Part Time Skilled Gardener - EC3798
An opportunity has arisen for a skilled and qualified gardener to look after newly constructed gardens to a private house in South Kensington, London, for two full days per week on a self-employed basis.
The beautiful newly constructed gardens (front and rear) have been designed by Ian Kitson and Julie Toll, both of whom will have ongoing involvement in the garden.
Key tasks include lawn care, perennial plant care, specimen shrub planting and shaping, mulching, weeding, training climbers, leaf clearance, paving cleaning and operation of the irrigation system. The client can provide all maintenance machinery and tools on site so as to ensure the successful applicant will not have to transport these on each work day.
Applicants must be experienced and qualified horticulturalists who can confidently manage trees, shrubs, lawns and perennial borders. An academic horticultural qualification and spray certificates would be beneficial, though demonstrable gardening experience is paramount. Candidates with extensive experience of gardening on private estates are encouraged to apply.
Applicants should be physically fit and enthusiastic, with a good eye for detail and an ability to complete your work to a high standard at all times. This position is offered to self-employed gardeners on a permanent basis.

Historic Royal Palaces (HRP) is the independent charity that looks after the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, the Banqueting House, Kensington Palace, Kew Palace and Hillsborough Castle. HRP's cause is to help everyone explore the story of how monarchs and people have shaped society, in some of the greatest palaces ever built.
Our Nursery at Hampton Court Palace covers one acre of glass and it is where we produce a wide range of seasonal bedding plants for our formal Gardens, at both Hampton Court and Kensington Palace. Our unique and fascinating collection of exotic plants, are displayed through the Gardens during the summer, along with three National Collections, which we present on a regular basis. The recently restored Kitchen Garden has been very successful and is now a well-established addition to the historic make up of our character areas within the Gardens.
Plant production, vegetable growing and historic plant collection management is developing fast within our organisation and a greater emphasis is now required for a wider range of species and locations. Your role will be to manage the Nursery and Kitchen Garden teams and all aspects of productive growing, resource management and crop planting production. You will also be responsible for exploring new initiatives to support all Palaces within our group, whilst championing high standards of flower, fruit and vegetable production throughout the palace gardens.
To succeed in this role you will need to demonstrate proven experience in in the management of a glasshouse and plant collection facility as well as decorative horticulture, production of bedding plants, fruit and vegetables gained in a similar environment. You will have sound experience in leading and managing a team. Applicants should be inventive and understand the need to explore commercial opportunities within our sector while at the same time maintain our tradition for growing a range of plants not commonly seen in Gardens.
Ideally educated to degree level or equivalent, as well as RHS level 3 or above. Excellent communication and influencing skills are essential as well as good IT skills. You should also have a good understanding of fire, health and safety and manual handling. A driver’s licence and PA1 –PA6 pesticide applications are both desirable but not essential.
