Your Mission

Key Requirements
- Minimum of five years live plant growing experience
- A recognised qualification in horticulture and agronomy.
- Experience in space/capacity planning for optimum and efficient crop production.
- To have a clear understanding of DEFRA and IPPFFS rules and regulations
- Be a dynamic ‘hands-on’ grower.
- Be computer literate with knowledge of glasshouse computer control systems.
- Ability to inspire, enthuse and motivate a team.
- Diligent initiative-taker with the ability to develop better processes.
- Lead the high standards of growing and product care across all product categories from start to finish. Ensure adequate training is given to all staff.
- Spraying, fertilizers, applications, and plant health compliance
- Determine plant growing conditions in greenhouses, including temperature control, irrigation, planting, and care schedules.
- Care for all needs of cuttings, including sticking, watering, misting, spraying, and feeding.
- Position and regulate plant irrigation systems and program environmental and irrigation control.
- Responsibility not just for the day-to-day growing of plants but also the implementation and introduction of smarter and reliable growing processes, lighting, temperature, growing media, nutrition, and monitoring the overall health of plants.

Our client is one of London’s finest private residences, a spectacular Grade II listed 30,000 sqft Georgian mansion, which has undergone a ten-year extensive restoration and meticulous refurbishment. This magnificent property is situated in Southwest London just moments from Richmond Park.
Its three-acre estate has been dramatically re-presented by a celebrated landscape architect, Todd Longstaffe-Gowan and includes green house, potager, extensive lawns, parterres, mixed shrub and herbaceous borders, flower gardens, sunken secluded Italian garden, water features, mature trees and woodland planting, extensive yew hedges and topiary, a championship-standard outdoor tennis court, outdoor swimming pool, paddock, stabling and other outbuildings.
The client also owns and manages a number of Award-winning Executive homes in the area, each having smaller but beautifully designed and stocked family gardens, having a range of mature trees, plants and lawns.
The owners are seeking to employ an experienced and dynamic Head Gardener who will have excellent horticultural knowledge and have experience of, or affinity with, historic gardens, and a passion for maintaining grounds to the highest standards, working closely in line with the owners’ vision. The role will be supported by a small team and seasonal help.
It is essential to hold an academic horticultural qualification at Level 3 or above and ideally CS30/CS31 and PA1/PA6A certificates. The successful applicant will work with the client to create and deliver the agreed strategies for our short, medium and long-term goals, including agreeing and managing the budget. Responsibilities will include:
- the development and implementation of annual management plans for the estate’s gardens, formal parterre, herbaceous borders, greenhouse, vegetable/fruit gardens, lawns, water features, and newly planted and existing mature trees, liaising with specialist sub-contractors, where appropriate.
- maintain or improve the existing gardens, including some hard landscaping, while also undertaking new projects. All this work will be undertaken with a great eye for detail and a passion to achieve the highest standards.
- have a detailed knowledge of the watering requirements for all plantings and manage the irrigation system to that effect. The irrigation system is under an annual maintenance contract, although experience of minor repairs and adjustments is essential.
- Assist with the implementation of sound Health and Safety practice, machinery and equipment maintenance. You will be able to handle a wide range of garden machinery, including tractors, mowers and chainsaws. The ability to maintain machinery is a bonus.
Candidates will be flexible and sensitive in respecting the principles of landscape design and have the imagination to retain and adapt these as necessary. The successful candidate will be highly self-motivated, energetic and enthusiastic, with a hands-on, proactive can-do attitude, excellent time management skills and you must be willing and able to work and join in as part of the wider team on the estate.

