A part time vacancy has become available in the Chichester area for an energetic and capable gardener to work alongside, and in turn succeed, the current Head Gardener of this attractive 2-acre private house, featuring diverse gardens and creative planting. Designed in the 1930’s by highly regarded garden designer Percy Cane, and feature some of his signature touches, accompanied by new touches the owners have implemented since purchasing the property over 30 years ago.

The mature gardens have numerous features which will need to be maintained and developed by the newly appointed gardener, including a multitude of borders including herbaceous, a variety of trees, shrubs, two large main lawns, a walled garden and a walled swimming pool, which has well-planted surrounds. There is currently no productive element to the garden and this is not an something the owners are looking to develop in the future. The garden features both areas which have full sun exposure and shadier areas, which feature more woodland style and herbaceous planting. The garden feature neutral soil, with Rhododendrons and Azaleas thriving happily.

The owners are seeking an enthusiastic individual, who has demonstrable experience within a similar setting to maintain the stunning gardens to the very highest of standards, year-round on a 3 day per week basis. A Horticultural qualification would be advantageous, but is not essential, alongside the completion of industry related tickets, such as PA1/PA6 spraying.

Alongside the current Head Gardener, there is an assistant gardener present for 2 days per week to assist in basic tasks such as weeding and there are specialist contractors who handle mowing, removal of green waste, the clipping of large hedges, and any high tree-work required. Working hours will be 8 hours per day, 3 days per week with these to be mutually agreed and then regular every week year-round. The owners particularly need 2 of the 3 days to be Monday and Friday.

Gardener

An incredible opportunity has arisen for a knowledgeable and trained Gardener with experience to be part of the journey of the creation and development of a prestigious garden set on the grounds of a large Grade II* listed Georgian house located near Preston; with the objective being to create a new garden of national importance enhancing the setting and architecture of the house which was built in stages starting in the early 1700s and, coming with it, a rich history. This position is full-time and permanent. 

Previously being used for commercial use, the current owner purchased the property in 2020 with the view to create a beautiful, private, family home with a 5-to-7-year plan set in place with an expected cost in the region of £15m. They are currently undergoing extensive restoration and refurbishment using a wide variety of highly skilled teams across the board. For the gardens, they have recruited the expertise of a highly accomplished landscape architect and garden designer who has worked on several prestigious projects across the globe. Set within 16 acres, the grounds include 3 ancient woodlands which will be preserved as part of the ongoing woodland management plan. The remaining garden will contain a huge range of elements including realignment of the driveway and creation of an arrival court, reinstated pond with an island teahouse, formal terraces, rose and topiary garden, croquet lawn and tennis court, kitchen and cutting garden with a glasshouse and polytunnels, deep walled beds and much more planned. 

The ideal candidate will have an eye for detail and a strong interest in getting involved in all aspects of the garden working under the guidance of the Head Gardener. Initially, the role will involve the ongoing maintenance of the existing gardens, but as and when the newly planned gardens are constructed and planted, these new areas will be handed over for ongoing maintenance by the resident grounds team. Tasks will include maintaining the lawns, hedge cutting, pruning, transplanting, weeding, etc. 

The successful candidate will hold an academic horticultural qualification and have experience working on a large-scale garden. Excellent plant knowledge, an understanding of health and safety regulations and experience in the use and basic maintenance of hand tools and garden machinery is essential. Chainsaw licence, tractor, PA1 and PA6 and experience with powered tools are preferred but not essential.

Skilled Gardener

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Skilled Gardener to join a beautiful family estate near Alton, Hampshire. This role would suit a gardener with the drive and initiative to maintain a horticulturally diverse garden to a high standard. The position is permanent and for 30 hours per week over 4 days, with Monday and Friday being essential.

The estate consists of 7-acres of garden with beautiful views containing herbaceous borders and formal flower beds, kitchen and cut flower garden, rose garden, all with large-scale planting and foliage interest. The gardens are occasionally open to the public through the NGS and local charities which you will be expected to prepare for and attend.

The Skilled Gardener will be responsible for the overall maintenance and development of the garden whilst working with the full-time gardener and therefore requires someone with excellent plant knowledge. A good understanding of pruning techniques is also important as some of the flower beds have been comprehensively replanted. The Skilled Gardener will be organised, hands on and passionate about horticulture. The lawns and hedges are maintained by the full-time gardener, however, will fall under the remit of the skilled gardener when they are away.

