A fantastic position of Sole Gardener / Housekeeper has become available to assist with the management of a beautiful 4-acre garden at the heart of a 600 acre estate for a 17th C Grade II* property. Successful candidates will be provided with a 2-bedroom cottage on site.

The garden itself is 4 acres with varying features which include lawns, herbaceous and shrub borders, vegetable garden with fruit and cut flower beds, rose beds, and clipped Yew, Box and Beech hedges. There is also a working greenhouse which is used to propagate and grow on plants for the garden and vegetable beds / cut flower garden. The garden is currently being maintained to a good standard and is tidy and well looked after.

The role would suit someone hands on and physically fit who is able to work alone and have the experience to maintain the garden to an exceptional standard alongside excellent plant knowledge. Ideally candidates will have RHS level 2 qualifications or equivalent and proven practical experience managing the routine maintenance and development of a formal garden. The ability to operate and maintain a wide range of garden machinery is essential and the ideal candidate would hold spraying, strimming, chainsaw and tractor-driving certification and experience. The new gardener should be willing and confident to assist with general estate duties, particularly in the winter months to include interior and exterior maintenance, pet sitting, site security when the owners are away, log-splitting and stocking firewood. A full driving licence is required.

The owner is looking for a friendly part time Housekeeper (15-20 hours/week). A good all-rounder who takes pride in their work, they will be required to ensure the house is kept clean and tidy to a good standard. Generally, the position will involve cleaning the house and cottage, tending to laundry, ironing, and changing beds. Ideally both candidates will be good with animals as the owners have 2 dogs and from time to time the successful candidates will be requested to look after the dogs when the owners are away.

Accommodation is provided on site, and this comprises of a 2-bedroom cottage suitable for the successful couple but unfortunately is unsuitable for children. Council tax is paid for by the homeowner and all utilities are included. The property has a woodburning stove, and firewood is readily available on site to heat the property in the colder months.

Gardener/Caretaker

Based in a beautiful rural setting in Normandy, France, a hands-on Gardener/Caretaker is sought. The 1000-hectare estate offers pastures, woodlands, informal gardens, arboretum, a small lake and an orchard. The main house is a 300-year old chateau and there are a number of outbuildings, including a workshop, guest cottage, and a separate 3 bed, 2 reception room house that comes with the position.  Roughly 9 hectares are maintained formally, with the rest comprising woodlands and pastures, some of which are let out.  It is certified as an organic farm and there is a small flock of sheep, some chickens, and a vegetable garden.  Although the property is rural, there is a town of 25,000 population 10 km away, and the coastal beaches are a short 30 min drive away.  This is a secondary family residence for our London-based client, who travel regularly to the property for school holidays and longer periods over the summer. 

Our client is seeking a live-in Gardener / Caretaker for a full time, permanent position.  The family is actively involved with the management of the property and is in direct communication at least weekly to discuss ongoing activity at the property.  They are a relaxed and understated family, with three school-aged children.

The position is the only employed member of staff on the property, although there are regular tradespeople to the property, including regular cleaning and upkeep of the interior of the chateau which is contracted out.  The role is ideal for someone who is hands on, multi-skilled from gardening to equipment maintenance to working with animals and is self-motivated.  It offers the scope to create and execute new projects, and the owners are very open to taking the property in a direction that aligns with the skills and interests of the caretaker.

The position is open to an individual or ideally, a couple.  Work should be locally part or full time for the non-employed partner, or of course this would be perfect for someone who’s partner works remotely or who stays at home with young children.

The main responsibilities of the Gardener /Caretaker role but not limited to, is to carry out garden maintenance duties, to include mowing, pruning, cutting, strimming, weeding, hoeing, raking, etc. as well as weekly, strimming and clearing of approx. 9 hectare park. Maintain and prune hedges. Planting out the summer and winter flower beds and planters Care as well as the maintenance of extensive rose garden. Clean and maintain koi pond. Tend to fruit trees in the orchard and plan, plant, and maintain organic vegetable garden, the propagation of seedlings and plants. Maintenance of woodlands including selected clearing of fallen trees and re-plantings.

