An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced and dedicated Head Gardener at an historic 300-acre private estate in Ascot, Berkshire. This position would suit a self-motivated and passionate horticulturalist who is looking for a challenging and rewarding role within a highly professional estate team.
The estate consists of 60 acres of formal gardens, which includes a potager, rose garden, grass tennis courts, outdoor swimming pool, large Victorian glasshouse and cutting garden. In addition, the estate also includes a large woodland, horse paddocks, wildflower meadow and lakes. You will also be responsible for the management of the principal’s townhouse garden in Belgravia, London.
Working under the direction of the Estate Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing garden maintenance, project management, garden administration and providing clear direction and guidance to a team of 13 gardeners on a day-to-day basis.
The Head Gardener will have full oversight of garden improvements and seasonal maintenance including the research and procurement of plants and materials for all areas of the estate, project planning and implementation in consultation with the Estate Manager, coordination with the household team on internal floral displays and plant maintenance and the development of the annual garden budget in consultation with the estate accounts team. Duties also include oversight of H&S management and best practices coordination with the estate team, staff management – weekly team rotas/meetings, staff training and team supervision and consultation with external partners and specialist consultants. The successful applicant will be responsible for providing client briefings and garden updates.
Applicants will ideally have 7-10 years’ experience within a senior position at a private estate or public garden. Comprehensive plant knowledge and woodland management experience is essential as well as relevant horticultural qualifications and experience. The successful applicant will have operational knowledge, experience of garden machinery and intermediate level IT skills. A full UK Driving Licence is a requirement.
The ideal candidate will have proven staff management experience, comprehensive horticultural knowledge and strong communication skills. The estate has an excellent staff retention record and rewards hardworking and committed individuals.

What you will be doing?

What we are looking for?
We are looking for an experienced General Manager within the Grounds Maintenance Industry. This post is 37 hours per week and involves the full time management of the Enterprise and its day to day operations.

An attractive opportunity has arisen for a Deputy Head Gardener to join the existing team on a stunning private estate in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. The position would suit a pro-active hardworking, hands-on individual with experience on private estates and the ambition to continue to build on their existing skills and knowledge on a daily basis.
The incredible Grade II listed property is surrounded by 750 acres with stunning expansive views over the valley, river and lake and has one of the finest gardens in the Cotswolds. The 22-acre garden is made up of different areas which include elegant formal gardens with fine herbaceous planting, terraced lawns, lily ponds, landscaped hillside stream gardens and massed plantings of spring bulbs, heathers, flowering shrubs and rhododendrons. This is an exciting time to join the gardens team as they are about to start on a program of improvements. They have just restored the walled kitchen garden back to a productive garden and have plans to improve other parts of the garden over the next couple of years. All of the gardens are interspersed by the finest mature specimen trees and water features.
The successful applicant will assist to manage the existing team in the upkeep and maintenance of the gardens to a high horticultural standard, assisting the Head Gardener and deputising in their absence. Candidates will ideally have experience in the above areas of horticulture and be dedicated gardeners with the willingness to undertake additional garden estate duties if required. He / She will ideally have the confidence in pruning methods, i.e. of wisteria and roses, and have good horticultural knowledge and plant identification skills overall. Applicants must be physically fit, be confident in the operation of a range of garden machinery and happy to work in all weathers.
An academic horticultural qualification would be advantageous and well-rounded experience in a similar hands-on role. Candidates should hold a full driving licence, your own transport for commuting to and from site and ideally, spray tickets (PA1/PA6). A chainsaw licence would be beneficial.
The position would suit an experienced and knowledgeable gardener with a real passion for horticulture and has good attention to detail. They will be hands-on, physically fit, work in all weathers and have the willingness to continue to grow as a horticulturalist with a team building mentality with good leadership skills.
Accommodation is available if required in the form of a two-bedroom cottage on the estate. Children and Pets are welcome. Bills such as water and electricity will be the tenant’s responsibility.

Your role will be to create and maintain a positive and pleasant work environment, ensuring high levels of organisational effectiveness, communication, and safety. The person appointed will be responsible for supervising a small team of landscapers working on individual projects. Your duties will include:
- Assisting the Project Manager in the planning and organisation of projects
- Ordering of materials and equipment.
- Setting out the works from design drawings.
- Delegating duties within the team.
- Ensuring work is completed on time, and to a high standard of finish.
- Liaising with the client and design team to resolve any problems.
- Ensure that site operations are carried out in accordance with the company’s health and safety policy.
- Maintain site records.
Key Skills:
Candidates must have excellent practical skills in all areas of hard landscaping, with a good eye for detail and strong leadership skills, able to demonstrate a successful track record of delivering high quality workmanship which is completed on time and within agreed budgets. It is also important that you have good communication skills, combined with a pro-active and flexible approach to your duties.
A full clean drivers licence is essential for this role