The landscaping team, of around 10 members, covers all aspects of domestic and commercial landscaping within North Devon and the surrounding areas. Now an exciting opportunity for an experienced, hard working and enthusiastic person who has strong knowledge of the industry, both hard and soft, to join the team and take on many of the tasks currently undertaken by one of the company directors who is looking to take a step back.
Key responsibilities:
Candidates will be working on exciting projects, ranging up to £150,000 in value with multiple projects running at any one time. Main tasks will include but are not limited to:
- Undertake site visits, surveys and meetings with clients as required to discuss projects.
- Basic site surveys, review of drawings and any bills or quantities, then preparation of appropriate quotations.
- Assessing risk and maintaining a safe working environment with regular toolbox talks and record keeping.
- Purchasing and stock control
- Create handover packs and carry out ongoing monitoring of the installation teams during projects.
- Daily processing of worksheets to allow close monitoring of labour and material costs on each project, plus identification of any extras.
- Identify any training needs within the team.
- Invoicing of completed work.
- Active involvement in recruitment of employees.
- Attend regular production meetings with the Directors.
Candidate Experience/Qualifications:
- Candidates will need to have a minimum of 2/3 years’ experience in a similar role within the Landscaping Industry.
- Full drivers’ licence.
- CSCS card holder.
- Computer literacy with Word and Excel. Experience with AutoCAD and design is not essential but advantageous.
- Great communication skills with clients, suppliers and employees.
- Good decision making and problem solving to achieve maximum profits.
- The ability to work on your own initiative.

Head Gardener
An excellent opportunity has become available for a Head Gardener for a large estate in Oxfordshire. The successful candidate will be in charge of the ongoing maintenance of the entire garden throughout the seasons, with a view to increase the horticultural standard.
The moated property is encompassed by diverse, established gardens, featuring a 3-acre walled garden, herbaceous borders, vegetable garden, yew and box hedging and a combination of both formal and informal lawns, including an island lawn within the moat. The wider estate expands for a further three acres, featuring a mixture of parkland combined with young and mature trees.
The key focus for the Head Gardener will be to bring passion into and raise the standards within the garden to a high horticultural standard. Additionally, the owners are keen to progress the vegetable garden and begin to regularly provide seasonal produce to the main house. The successful candidate will be a knowledgeable and experienced gardener, with extensive plant knowledge, able to properly care for herbaceous borders, an eye for detail, and have demonstratable experience within a similar setting. The ideal candidate will also demonstrate a positive and approachable attitude, with the ability to manage their own workload throughout the seasons. Relevant horticultural qualifications are desirable but not essential, alongside the addition of industry related tickets such as PA1/PA6 spraying and chainsaw certification.
This is an amazing opportunity for a gardener who is searching for a long-term position to implement their skills, while developing an established garden. In addition, the newly appointed Head Gardener will be involved in the future recruitment of an undergardener. The position is full time, Monday to Friday. Furthermore, accommodation is available to the successful candidate via an assured short hold tenancy agreement if required.

Assistant Head Gardener
A friendly, motivated and all rounded Assistant Head Gardener is required to work closely with the Head Gardener to further develop the gardens of a beautiful Grade II* listed 16th century Farmhouse based in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire. The position is full time and permanent.
The peaceful and private 29-acre estate is a stable yard with the majority of acreage is pasture for the horses. Separated by a Ha-ha ensuring uninterrupted views, the well-maintained gardens surrounding the property include formal gardens, Parterre, Herbaceous borders, rose garden, walled garden, vegetable garden, 3 greenhouses including a beautiful Hartley botanic greenhouse, Koi Pond, Old woodland, ancient oaks and wisteria.
The Assistant Head Gardener will be an arts and crafts gardener with a focus on specialist pruning, kitchen gardening, training and greenhouse management. He / She will be hands on carrying out the planting, sowing, pruning, growing, creative input and design ideas would be welcome, pest & disease treatments, planting and harvesting the produce which is shared on the estate. It is a diverse role so flexibility is key, the successful candidate will also assist with the general maintenance of the garden such as the mowing, strimming and weeding and the clients outsources the hedge cutting. Additional duties may be required such as occasional feeding and care of dogs (Great Dane and 2 dachshunds).
Applicants will ideally hold a horticultural qualification RHS or a recognised horticultural qualification and / or experience working on a private estate. Experience with Spray certificates PA1/PA6 and chainsaw would be advantageous but not essential as training can be provided. Applicants will have shown longevity and are looking for a long-term opportunity on a diverse and friendly estate. He / She must work well with others and be confident with their plant knowledge. Horse and animal lover is a plus!
The working hours are 5-day week Monday to Friday 8am -5pm with an hour for lunch. Flexibility is important as occasionally a half day on the weekend maybe required for watering in the greenhouse or when the owners are away for which time off in lieu will be given.
SALARY: £35,000 - £40,000 DOE