The caretaker responsibilities are to keep the owners apprised of any minor or major damage and wear and tear to buildings and property, and either carry out or arrange and supervise repairs. Carry out repairs to fences and gates, keeping outside areas clean and tidy, including outbuilding. Weeding of pathways, replacement of light bulbs in internal and external lamps and supplying the main house with firewood. There will be occasional painting and basic carpentry, plumbing, and electrictics works required. Previous experience of maintaining the upkeep of tractor, chainsaws, strimmer, and other garden machinery and equipment is desirable. As there is livestock on the estate there will be the requirement to feed the animals (currently sheep, chickens, but may consider a few cows). Ensuring the security and the occasional errands into nearby village for supplies and picking up of guests will also be required.

Management of external contractors will be an additional feature of this position and therefore previous experience in doing so will be advantageous for prospective candidates. Applicants should be physically fit and with a ‘can do’ attitude. A self-motivated individual/s with a strong work ethic, ability to work to their own initiative and willingness to work to consistently high standards are qualities which are essential for this role.

The successful candidate will possess the following skills:

Will have experience in a similar position a good knowledge of horticulture, gardening and landscaping; horticultural qualifications a plus a basic knowledge of farming and agriculture, with organics a plus. Excellent attention to detail and take pride in their work. Additionally speak fluent English; some spoken French is required, to at least a basic conversational level and have a European passport or residency.

Terms of Employment:

  • Hours: 39 per week  
  • Occasional overtime when required (with sufficient notice)
  • Guaranteed days off:   Generally approx. 30 min of animal care on weekends / day, otherwise free

Gardening Couple

An exciting opportunity for a Senior Gardener or Gardening Couple has arisen to work within a stunning private estate, near Chalfont St Giles, Buckinghamshire. The current Gardener has been with the owners for a wonderful 18 years and due to their upcoming retirement, the client is now looking for enthusiastic and passionate horticulturalists to join the estate.

In its entirety the estate covers 250-acres, with 6-acres of both relaxed and formal gardens surrounding the property. These comprise of expansive lawns, an orchard, a walled garden which contains shrubs, herbaceous borders, espalier fruit trees, fruit and vegetables and a cutting garden. Other elements include a Victorian greenhouse, a variety of climbers and a Victorian lido which has recently been converted into a pond. The owners are extremely fond of their garden and have some upcoming projects planned, this includes the development of an area within the walled garden, as well as potentially creating another large pond. Therefore, this role would suit candidates who can offer their creative input and help deliver the new projects to the highest standards.  

Applicants should ideally hold a horticultural qualification combined with excellent plant knowledge and previous experience working on private estates. Experience in planting, pruning, lawn care and propagation is necessary for the role, as is competence in the use of a wide range of machinery and good craft skills. A full UK driving licence is essential. The successful candidate(s) will be passionate about their work and have a positive attitude and will have the ability to work with little supervision and maintain a high level of performance, be dynamic and have the ability to problem solve with autonomy.

The owner is looking for a full time Senior Gardener with a working week of 40-hours per week, Monday to Friday with occasional weekend work for watering purposes, depending on the season. For the second Gardener, the client is looking for someone to assist the Senior Gardener on a part time basis, 3 days per week.

About the role:

Job Description

The Head of Production will oversee the entire production team and provide strategic input on the day-to-day and long-term running of the company. The ideal candidate will be highly experienced in the horticultural sector or have experience of a similar role within a fresh produce or FMCG business.

The Head of Production is an integral role within our client’s business, predominantly overseeing end to end company-wide operations including the production, growth and dispatch of the product. In reporting to the Board of Directors, the successful candidate will be responsible for the direct line management of the Transport Manager, four Site Managers and Growing Team. A key focus for the Head of Production will be to develop and implement operating methods and procedures including company-wide space planning method, designed to reduce or eliminate operating problems and improve product cost, quality, delivery, performance, and customer satisfaction. In line with the company’s Core Values, they will be required to create an environment of employee engagement, training and succession to create a high performance, motivated work culture and continuous improvement environment.