An exciting opportunity is available for a Garden & Grounds Manager to provide professional support to a historical estate spanning 400/500 acres of parkland and formal gardens. This multifaceted role encompasses health and safety, training, project management, planned and reactive maintenance, and legal compliance related to all buildings, landscapes, and trees. The primary aim of this position is to enhance the conservation, environmental, and public access value of the estate, ensuring it remains a treasured sanctuary for wildlife and a delightful experience for visitors.
The estate, renowned for its rich biodiversity, features a variety of formal and woodland gardens, farmland, and estate woodlands. As the Garden and Grounds Manager, you will collaborate closely with the Wildlife Manager to enhance habitats for wildlife, while integrating public access, educational opportunities, and volunteer initiatives into proposals. The estate is open to the public and is a popular venue for large events throughout the year, which requires maintaining the highest standards of garden development and presentation. Key responsibilities include managing presentation standards, controlling labour and material costs, and adhering to budget constraints. Furthermore, you will lead and engage with numerous volunteers working on the grounds and gardens, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose. A significant aspect of this role involves the development of a new kitchen garden. This project will require close collaboration with the Programmes Manager to plan and deliver a garden that maximizes public benefit, encourages volunteer participation, and supports community outreach.
The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic and reliable individual with extensive experience in maintaining gardens to the highest standards, preferably in a heritage setting. Essential skills include managing significant gardens, planning and executing new garden projects, budget management, operational setup, and implementing cost-effective operations. The candidate should also have experience working with volunteer and community groups, propagating plants, growing fruit and vegetables, and managing woodland and parkland. Also being commitment to providing excellent visitor experiences in the outdoor spaces is crucial.
In addition to technical skills, the role requires strong leadership qualities to inspire and manage a diverse team. The successful candidate will demonstrate a passion for horticulture and a deep understanding of the principles of sustainability and conservation. Job Brief
Our client is seeking an experienced Garden Maintenance Supervisor to join their busy and innovative team full time, responsible for ensuring the highest standards of care and customer satisfaction with domestic and commercial projects across London. You will be managing the maintenance department alongside the head of maintenance, to ensure the department is running smoothly and seamlessly.
This role requires a combination of horticultural knowledge and leadership skills. The ideal candidate will be responsible for managing a team of gardeners, assisting with scheduling and coordinating maintenance activities, and liaising with clients to ensure their gardens are maintained to the highest standard
Key Responsibilities:
- Team Management, communication and reporting: Lead, motivate and manage a team of garden maintenance staff.
- Scheduling and team coordination: Assist our client’s operations team in scheduling maintenance activities to ensure timely completion of jobs and consistency within team members and dates/times of regular maintenance jobs.
- Client Relations and client satisfaction: Act as primary point of contact for clients. Conduct site visits, and engage with clients to understand their needs, providing accurate estimates and delivering exceptional customer service. Provide maintenance recommendations and address any concerns or feedback promptly.
- Horticulture Care: Oversee all garden maintenance tasks throughout the year, including planting, pruning, weeding, fertilizing, pest control and irrigation management. Ensure all work is carried out to the highest horticultural standards. Issuing monthly maintenance tasks for the teams and checking in on the teams to ensure the correct horticultural care is being carried out.
- Quality Control: Regularly inspect gardens/sites to ensure maintenance standards are met. Implement improvements as necessary to enhance garden aesthetics and health. Careful monitoring of irrigation systems, including planning and overseeing the dormant season shutdown and spring start up programmers.
- Health & Safety compliance: Ensure all teams comply with health and safety regulations. Provide training and enforce safety protocols among the teams.
- Equipment Management: Oversee the maintenance of gardening tools and equipment. Ensure all equipment is in good working order with regular maintenance service checks. Work with the Team Leaders to ensure all operatives are fully equipped each day with the necessary tools, equipment, and materials to complete required tasks. Ensure vehicles assigned to the Maintenance Teams are kept in good working order every week.
You will need:
- Excellent horticultural knowledge with at least 5 + years’ experience in garden maintenance, with at least 2 years' supervisory or managerial role.
- Ability to produce accurate quotes.
- Highly organised and able to multitask effectively.
- A desire and passion to continually learn and develop.
- A drive to deliver, create and nurture high standard gardens.
- Excellent leadership and team management skills.
- Remaining calm and composed and able to deliver instructions clearly to the teams and during meetings.
- A right to live and work in the UK
- Full clean drivers licence.
- Recognised horticultural qualification, or a high level of horticultural knowledge/experience.
