This position will suit an experienced and knowledgeable gardener with a desire to take on the maintenance and future development of a horticulturally diverse, typical English Country style garden in order to utilise their full horticultural skill set.

The historic Grade II* listed property is surrounded by 5-acres of new and established gardens. The gardens are currently being renovated by the very talented designer Miranda Brooks, the successful candidate will be working closely with the designer to see the devilment of the garden come to life.

The gardens boast impressive herbaceous borders, bursting with colour and texture throughout the seasons as well as formal lawns, orchard, carp pond and charming topiary sculptures and a new kitchen garden with a wonderful new greenhouse that is yet to be planted and developed.

The grounds are also host to a newly renovated lake with an Oak jetty and decking seating platform along with picnic areas, there is also an additional lake which is yet to be renovated along with streams running through the garden.

Suitable applicants will possess a recognised horticultural qualification as well as extensive experience in horticulturally diverse gardens in a private estate setting. Competence in all horticultural techniques is essential, as is a good understanding of vegetable gardening, plus a passion for developing gardens to reach their full potential.

Candidates will be expected to manage all aspects of grounds maintenance, including lawns, hedge cutting and topiary trimming, pathways and irrigation systems. This is a hands-on role so good physical fitness and a willingness to work outdoors in all weathers is essential.

Practical experience with the use and care of a full range of garden machinery is desired, with a chainsaw certification being advantageous. The landscaping team, of around 10 members, covers all aspects of domestic and commercial landscaping within North Devon and the surrounding areas. Their reputation is everything, holding BALI membership for a considerable time, they pride themselves on being the go-to landscaping company in the area. Now an exciting opportunity for an experienced, hard working and enthusiastic person who has strong knowledge of the industry, both hard and soft, to join the team and take on many of the tasks currently undertaken by one of the company directors who is looking to take a step back.

Key responsibilities:

Candidates will be working on exciting projects, ranging up to £150,000 in value with multiple projects running at any one time. Main tasks will include but are not limited to:

  • Undertake site visits, surveys and meetings with clients as required to discuss projects.
  • Basic site surveys, review of drawings and any bills or quantities, then preparation of appropriate quotations.
  • Assessing risk and maintaining a safe working environment with regular toolbox talks and record keeping.
  • Purchasing and stock control
  • Create handover packs and carry out ongoing monitoring of the installation teams during projects.
  • Daily processing of worksheets to allow close monitoring of labour and material costs on each project, plus identification of any extras.
  • Identify any training needs within the team.
  • Invoicing of completed work.
  • Active involvement in recruitment of employees.
  • Attend regular production meetings with the Directors.
Candidate Experience/Qualifications:
  • Candidates will need to have a minimum of 2/3 years’ experience in a similar role within the Landscaping Industry.
  • Full drivers’ licence.
  • CSCS card holder.
  • Computer literacy with Word and Excel. Experience with AutoCAD and design is not essential but advantageous.
  • Great communication skills with clients, suppliers and employees.
  • Good decision making and problem solving to achieve maximum profits.
  • The ability to work on your own initiative.

Assistant Head Gardener

The peaceful and private 29-acre estate is a stable yard with the majority of acreage is pasture for the horses.  Separated by a Ha-ha ensuring uninterrupted views, the well-maintained gardens surrounding the property include formal gardens, Parterre, Herbaceous borders, rose garden, walled garden, vegetable garden, 3 greenhouses including a beautiful Hartley botanic greenhouse, Koi Pond, Old woodland, ancient oaks and wisteria.

The Assistant Head Gardener will be an arts and crafts gardener with a focus on specialist pruning, kitchen gardening, training and greenhouse management. He / She will be hands on carrying out the planting, sowing, pruning, growing, creative input and design ideas would be welcome, pest & disease treatments, planting and harvesting the produce which is shared on the estate. It is a diverse role so flexibility is key, the successful candidate will also assist with the general maintenance of the garden such as the mowing, strimming and weeding and the clients outsources the hedge cutting. Additional duties may be required such as occasional feeding and care of dogs (Great Dane and 2 dachshunds).

Applicants will ideally hold a horticultural qualification RHS or a recognised horticultural qualification and / or experience working on a private estate. Experience with Spray certificates PA1/PA6 and chainsaw would be advantageous but not essential as training can be provided. Applicants will have shown longevity and are looking for a long-term opportunity on a diverse and friendly estate. He / She must work well with others and be confident with their plant knowledge. Horse and animal lover is a plus!

