This position would suit a self-motivated and passionate horticulturalist who is looking for a challenging and rewarding role within a highly professional estate team.

The estate consists of 60 acres of formal gardens, which includes a potager, rose garden, grass tennis courts, outdoor swimming pool, large Victorian glasshouse and cutting garden. In addition, the estate also includes a large woodland, horse paddocks, wildflower meadow and lakes. You will also be responsible for the management of the principal’s townhouse garden in Belgravia, London. 

Working under the direction of the Estate Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing garden maintenance, project management, garden administration and providing clear direction and guidance to a team of 13 gardeners on a day-to-day basis.

The Head Gardener will have full oversight of garden improvements and seasonal maintenance including the research and procurement of plants and materials for all areas of the estate, project planning and implementation in consultation with the Estate Manager, coordination with the household team on internal floral displays and plant maintenance and the development of the annual garden budget in consultation with the estate accounts team. Duties also include oversight of H&S management and best practices coordination with the estate team, staff management – weekly team rotas/meetings, staff training and team supervision and consultation with external partners and specialist consultants. The successful applicant will be responsible for providing client briefings and garden updates.

Applicants will ideally have 7-10 years’ experience within a senior position at a private estate or public garden. Comprehensive plant knowledge and woodland management experience is essential as well as relevant horticultural qualifications and experience. The successful applicant will have operational knowledge, experience of garden machinery and intermediate level IT skills. A full UK Driving Licence is a requirement.

The ideal candidate will have proven staff management experience, comprehensive horticultural knowledge and strong communication skills. The estate has an excellent staff retention record and rewards hardworking and committed individuals.

Duties:

  • Responsible for the day-to-day management and operations of the Retail Sales team and emphasis on the efficiency of the Front Desk Cashiers at the Garden Centre.

  • Supervise the Interior Plant Maintenance department aiding with quotations and contracts for high end corporate clients, plant rentals and purchases for private functions and events.
  • Utilize four hours biweekly for onsite visits for collaboration with corporate clients and monitor the standard of maintenance service being provided.
  • Ensure accurate record keeping, monthly sales reports and corporate Plantcare Maintenance client files are current for accurate billing.
  • Create and upload weekly posts providing information for marketing of current trends, new products, seasonal plant availability using Social Media platforms. Communicate with online client queries. Weekly radio show to promote all things related to the Centre.
  • Liaise with Department heads and Somerset Plant Production Nursery to coordinate timely shipments of plant material to the Garden Centre to ensure product availability for retail sale and confirm correct pricing.
  • Liaise with departmental managers and supervisors to ensure the success of the business. Reports directly to the General Manager
  • Assist in any other area as required to benefit the successes and efficiency of the company.

Applicant should have at least 3 years’ experience in a similar role. The applicant must display exemplary customer service skills with the ability to problem solve and meet critical deadlines.

Must also possess a valid driver’s license.

Weekend work and some Public Holidays are essential.

Head Gardener

An experienced, enthusiastic and responsible Head Gardener is required to work in a private garden near Andover.  It is an extremely exciting opportunity to be involved in a site that is both an existing landscape as well as a new project.

The garden requires work to bring selected elements back into shape. They will have the chance to have an input into the setting up of some of the supporting garden infrastructure (e.g. contribute to the internal layout of the Machine Store). Some parts of the garden are also currently under construction, so they will be joining the project during the on-going implementation phase. The candidate should have strong horticultural knowledge, as well as extensive experience in both administrative and practical management of gardens and landscapes throughout the year and proven supervisory experience. 

The position is fulltime, and they will be required to work with and manage other garden staff and coordinate with external contractors, as required, for specialist horticultural projects. They will be expected to manage, programme and oversee any external maintenance and service contractors for items such as the irrigation, cascades, water features, lighting, energy systems etc. It will also be necessary for them to gain a working understanding of the relevant equipment for day-to-day management. They will be expected to keep up-to-date records and daily diaries accordingly. 

The site incorporates existing woodland, which has been enhanced with recent planting, mature specimen trees, veteran trees, and arboretum, mixed shrub and herbaceous borders, formal and informal planting, formal lawns, hedges, cascades, formal water features and a working walled garden planted for both produce and cut flowers with a mixed zone greenhouse, including one for houseplants and display plants. There will be a working compost area and they should be comfortable around animals, including horses.   

The successful candidate will be expected to maintain the grounds to the highest horticultural standards throughout the seasons and have a sound understanding of general garden machinery, their uses and maintenance.  They should be willing to undertake training as required and have qualifications in spraying (PA1 and PA6). Hedge-cutting and chainsaw use would be an advantage. They should be good at budget planning and have a comprehensive understanding of the relevant Health and Safety Regulations, environmental management, manual handling and risk assessment. 

Candidates must have excellent interpersonal skills, be self-motivated, capable of working as part of a team and have a valid driving license.

Our client seeks an experienced gardener to help maintain the gardens on a year-round basis following the annual calendar. Applicants will possess an academic horticultural qualification, such as a Kew Diploma, RHS level 2 or equivalent, combined with extensive experience working in a similar role. As such, excellent plant knowledge and technical skills are essential for this position with experience in compost management, propagation, spraying, weeding and rejuvenating beds. A self-motivated, organised individual with a self-start attitude and proven track record of managing both a mature English country garden as well as a small team. A strong work ethic, ability to work to their own initiative and willingness to work to consistently high standards are qualities which are essential for this role. Candidates will be flexible and willing to extend their duties where needed. As such, this is a physically demanding position which requires a fit and strong individual who is comfortable working in all weathers.

General maintenance duties will include but are not limited to pruning, propagating, weeding, edging and compost management. Experience in managing a small team as well as contractors will be advantageous for prospective candidates. Experience in the use and maintenance of a wide range of gardening machinery as well as PA1 and PA6 spraying certificates, and a chainsaw certification are desirable for this position. The house is equipped with machinery, which the gardener should be capable of maintaining between services.

  • CSCS Card is ideal but not essential.
  • Previous general landscaping experience ideally with porcelain, paving and bricklaying.
  • To oversee the successful implementation and completion of landscaping projects.
  • Delivering projects to timescale and to budget
  • Organising and motivating the team, providing clear instructions and direction for their daily tasks.
  • Always Adhering to health and safety on site.
  • Minimum of 1 years Team Leader experience
