners. It will be subject to discussion with the candidates as to which of these options is best for the individual and employer.

Under the guidance of the existing Head Gardener, the Trainee Gardener will be learning a variety of grounds management practices, including but not limited to, formal lawn care, maintenance of irrigation systems, weeding and assisting with the installation of new plants. Other aspects of the role will involve general maintenance of the grounds including assisting with pool maintenance, keeping areas of the estate clean and tidy, machinery maintenance and monitoring of sewage treatment plant, borehole and gas and diesel levels.  

The job is, of necessity outdoors, with the requirement to work in all weathers and is physically demanding. Candidates will be able to communicate well and possess a friendly and helpful personality with a can-do approach to ensure the job is completed on time to a high standard.

The role is full time with working hours 5 days per week of 40 hours, 7:00am – 3:00pm, with a generous holiday entitlement of 25 days per year plus public Bank Holidays. Due to the remote location and the possible need to travel to college, candidates will need to hold a full driver’s licence with one’s own transport. Salary will be subject to experience but will be at least minimum wage (age related) however the client is happy to explore candidates who may have held some experience within the industry. The role will involve someone coming into the business and working within in all departments to gain a thorough grounding in how the business works and is run on a daily basis.

This will require a bright individual with a solid academic background being a good all-rounder who can demonstrate practical skills and is not afraid to be hands on when required.

The successful candidate will work closely with the production manager and managing director on a daily basis to support and learn all aspects of the business including sales. Once proven as a capable manager the successful applicant will look forward to future promotion. 

Key Skills:
  • Knowledge of ornamental plant production would be advantageous, but not essential.

  • Any certificates such as forklift use and PA1/PA6 spraying are advantageous. However, training will be provided if necessary.
  • Have the foresight to look at new varieties and keep ahead of industry trends.

An ability to engage with our wholesale customers in a friendly professional manner when required will be an essential part of carrying out your role in the future.

The successful candidate will need to live near the nursery or be willing to relocate.
