A rare and fantastic opportunity has arisen for an excellent plants person to take ownership of a stunning private garden near Geneva, Switzerland.  This exceptional position would suit a creative and knowledgeable horticulturalist, someone who takes pride in their work and will enjoy working in a beautiful location with a lot of diversity near an international hub.

The beautiful Swiss property is surrounded by 12000 m2 (about 3 acres) of tiered garden and meadows. After extensive renovation and garden groundwork, the owners are looking for a gardener to implement a working kitchen garden and develop the garden as a whole. The style of the garden is naturalist and other areas consist of lawns, raised beds, borders, young and mature trees, a rose garden, glasshouse, tennis court and swimming pool.

There is room for improvement in the garden, so the successful applicant will have a chance to demonstrate their talent by way of subtle and bold new ideas. The Head Gardener will be responsible for one full time gardener, one part time gardener and contractors therefore effective communication is important. Additional task is the looking after the pets and livestock.

Applicants must have previous Head Gardener experience, extensive plant knowledge, excellent time management skills as well as a genuine hunger and excitement for the possibilities associated with creating a stunning garden. Applicants must have clear and demonstrable experience of Head/Senior Gardening, excellent attention to detail and a positive, enthusiastic attitude towards their work and colleagues.  Academic horticultural qualifications are essential at degree level or higher education, as is at least five years’ experience of private estate garden management and demonstrate good hands-on gardening skills.

This is a rare vacancy, and a generous salary is offered for what will be an exciting and very rewarding position.  A new cottage onsite is available for the successful candidate (single occupancy), independent from the main house with rent and utility bills covered by the employer. A work permit will be arranged by the employer in accordance with Swiss policies for the successful applicant. Although the owners of the property speak English, being in the French part of Switzerland, knowledge of French is preferred. Or at least basic French and French classes can be arranged to further develop language skills.

Experienced Gardener

An excellent full time and permanent opportunity has arisen for an Experienced Gardener with a passion for lawn care and garden maintenance to work within the beautiful gardens of a private estate in Hertfordshire.

The private estate encompasses 3 acres of land surrounding the main property, which include a 2-acre 9-hole golf course. The gardens are mature and well laid out containing formal lawns with a Dahlia Garden, fishpond and water wall, a mixture of apple and cherry trees, coniferous and broadleaf trees, a mixture of topiary from potted to planted spiralling Buxus. The garden also contains extensive hedging made up of a variety of species.

The successful candidate will be fully responsible for the estate’s lawn care and grounds maintenance. Separated into more formal lawned and garden areas and a golf course, the estate boasts a 2 acre expanse of land housing the course’s fairways, greens and roughs. Currently the estate is maintained through contractors however, the client wishes to appoint an experienced gardener to take over with the aim to then assign them with an assistant should the suitable candidate require it. To assist them in ensuring the lawns and gardens are kept to the highest standards throughout the seasons, aligning with the estate owner’s requirements.

It will be the responsibility of the Experienced Gardener to ensure all turf is maintained and well kept, including mowing lawns, treating, feeding and fertilising when necessary. Duties will vary naturally throughout the seasons and will include leaf collection and clearing snow, replanting areas of the garden from summer to winter. Other responsibilities may include pruning / cutting back, watering, transplanting, controlling diseases, insects, and weeds.

The ideal candidate will have good plant knowledge as well as experience in all aspects of lawncare; that could be from or working within a greenkeeping environment or grounds related role; with a keen eye for detail, thorough in maintaining high standards, taking pride in their work, reliable and able to work form their own initiative.

This is a full time and permanent position with the working hours being Monday – Friday 08.00 to 17.00 changing to 08.00 to 16.30 throughout the winter period.

Sole Gardener

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Sole Gardener to join the garden and grounds of a beautiful residential property located near Flitwick in Bedfordshire. The owner requires a skilled gardener to manage the ongoing maintenance of the gardens and grounds.

The estate is a total of 72 acres, which is a mixture of farmland, pastures, parkland and formal garden. The gardens surround the principal dwelling, with a lawned area to the front elevation, either side of the driveway and to the rear, leading out to an area of parkland of about 37 acres. To the side of the house is a further lawn with a water feature with paved walkway and herbaceous borders together with a sunken pond with landscaped banks and mature trees. The Sole Gardener will be responsible for the parkland and about a 5-acre formal garden which includes lawns, formal bed planting, water features including two large ponds, extensive hedging, planted pots and containers. The formal gardens are enclosed predominantly by parkland fencing.

