As Gardens Manager, you will ensure the gardens receive the high level of direction they require so that they reach their full potential. Demonstrable experience of running a similar department within an estate of a comparable size is essential. Knowledge of the Health and Safety at Work Act is also required, and you will need to be competent in the handling of chemicals or fuels and the safe operation of various types of machinery.

Experienced Gardener

A self-motivated and experienced gardener is sought after on a full time and permanent basis for a stunning private garden in Shepton Mallet, Somerset.

The 18th century estate located near the Mendips hills area of outstanding natural beauty is surrounded by a working farm and woodland. The gardens consist of about 4 acres of formal gardens, kitchen garden, water garden, woodland garden and cottage gardens. These include mixed and herbaceous terraced borders, potted plants, greenhouse and cold frames, 2 parterres, topiary, mature and young trees and extensive lawns. The kitchen garden provides the owners with fruit and vegetable throughout the year.

The owners are very passionate about their garden and are looking for an experienced and hands on gardener to work closely with them to maintain and manage the garden to a high horticultural standard as well as enhancing the garden when required. Responsibilities will include, but not limited to; propagation, weeding, vegetable and fruit growing, deadheading and specialist pruning. There are two groundsmen currently working on site focusing on the general maintenance such as the mowing, strimming and hedge cutting of the main garden as well as the gardens surrounding the tenanted cottages.

Applicants should ideally have level 3 horticultural qualification, combined with excellent plant and tree knowledge, excellent technical skills and previous experience working on private estates.  Experience in propagation as well as growing fruit and vegetables is required for the role. The garden is run organically, therefore a good understanding of organic principles, composting and leaf mulching knowledge is essential.

The successful applicant will need to be very organised, able to plan and prioritise workload and work to a high standard. He / She will be good at record keeping and keep a gardening diary. The gardener will be physically fit and should have a flexible attitude regarding the day structure and comfortable with dogs, chickens, horses and cattle. The ability to operate a range of garden machinery and good craft skills are also desirable for the role. A full UK driving licence is essential.

Their contracts are typically on large public, commercial, industrial, and housing sites geographically spread throughout South Wales and South West England. They do not generally undertake any domestic garden contracts for private individuals. Our clients landscape construction contracts are typically associated with new commercial buildings, schools, hospitals, housing and associated infrastructure and roads etc., or they involve carrying out environmental improvements to established town centres, residential or industrial areas. In addition to maintaining schemes that they have put in place they also have grounds maintenance teams that are responsible for maintaining a large number of established commercial, retail and residential properties that range from small, sheltered housing complexes for elderly persons through to housing estates exceeding 400 units. The sports projects are often associated with schools or public parks.

The Role:

The Estimator role involves working with an assistant and in liaison with the directors and contracts management staff. Being responsible for compiling formal tenders/quotations for new works, which usually requires putting together a schedule of works, taking information from drawings/specifications that have been provided to the client. Our client uses estimating software which is widely used within the construction industry, but our clients software has been heavily customised to suit their needs as a specialist construction subcontractor.

Job Description:

The successful applicant will also need to have good literacy, and computer skills as you will be required to use the full suite of Microsoft Office software. You will also need to be able to demonstrate the following key skills:

-Very good attention to detail as you will be required to create detailed schedules of work using information taken from drawings and so to ensure that quotations are accurate and compiled in accordance with the clients requirements, the drawings and associated information provided must be interpreted accurately

-The ability to work to tight deadlines and to co-ordinate the efforts of the assistant to ensure that deadlines are met

-Excellent communication and negotiation skills and the ability to liaise with clients, suppliers, subcontractors and staff within the organisation at all levels

-Excellent technical knowledge in both hard and ideally soft landscaping although the specialist software will provide you with comprehensive library information to assist you with pricing up soft landscape works

-A strong commercial awareness

Key Skills:

Key tasks with support from your Estimating Assistant will include:

-Ensuring that management are aware of opportunities for new projects that are advertised on-line for example through the Sell2Wales portal

-Undertaking pre-tender site inspections and on occasions attending pre-tender and pre-contract interviews

-Ensuring that all tender/quotation enquiries are entered upon receipt onto the database and that all information provided is saved to the IT system.

-Printing off drawings, specifications and other such information from e-mail enquiries.

-Taking information from drawings, (including measuring/calculating areas with specialist software) and specifications and using this information to create a Schedule of Works where a Schedule of Works/Bill of Quantities has not been provided.