The working hours are 5-day week Monday to Friday 8am -5pm with an hour for lunch. Flexibility is important as occasionally a half day on the weekend maybe required for watering in the greenhouse or when the owners are away for which time off in lieu will be given.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Sole Gardener to join the mature garden of a residential property located near Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire. The owner now requires an experienced gardener with a proven track record of managing a large mature English country garden to assist in the ongoing maintenance and development of the garden and grounds. The garden is mature and has been professionally designed and maintained therefore the owners are looking for a highly skilled candidate to keep the gardens at a high standard.  

Our client seeks an experienced gardener to help maintain the gardens on a year-round basis following the annual calendar. Applicants will possess an academic horticultural qualification, such as a Kew Diploma, RHS level 2 or equivalent, combined with extensive experience working in a similar role. As such, excellent plant knowledge and technical skills are essential for this position with experience in compost management, propagation, spraying, weeding and rejuvenating beds. A self-motivated, organised individual with a self-start attitude and proven track record of managing a large mature English country garden, with a strong work ethic, ability to work to their own initiative and willingness to work to consistently high standards are qualities which are essential for this role. Candidates will be flexible and willing to extend their duties where needed. As such, this is a physically demanding position which requires a fit and strong individual who is comfortable working in all weathers.

General maintenance duties will include but are not limited to pruning, propagating, weeding, edging and compost management. The owner is passionate about their garden and are open to ideas the Gardener will have with regards to the development of the gardens. The lawns are cared for by external contractors, therefore previous experience in managing contractors will be advantageous for prospective candidates. Experience in the use and maintenance of a wide range of gardening machinery as well as PA1 and PA6 spraying certificates, and a chainsaw certification are desirable for this position. The house is equipped with machinery, which the gardener should be capable of maintaining between services.

Head Gardener

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Head Gardener to lead a small team on a beautiful and established private estate near Hungerford, West Berkshire. This role would suit a knowledgeable and hands on gardener with previous experience as a Head Gardener.

The estate covers approximately 72-acres in total, with 25-acres being dedicated to the garden to varying degrees of formality.  The highly maintained gardens comprise wide herbaceous and grass borders, herb gardens, a large kitchen garden and walled gardens, wider shrub and woodland planting around a lake, with extensive natural woodlands, natural swimming ponds and water meadows. 

The Head Gardener will lead a team of three including one full time and two part time gardeners, to maintain the newly established garden to a high horticultural standard as well as continue to enhance and carry out ongoing projects such as tree planting.  The role will hands on with the team and involve general garden maintenance such as mowing, hedge cutting, strimming, pruning etc. in addition to the maintenance of all plantings, weed control, staking/wire supports, assistance within the woodland areas, maintenance of all lawn areas, wildflower areas and water meadows, seasonal bulb and pot planting, seed collection and propagation, maintenance of all drives, paths, terrace and tracks, maintaining the irrigation system, mulching, maintenance of garden features e.g. water features, sculptures, seating, checking drains, the maintenance of equipment, composting of waste on site, assisting with  vegetable, fruit, nut and cut flower production in the kitchen garden, maintenance of a natural swimming pond as well as general estate maintenance where necessary.

Suitable candidates will ideally hold academic horticultural qualifications at RHS Level 2 or above/equivalent as well as a minimum of 3 years’ experience as a Head Gardener on private estates.  Applicants should have good horticultural knowledge as well as some experience in plant propagation and kitchen gardening.  Physical fitness is essential as is an ability to safely operate garden machinery.  Chainsaw and chemical spray certificates would be beneficial. 

This is an excellent opportunity to join an impressive private estate, and to work alongside a great team.  The role is available to either be live in or live out. If live out, the salary would be up to £45,000 depending on experience and applicants will ideally live within a reasonable commute of Inkpen, Hungerford. In this role, you will play a pivotal part in ensuring the beauty and tranquillity of our gardens across Colten’s care homes. Your responsibilities encompass planning, design, maintenance, team management, and fostering strong community engagement.

About the position

You will elevate garden maintenance standards, collaborating with Senior Gardeners to design and implement impactful green spaces. Additionally, you'll oversee both small and large-scale landscape projects, working closely with internal teams and contractors.

Building and managing relationships are key aspects of this role. You will cultivate strong ties with in-house support departments, external organizations, and local suppliers to ensure the best quality plants and garden supplies at cost-effective prices. Efficiently managing relationships with contractors will be crucial for the success of larger-scale landscape projects.

Resident engagement is at the heart of our gardening philosophy. You will encourage Senior Gardeners to actively engage residents in gardening activities, fostering a sense of community and wellbeing. Additionally, you'll develop the team’s knowledge of caring for older individuals, particularly those with dementia, and promote resident interest and involvement in garden-related events.

Your responsibilities also extend to general garden upkeep, risk assessments, and ensuring safe work practices. Advocating for the benefits of fresh air, exercise, and a connection with nature, you'll manage departmental costs within budget constraints and conduct regular inspections to maintain safe gardens for residents.