The Sole Gardener will be responsible for maintaining the gardens on a year-round basis. Applicants will ideally possess an academic horticultural qualification, such as an RHS level 2 or equivalent, combined with several years’ experience working in a similar role. Excellent plant knowledge and technical skills are essential for this position. General maintenance duties will include but are not limited to pruning, planting, weeding, mowing, strimming, and edging.

Our client is looking for someone with a proactive approach, who can offer suggestions for the management and improvement of the gardens and parklands and who can work independently to bring these improvements to fruition. As such, this is a physically demanding position which requires a fit and strong individual who is comfortable working in all weathers.

Applicants should have a ‘can do’ attitude. A self-motivated individual with a strong work ethic, ability to work to their own initiative and willingness to work to consistently high standards are qualities which are essential for this role.

The house is equipped with machinery, which the gardener should be capable of maintaining between services. Experience in the use and maintenance of a wide range of gardening machinery is required as well as a full driving licence to the rural location of the property. PA1 and PA6 spraying, and chainsaw certification are a requirement for this position or the willingness to acquire the tickets for the role.

The hours of work for this position are 8:00am-4.30pm, Monday-Friday with a coffee break 10:00-10:30am, and lunch break 1pm-1:30pm. Please note, the successful candidate will be subject to a DBS check.

An exciting opportunity has become available for a Gardener / Housekeeper couple on a full time and permanent basis for a beautiful grade II* listed private estate on the Essex / Suffolk Border. The roles would suit a passionate and driven all rounded couple in their respective industries.

The garden was designed 25 years ago by the garden designer George Carter and has been developed into a stunning vista garden with incredible landscape views and expansive lawns. The estate covers about 50 acres including woodland, meadows and a 3-acre formal garden consisting of a rose garden, topiary, yew hedging a walled garden (cutting borders, raised beds, espalier fruit trees lining the walls of the garden, orangery) and a large, heated glasshouse housing tropical plants. There is also a croquet lawn and swimming pool area. The majority of the garden is kept organic, and the owners are looking to continue to promote organic practices and methods. The garden has occasionally been open to the public in the past to help raise money for charities.

The owners are friendly and have a positive working environment at the estate. There is a small team on the estate that work closely together. The Lady of the house has a keen interest in the garden and is passionate about plants. She used to be hands-on in the garden but has taken a step back and works closely with the gardeners. They are looking for an enthusiastic gardener to join a small team on a long-term basis to manage and maintain the gardens. The successful candidate must be a team player, hardworking, able to operate machinery, along with plant knowledge and a friendly manner with a flexible approach to their work.

Duties under the responsibility of the Housekeeper will consist of the upkeep of the main house by way of cleaning, tending to laundry, ironing, changing beds, taking deliveries, and shopping.

A 4-bedroom cottage is provided with rent, council tax, water and super-fast Wi-fi paid by the employer. Family and pets may be accommodated, subject to approval.  A very friendly informal environment, but with high standards.

Our client is an established landscape company which has gained a high reputation for the quality of their work. They carry out a broad range of services which include design, construction, and grounds maintenance. They work for a variety of commercial and residential clients with projects located in and around London, mainly north of the river. Due to an ever-increasing work load they are currently seeking a Hard Landscaper to join the team. The client is open to discussions with newly qualified candidates as well as those who are more experienced.

Job Description:

The person appointed will be responsible for a variety of hard landscaping tasks where a high standard is essential. Tasks will include:

  • Setting out the works from design drawings and plans.
  • Site preparation including groundworks
  • Brickwork
  • Blockwork
  • Paving
  • Fencing
  • Ensuring work is completed on time, and to a high standard of finish.
Key Skills:

Candidates must have excellent practical skills and experience in all areas of hard landscaping, with a good eye for detail and strong work ethic, able to demonstrate a successful track record of delivering high quality workmanship which is completed on time and within agreed budgets. It is also important that you have good communication skills, combined with a pro-active and flexible approach to your duties.

A driving licence is essential for this role.
