The role will involve working throughout the estate and assisting the team in the maintenance of the gardens/estate/house to a high standard.  A large part of the role is maintenance inside and outside the main house and other buildings i.e. clearing gutters, cleaning internal windows general DIY, valeting estate cars, raking gravel, swimming pool and tennis court/driving company cars.

The estate is varied and includes an extensive Kitchen Garden with a mix of vegetables, cut flowers, fruit and glasshouses.  Other features include herbaceous borders, ferneries, lakes and waterfalls with large lawn areas, hedgerows with rough grass areas that are in the process of being turned into meadows.

We are a small but very dedicated and friendly team and are looking for someone who is flexible and has experience in all aspects of garden and estate maintenance who is keen to learn about the gardens/estate and has a can-do attitude regardless of the job in hand. 

Experience with all garden machinery is a must, i.e. ride on mowers, strimmers, push mowers, hedge trimmers etc. A spray certificate would be an advantage as well as a chainsaw certificate, but training can be given upon successful completion of your trail period.

Job summary:

This position is suitable for a hands-on and physically fit individual who is experienced in general garden maintenance tasks which include but are not limited to weeding, pruning, planting, hedge cutting, grass care and maintenance. They will be required to keep hard landscaped areas such as water features and paths clean and clear with the use of necessary machinery such as pressure washers and knapsacks. An understanding of the correct horticultural practises and when to use them throughout the seasons is essential for this position. The successful candidate will need to be competent in the use of a wide range of general gardening machinery with chemical spraying and chainsaw licenses being advantageous but not essential.

This role offers the opportunity to assist the head gardener in purchasing and propagating plants from a local nursery as well as creating planting schemes for the formal areas. Assistant Gardener

A rare and exciting opportunity has become available for an Assistant Gardener to join an incredible private estate that has gone through a monumental restoration of the buildings, gardens and grounds. The position is a full time and permanent role and is based in Surrey.

The 500-acre grounds are entirely new, based loosely on the historic gardens that were lost in the 1960’s. The grounds have been designed to consist of garden areas, a few of those areas are as follows; Forecourt with formal parterre planting beds with hedges and a topiary yew centrepiece surrounded by close cut formal lawns. These beds have a changing display of bulbs and annual flowering plants to provide year-round interest and will require careful maintenance and regular replanting with the gardeners either ordering in or propagating and growing on the required plants. The grotto entrance is surrounded by coniferous trees planted to create woodland clump when viewed from the park. Shrub and herbaceous planting above the grotto to frame the sculpture/urn here. The garden walk is an elegant repeat of shrub and herbaceous ground including planting around the outsides of the garden terrace. The Southern walk becomes part of the Garden terrace with a seat looking back towards the south wing.

The Kitchen Terrace and Pool Terrace planting is entirely in large timber planters. Small clipped standard trees surrounded with seasonal annuals. Both terraces have the same layout, but the Pool terrace is in the shade of the house for much of the day whereas the Kitchen Terrace is mostly in full sunlight. The walled garden is divided into a quartered layout with gravel paths on the cross axis and around the perimeter walls. The central area is a simple meadow and fruit trees feature arbours in each quadrant. A new glasshouse has been built to accommodate house plants, seedlings and tender plants. The glasshouse backs onto the potting sheds. A working area with compost/ bulk materials storage ‘bins’ has been created and fruit cages and large areas of growing beds for cut flowers and vegetables. Other areas include the summer garden, spring and autumn woodland garden, lake walk with several planting areas on the terraces sloping down to lake, cascade steps, Japanese garden and arboretum woodland which will be a low maintenance area.

Applicants for this position will possess either some previous professional experience in hands-on gardening or a suitable horticultural qualification. Applicants must be physically fit and competent in the operation of a range of garden machinery. The successful applicant will work under the guidance and supervision of the Head Gardener and within a team of four but must also be able to work efficiently on their own as required. This opportunity offers the potential to be put through any qualifications or tickets which are deemed suitable – it is essential that potential candidates will have a strong desire and ambition to pursue a career in estate gardening.

The position is a 5-day working week and the salary provided is up to £25,000 depending on experience. A full UK driving license is required.

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an Under Gardener to join a knowledgeable and experienced Head Gardener in the maintenance of approximately 90-acres of estate grounds which belong to a high-end, family run commercial business park located near Towcester in Northampton.

In a rural village style, the park has formal gardens encompassing the community of commercial properties which are all newly built and constructed from reclaimed building materials – with the family also living next to the business park. The immediate gardens consist of various planting and a mixture of trees, lawns, hedges, shrubs and ponds. Extending into the wider estate, there are paddocks, grass walkways, woodlands, extensive hedges and lakes. The successful candidate will be required to maintain these areas to a high standard throughout the year under the instruction and assistance of the Head Gardener.

This position is suitable for a hands-on and physically fit individual who is experienced in general estate garden maintenance tasks which include but are not limited to weeding, pruning, planting, hedge cutting, grass care and maintenance. They will be required to keep hard landscaped areas such as water features and paths clean and clear with the use of necessary machinery such as pressure washers and knapsacks. An understanding of the correct horticultural practises and when to use them throughout the seasons is essential for this position. The successful candidate will need to be competent in the use of a wide range of general gardening machinery with chemical spraying and chainsaw licenses being advantageous but not essential.

This role offers the opportunity to assist the head gardener in purchasing and propagating plants from a local nursery as well as creating planting schemes for the formal areas. Additional duties included with this role include harrowing the liveries menage twice a month, ensuring that the bait boxes around the site are kept topped up and the maintenance of both water and woodland areas. This position requires a full, UK driving license.