-Contacting suppliers and specialist subcontractors to obtain quotations as necessary and completing supplier/subcontractor price comparisons using MS Excel.

-Compiling our tender/quotation using the estimating software and applying mark-up etc. after reviewing the current commercial considerations with the directors.

-Maintaining our estimating software library with up-to-date information.

-Following up on tenders/quotations that have submitted to establish who the successful main contractor is and where possible, to gain some feedback as to which areas of a quotation that were least competitive on when the tender/quotation is unsuccessful for future reference.

You will also be expected to contribute to the wider management of the business through regular informal discussion sessions and participation at quarterly staff meetings and through undertaking staff appraisals with the assistant.

Experienced Gardener

A passionate and experienced Gardener / Plantsman is sought after to maintain a beautiful 3-acre private garden in Weybridge, Surrey.

The garden was extensively redeveloped 10 years ago and has recently undergone further developments. This stunning garden has previously been featured in homes & gardens and is being kept to a high standard. The gardens surrounding the house consists of extensive lawns, flower beds, borders, shrubs, kitchen garden, raised beds, green house, a variety of mature and young trees and at the end of a garden is a lake. The kitchen garden / raised beds supply the house with fruit and vegetables and propagation is carried out in the greenhouse.

The owners have a real passion for their garden and are looking for an experienced gardener to manage and maintain the garden with minimal supervision to a high horticultural standard. As the sole gardener, you will be expected to undertake a range of normal gardening duties including weeding, specialist pruning, planting, etc. Additional assistance can be provided during the busier period for the hedge cutting and lawn care if required.

The ideal candidate will be a true plantsman, have good plant identification and knowledge of the seasons. Applicants should ideally have a minimum level 2 horticultural qualification and have previous experience working on a private estate. Although sprays are used to a minimum, a spray certificate PA1/PA6 would be an advantage. Chainsaw certificate and driving licence would also be ideal.

Other requirements for the role are good communications skills and ability to oversee contractors as and when onsite. The gardener should be happy to work outside in all weathers, have the drive to get the job done to a high standard and a have a vision for maintaining and enhancing the garden as required. With an extensive range of equipment onsite, the successful applicant will be expected to operate a range of garden machinery and have good craft skills. A truck is provided with the position for the sole use of the gardener hence a driving licence is essential.

We have a very exciting opportunity now open specifically within the alpine division of the business. We wish to recruit a skilled Head Grower to join and oversee the experienced team. The individual will be joining a very stable and successful family business with a rich heritage built over 4 generations of growing. 

The role encompasses the oversight of over 700 different varieties of alpines across 20+ acres of varying production facilities. This starts at a production level, having a collaborative input into daily production and product placement alongside the Operations Manager. Then continues throughout the growth of the plants, implementing a comprehensive ICM programme incorporating pest and disease management, irrigation and feed management.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

-Manage all areas of an ICM (integrated crop management) scheme across all sites. Areas assigned to the growing team, to include water management, environmental management, IPM and crop protection.

-Implement and manage a weed control strategy across department production and sites.

-Manage daily tasks and working hours of the growing team.

-Manage the wastage recording procedure across division working closely with Head of department and QA team.

-All areas of product selection working with the Operations Manager and Head of department including plug choice, supplier choice, growing media and associated raw materials to deliver quality products that achieve set specification and quality throughout.

-Manage daily production space planning and product placement in collaboration with Operations Manager and Head of department

-Oversee the implemented Plug QA and credit system.

-Manage the recording of all production across sites delivering accurate data which can be used by the business.

-Oversee and implement production methods and techniques to maximise product quality and efficiencies.

-Manage daily the workload and working hours of specific production teams, liaising with the Operations manager as to workload priority.

-Report site management issues to maintenance team specifically in relation to equipment and environmental equipment.

-Keep abreast of product lifting and target schedules.

-Implement and manage direct team’s H&S requirements.

-Complete and oversee team’s training and development.

Additional to the focus on alpine growing the role oversees the management of over 1/2 million Hardy ornamental container grown plants, including shrubs & herbaceous perennials.  

The role also involves the leadership of the growing team currently made up of 4+ skilled growers. These work over various sites and have varying horticultural specialisms. The individual is in charge of staff rotas, delegating tasks, managing workloads, monitoring output, providing training and ensuring the development of each individual.

The ideal candidate will be an accomplished alpine Grower with a wealth of experience and knowledge within the specific field. Additional experience working with HNS and herbaceous perennials is essential also. An extensive understanding of the entire alpine production and growing process is required, including an appreciation for all frequently used machinery. A track record within the horticultural sector must be held including relevant training and qualifications. They must be a breast of industry changes including new laws and regulations. A thorough understanding of both indoor and outdoor growing techniques is required.

