The estate is 26 acres in total with 14 acres of parkland, lakes and wildflower meadows. Surrounding the sublime Grade I listed property, the gardens consist of 12 acres of formal gardens with two walled gardens, cutting garden, a potager, kitchen garden, greenhouses, orchard, large herbaceous borders, lawns and a tennis court.

The gardens were redesigned in 2007 by a renowned landscaper designer and has an incredible structure in place. The role would suit a Head Gardener who is organised and experienced to drive the gardens forward and continue to enhance the character of the individual spaces with colour, scent and atmosphere. Longevity and a realistic maintenance programme being key factors. The gardens are open to the public occasionally and kept to a high horticultural standard.

The Head gardener will lead a friendly team of 3 gardeners (full and part time) who have built strong working relationships and create a positive atmosphere. The employers have a keen interest in their garden and are looking for a Head Gardener who will collaborate with them, take their garden and make it his/her passion to develop it.

The successful applicant will be hands on in all aspects of gardening on the property. Applicants will ideally hold a horticultural qualification and / or experience as a Head Gardener in a similar setting. The Head Gardener will have a proven track record, be a knowledgeable plants person and a good leader and team player. Spray certificates and chainsaw certificates would be advantageous, and a driving licence is essential.

The position is permanent and full time – 8 am to 4 pm including lunch and tea breaks or the client would be open to 4 days per week on a pro rata basis.

Head Gardener

An experienced and knowledgeable Head Gardener is sought to play a key role on the stunning gardens of a beautiful 17th century manor near Cirencester. Responsibilities
  • To oversee the day to day running of the nursery production and stock control functions.

  • Working with the MD and the senior managers to develop the Company’s systems for the purpose of improving efficiency and accuracy of the relevant processes.
  • Assist in researching and developing responses to regulatory change.

Head Gardener

Two new and exciting opportunities have arisen for an active and motivated Head Gardener and Assistant Gardener to join a stunning newly renovated 8-bedroom property near Altrincham which includes leisure pavilion and pool.  

There are 4 acres of gardens which are the culmination of 4 years careful planning.  Laid out with a variety of areas there is a classic frame of mature trees and hedges with a series of specific set piece areas.  These include large greenhouse and vegetable borders, patios and terraces and a series of herbaceous borders with lawned walkways, rockery and water gardens, all within a unique collection of planting.

Although only recently completed, the gardens have an instant maturity and range of textures that will flourish with the right care. The Head Gardener will be responsible for the maintenance of the gardens and grounds to a high standard throughout the year. He / She will produce and supply the house with vegetables, fruit and cut flowers and will also be requested to co-ordinate and supervise any contractors whilst working in the property grounds.

The successful applicant will have 5 years’ experience in a similar role and strong plant knowledge and horticultural skills. They will be excellent at timekeeping, flexibility and attention to detail. Ability to work unsupervised and on own initiative is essential as well as they must work well as part of a team and be able to liaise well with other staff. It is important that the gardener has discretion at all times and a respectful attitude towards the principals and their property. The ideal candidate will be physically fit and have a positive disposition - someone who takes pride in their work. Candidates should also be experience in using and maintaining a range of garden machinery and have a full, clean driving licence.

The working week is Monday - Friday, with flexibility required as determined by weather conditions.  Some evening and weekend work will be required, including harvesting of fruit and vegetables, summer watering and similar season-dependent tasks for which, time off in lieu will be given.

This is a long-term position requiring commitment and flexibility and a positive attitude is essential.  Fluent English required.