Key Accountabilities
  • Responsible for managing all elements of plant production (including planning, potting, moving plants, minimising waste and managing budgets) to achieve customer specifications and sales windows.
  • Active member of the Leadership Team contributing to the running of the Company and shaping overall business strategy.
  • Chair regular production meetings to review, evaluate and improve the performance of the production team.
  • Build strong internal working relationships with Purchasing, Production, Operations and QA teams to ensure that purchasing timelines are met; procedures are followed; customer specifications are achieved and goods are dispatched in a timely manner.

  • Work closely with the Quality and Compliance Manager to ensure all operations on site are in accordance with the HSE expectations.

The property is at the end of the first stage of being redeveloped and the owners are looking for a gardener to continue to drive the garden forward and enhance to add a modern touch whilst retaining the history of the garden. The gardener will be part of a wider estate team but will be solely responsible for the maintenance and management of the formal gardens to ensure efficiency and maintain to a high horticultural standard and presentation.  Applicants should be equally driven, energetic and experienced hands-on professionals with excellent attention to detail and a flexible approach to occasional assist on the wider estate.

The family enjoy cooking and a healthy lifestyle and are looking for a Chef with a passion for food and an appetite to create delicious and interesting meals. The successful candidate will work closely with the gardener who will provide fresh seasonal fruit, vegetables and herbs from the kitchen garden to allow the chef to prepare delicious meals from scratch. The estate also has their own cows, sheep and pigs. The chef will be expected to work most weekends with two days off in the week and prepare food for the occasional dinner party.

This new opportunity would suit a horticulturist and a chef as a couple or an individual with experience in cooking and a keen interest in kitchen gardening.

Accommodation is provided rent free for the successful couple with council tax and utilities paid by the employer. The accommodation would be a large one-bedroom flat in the main house and therefore unfortunately not suitable for pets or children. There are cottages available on the estate that are currently under renovation and can be available for the Gardener / Chef to move into once ready.

Head Gardener

A rare and fantastic opportunity has arisen for an excellent plants person to take ownership of a stunning private garden near Geneva, Switzerland.  This exceptional position would suit a creative and knowledgeable horticulturalist, someone who takes pride in their work and will enjoy working in a beautiful location with a lot of diversity near an international hub. Due to work permit restrictions, we can only accept applicants who hold an EU passport.

The beautiful Swiss property is surrounded by 12000 m2 (about 3 acres) of tiered garden and meadows. After extensive renovation and garden groundwork, the owners are looking for a gardener to implement a working kitchen garden and develop the garden as a whole. The style of the garden is naturalist and other areas consist of lawns, raised beds, borders, young and mature trees, a rose garden, glasshouse, tennis court and swimming pool.

There is room for improvement in the garden, so the successful applicant will have a chance to demonstrate their talent by way of subtle and bold new ideas. The Head Gardener will be responsible for one full time gardener, one part time gardener and contractors therefore effective communication is important. Additional tasks include looking after the pets and livestock.

Applicants must have previous Head Gardener experience, extensive plant knowledge, excellent time management skills as well as a genuine hunger and excitement for the possibilities associated with creating a stunning garden. Applicants must have clear and demonstrable experience of Head/Senior Gardening, excellent attention to detail and a positive, enthusiastic attitude towards their work and colleagues.  Academic horticultural qualifications are essential at degree level or higher education, as is at least five years’ experience of private estate garden management and demonstrate good hands-on gardening skills.

This is a rare vacancy, and a generous salary is offered for what will be an exciting and very rewarding position.  A new cottage onsite is available for the successful candidate (single occupancy), independent from the main house with rent and utility bills covered by the employer. Although the owners of the property speak English, being in the French part of Switzerland, knowledge of French is preferred. Or at least basic French and French classes can be arranged to further develop language skills.