The successful candidate must have excellent communication skills able to lead and inspire the growing team and collaborate on a daily basis with the Operations Manager. The ability to provide feedback and weekly reports to Managers and the Company Board is essential as well as reporting concerns and working collectively with the QA team. Competent computer skills are needed, including the ability to manage Microsoft Word, excel, outlook plus internal programs. Good organisational skills are essential in order to manage schedules and ensure product specifications are met on time.

Head Gardener

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Head Gardener to play a key role in the ongoing development and enhancement of a beautiful private estate in Cavan, Ireland.  The position will involve day-to-day hands-on leadership and supervision of a team of gardeners in all aspects of the horticulturally diverse and developing garden.  Applications are sought from experienced and academically qualified Head/Senior Gardeners with high energy and a creative eye from a horticultural perspective.  A 1-bed cottage is available on site, rent free, though is only large enough for a single occupant or a couple.

The successful candidate will work with the property owner and Estate Manager with a view to bringing the historic gardens back to their former style and glory, with a modern twist and practical application in line with the theme of the estate.  This role will suit a horticulturist with demonstrable experience at senior level within private service, excellent time management skills, strong horticultural knowledge, and desire to take on a dynamic garden enhancement opportunity.  The estate plays host to weddings, with food at the highest level being a primary focus and an exciting draw for visitors.

Set within approximately 100-acres, the 18th Century estate was purchased by the current owner six years ago and has been constantly evolving throughout this time.  The varied and beautiful site is set within a historic deer park, with stunning scenery including woodland, a lake and many formal gardens surrounding the main buildings.  The formal and natural gardens comprise a walled garden, a 1-acre apple orchard with five varieties, a winter garden, a woodland garden, a perennial garden, mixed and herbaceous beds and borders, with hedges and specimen trees throughout.  Approximately 2.5-acres have been recently stripped and are in need of renovation and creative input.  A field for growing hardy produce and six polytunnels allow food to be grown for guests on a year-round basis. 

The Head Gardener will manage and supervise a small team of assistant gardeners (three at present) and will be involved with any further recruitment of garden staff as deemed necessary.   The successful applicant will also work under and alongside the Estate Manager in terms of site development and operational planning.   Applicants must therefore be excellent communicators and be able to manage staff with diplomacy and positivity, whilst always maintaining communication with the Estate Manager and consideration for the property owner’s vision for the garden.  The property owners are genuinely enthusiastic and dedicated to their gardens and as such, this role will be varied and interesting with a high standard of horticulture required.

Applications are sought from experienced and knowledgeable private estate Senior/Head Gardeners who will have assumed responsibility of a large private garden and garden staff management, previously.   Suitable candidates will be confident yet humble and considerate, motivated, organised and professional hands-on Head or Senior Gardeners who are able to inspire their team.  The post holder will be socially confident with excellent communication skills and an ability and willingness to liaise with other property staff and engage positively with the owners and guests where necessary.  Good organisational experience and a demonstrable understanding of all areas of garden management are essential, with ideal applicants being academically qualified to RHS Level 3 or above with excellent physical fitness, plant identification skills and an ability to operate and maintain a range of garden machinery.  The Head Gardener should be able to carry out plant P&D management, plant propagation and glasshouse work as well as and kitchen gardening to a high standard.

The team pride themselves on delivering high-quality landscape design and maintenance and excellent customer service.  The majority of work comes from private residential gardens, with hard landscaping projects being undertaken from conception to completion and maintained thereafter. Clients include award winning Chelsea Flower show gardens, roof terraces, commercial landscape installations and garden event installations.

An exciting opportunity has become available for a Hard Landscape Foreman with previous experience in supervising a small team, as well as working alone on a variety of landscaping projects.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrable history of hard landscaping on a range of project sizes and must be fully qualified and experienced in paving, fencing, brick/blockwork, timber decking, composite decking, and irrigation systems.  The successful applicant will provide supervision to a team of 3-4 staff and carry out projects alone where required. Responsibilities include liaising directly with the client from a customer service and design/implementation perspective, reading and setting out scale drawings and working to specifications.  A full driving licence is required for the role.

This role is a full-time permanent and fully employed position.  A work vehicle will be provided for travel to and from work and for work activities following successful completion of a probationary period.  Benefits include training support, 28 days holiday and a company pension scheme.