Applicants for this position will ideally hold academic horticultural qualifications and / or experience of gardening on private estates, and good plant/horticultural knowledge in general.  The ability to work to a high degree of detail is essential. The applicant should hold a full UK driving licence. The skilled gardener must be physically fit, friendly and positive in their outlook to maintain the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the estate.

Gardener

An attractive opportunity has arisen for an experienced and trained Gardener to work on a three day a week basis, with additional security and pet responsibilities, near Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire. A three-bedroom house is provided rent free and utility bills covered within the grounds. Candidates will ideally hold an academic horticultural qualification or the relevant experience working on a diverse garden.  

The beautiful Georgian property in the Chilterns is set in four acres of mature garden, with an additional acre of mown paddock. The ground is chalky which has to be borne in mind in the choice and care of the plants and soil. Regular addition of nutrients, mulch and manure is necessary. The gardener will need his skills and plantsman’s knowledge to care for every aspect of the extensive lawn areas, large herbaceous borders, long yew and deciduous hedges, wall-trained roses and fruit trees.

There are some small vegetables and cut flower plots, a large fruit cage, hot and cold greenhouses; the care of all the latter is shared with other garden helpers and the owner. There are areas of rough grass, woodland and mature trees. The client is a keen horticulturist and will be involved in the overall plan of the garden, and interested in your advice and expertise. Ordering supplies and plants and making arrangements for repair and servicing of machinery would be part of your duties.

There are additional duties relating to site security when the client is away overnight or on holiday. It is of paramount importance that these duties are carried out reliably and diligently.

Care of pets: it is important that the new employee is animal friendly. Dog owners are welcome to apply: when the owners are away on holiday they require the new employee to look after their small friendly dog in the provided house, as they would their own pet. When there are cats, to feed them in the owner’s house. There are chickens which need feeding daily and cleaning out once a month. There is some help with the chicken duties. There are a few small domestic tasks that the owners ask for help with.

This position would suit an experienced Gardener looking to settle in a beautiful part of the country with many easily accessible amenities. The village is in the catchment area for the Buckinghamshire schools, and there is a bus to the local primary school.

Applicants should be physically fit, strong and energetic, with good communication skills and an enjoyment of their work and of plants. There are two days for the employee to pursue other work or interests.

A rare opportunity to join our amazing charity has arisen due to retirement.

Our registered charity, now in its 33rd year, offers support and rehabilitation to adults, whose lives are impacted by poor mental health, through the use of therapeutic horticulture.

We rely upon the sale of the plants we propagate to fund the running costs and activities of the charity. We sell to both the public and trade customers and our retail area is open seven days per week most of the year, dropping to five and a half days in the winter months.  As such, the role of Nursery Propagator is an essential part of the process.

Based on 4.5 acres, our site is small with one propagation area which is unheated and manual. We propagate a wide variety of shrubs, perennials, vegetables etc and a broad spectrum of knowledge is required for good propagation in different conditions.

Our service-users and volunteer Friends take part in all aspects of the nursery work and staff lead and direct operations. Patience and some understanding of mental health are essential, we are non-judgemental, inclusive and empowering in our interaction with others.

The role requires physical fitness, adaptability and the willingness to assist other areas of the nursery when needed. The working week is Monday to Friday 8am to 4pm plus attendance at our twice annual Plant Sales, held on Saturdays, for which time in lieu is given.

Horticultural Duties

  • To be responsible for the propagation of in excess of 150,000 plants for sale in our two projects.
  • To liaise closely with the Nursery Supervisors at both projects to develop potential for increased sales and the sustainability of the project.
  • To assist where required in all aspects of the nursery including customer enquiries, stock control, watering, deliveries and general nursery duties as directed by the Nursery Supervisor or Project Manager.
  • To instruct and supervise Volunteers and Friends in the Propagation Unit to help develop their skills and confidence in a workplace.
  • To monitor and report on issues relating to Volunteers’ welfare, progress and support needs.

Other

  • To maintain a safe working environment in compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974.
  • To be responsible for the Nursery in the absence of senior staff.
  • To promote public awareness of the Charity’s work and mental health issues.
  • To attend relevant training in order to update knowledge and acquire new skills required for the role.
