Key Responsibilities:

  • Client Relations and client satisfaction: Act as primary point of contact for clients. Provide maintenance recommendations and address any concerns or feedback promptly.
  • Horticulture Care: Oversee all garden maintenance tasks throughout the year, including planting, pruning, weeding, fertilizing, pest control and irrigation management. Ensure all work is carried out to the highest horticultural standards. Issuing monthly maintenance tasks for the teams and checking in on the teams to ensure the correct horticultural care is being carried out.
  • Quality Control: Regularly inspect gardens/sites to ensure maintenance standards are met. Implement improvements as necessary to enhance garden aesthetics and health. Careful monitoring of irrigation systems, including planning and overseeing the dormant season shutdown and spring start up programmers.
  • Health & Safety compliance: Ensure all teams comply with health and safety regulations. Provide training and enforce safety protocols among the teams.
  • Equipment Management: Oversee the maintenance of gardening tools and equipment. Ensure all equipment is in good working order with regular maintenance service checks. Work with the Team Leaders to ensure all operatives are fully equipped each day with the necessary tools, equipment, and materials to complete required tasks. Ensure vehicles assigned to the Maintenance Teams are kept in good working order every week.
You will need:
  • Excellent horticultural knowledge with at least 5 + years’ experience in garden maintenance, with at least 2 years' supervisory or managerial role.

Longevity and a realistic maintenance programme being key factors. The gardens are open to the public occasionally and kept to a high horticultural standard.

The Head gardener will lead a friendly team of 3 gardeners (full and part time) who have built strong working relationships and create a positive atmosphere. The employers have a keen interest in their garden and are looking for a Head Gardener who will collaborate with them, take their garden and make it his/her passion to develop it.

The successful applicant will be hands on in all aspects of gardening on the property. Duties
  • Ensuring communications are maintained between yourself and the rest of the Production Team to discuss and prioritise work.
  • Manage the production team to lead their workload, preparing worksheets for stock control and production teams and keeping the work board updated,
  • Producing weekly potting plans and monitoring the quality and timeliness of completion.
  • Preparing an annual Production plan and liaising with suppliers and the propagator to ensure that all young plant material is available on a timely basis.
  • Monitoring crops ensuring P&D issues are identified and crops are moved to a saleable state on a timely basis.
  • Manage rotation of stock and space to facilitate efficiency of potting tasks.
  • Routinely assessing effectiveness of the irrigation systems.
  • Using Growmaster software to inform the production schedules, raise purchase orders and manage stock numbers and locations.
  • Working with the MD and the senior managers to develop the Company’s systems for the purpose of improving efficiency and accuracy of the relevant processes.
  • Assist in researching and developing responses to regulatory change.
