Job Description:

Duties and responsibilities would include the following:

Head Gardener

An incredible opportunity has become available for an experienced and knowledgeable Head Gardener to manage the horticultural features in the gardens and ground of a beautiful estate near Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire. The position is full time and permanent basis and will manage a team of 5 gardeners and groundpeople.

The majority of the 550-acre estate is grazed with about 50 acres surrounding the main house require the attention of the Head Gardener and their team. The gardens and pleasure grounds consist of a formal terrace with formal parterres, extensive lawns, mature trees including copper beech trees, oak, yews and cedars, ornamental shrubs, and woodland area. There is a walled kitchen garden, that is currently used for ornamental purposes and has the potential to be restored for productive purposes as well. There are two greenhouses onsite used for propagation and growing vegetables. The gardens also include fishponds, water features, swimming pool and tennis court.

The Head Gardener will be responsible for the maintenance of the gardens and all horticultural tasks on the Estate to a professional standard. He / She will plan the planting programmes to provide seasonal interest within the borders, and prepare annual maintenance schedules for the borders, trees and lawns and will liaise with the Principles and the Estate Manager on any changes to the planting schemes and planting of external pots and troughs throughout year. The health of plants in the extensive herbaceous beds are to be monitored and maintained including pruning, staking, feeding and spraying.  The successful candidate will schedule and supervise the necessary work for the team of gardeners and will work very closely with the Estate Manger to achieve this.

The Head gardener will be on call once a month on a Sunday to assist with any matters on the Estate and provide any assistance to the principles. Additional responsibilities include assisting with water duties during the summer months including weekends.

Applicants should ideally have experience as a Head gardener or experienced gardener working on a private estate, managing a small team. He / She will have excellent plant knowledge and excellent technical skills.  It is important that the Head Gardener has a good understanding of Health and Safety requirements noting that all duties must be carried out to comply with current Health & Safety at Work legislation. Any defects or Health and Safety concerns, no matter what its nature are to be reported to the Estate Manager immediately. The Head Gardener will have experience using and maintaining a range of basic garden machinery.  A UK driving licence is essential.

A courtyard house is provided as accommodation for the successful applicant. Council tax and utility bills are paid by the employer. The house is fully furnished and can be kept that way if required by the tenants or can be emptied out if the tenant wishes to bring their own furniture. Partners, children and pets are welcome.

Deputy Head Gardener

Applications are invited for the position of Deputy Head Gardener for the gardens of a family-owned estate in East Sussex.

The Estate comprises of stunning woodlands and extensive pasture stretching over 500 acres. The family’s vision is to achieve an estate that is highly sustainable, supports a rich array of biodiversity along with recreational enjoyment for the family and its guests.

In the immediate vicinity of the Manor House there are over 15 acres of private gardens containing formal areas, lawns, two lakes, a river, orchard, kitchen garden as well as other self-contained gardens.  It is a primary aim for the gardens to be well kept and maintained to a high standard.  The family have a strong ecological approach to gardening promoting organic practices and maintaining natural and wild areas. 

The family have a desire to be involved and the Deputy Head Gardener will work closely with, and advise, them to bring their mutual vision to life.  The experienced gardener will also need to work under their own initiative to manage as well as bring in new ideas to revive the gardens.

Key responsibilities will include:
  • Maintenance and upkeep of all areas of the gardens
  • Maintenance and upkeep of compost/leaf mould/ soil conditions
  • Work closely with the owners to redesign and replant the gardens with the aim to encourage biodiversity
  • Overview and advice on planting and rotation of vegetable garden including use of companion planting
  • Managing and motivating a small horticultural team, delegating tasks where necessary
  • Management and removal of invasive species i.e., bindweed, bamboo, ground elder
  • Identifying plants that are stressed and or diseased and resolving them.

A current driving licence, chainsaw licence for maintenance, cross cutting and felling are desirable as well as having lake/pond knowledge, such as control of invasive weeds/ algae, aquatic plants and knowledge of how to improve water quality and biodiversity is also extremely useful in this senior role. A rare opportunity has arisen for a talented horticulturist to join one of the most beautiful gardens between Cork and Waterford in Ireland, on a full-time permanent basis.  This position will suit an experienced Senior Gardener or an existing Head Gardener with a desire to take on a large and diverse garden in order to utilise their full horticultural skill set.  The owners are also open to considering Head Gardener / Housekeeper couple to join.

Set within 140-acres, the 7-acre garden is a signature feature of the estate. Some specimen trees and shrubs date back to the early 19th century and include four Irish yews and one of the largest cork oaks in the country. Swathes of primroses, daffodils and bluebells are offset by magnificent magnolias, rhododendrons, and camellias. In addition, there is a two-acre walled garden to be developed. The opportunity to extend the gardens into the surrounding meadows including areas that could be turned to wild grasses.

 The gardens are open to the public potentially 60 days per annum. The successful applicant will work closely with the property owner on all aspects of the garden and its management, including conducting private tours for visitors occasionally.

This new opportunity will suit an experienced and qualified horticulturist with excellent attention to detail, with garden planning and staff supervision experience.  The successful applicant will work with and report to the owners and as such, the role will suit a senior level gardener.  Applicants should be equally passionate, energetic and experienced hands-on professionals.

Suitable applicants will possess basic horticultural qualifications and experience in horticulturally diverse gardens, good physical fitness, and excellent plant and tree identification and management skills.  Practical experience with a full range of garden machinery is desired, including chemical spray certificates, chainsaw operation, garden budget management experience.

We seek applications from experienced professional gardeners for the position of Head Gardener on a country estate in Somerset.

Within the estate there are approximately 3 acres of formal gardens surrounding the grade II listed manor house. The gardens command far reaching views of the Somerset countryside and consist of lawns, herbaceous borders, rose beds, terraces, shrubberies and a vegetable garden which includes an area of soft fruit and fruit trees. As Head Gardener you will be responsible for supervising 1 other gardener, and together ensuring that the gardens and grounds are maintained to a consistently high standard throughout the year. Candidates must have a high level horticultural knowledge combined with excellent practical skills, be able to plan and prepare both short and long term maintenance and planting schedules, as well as delegate duties, and manage outside contractors as and when required. Experienced Gardener

A self-motivated and driven Sole Gardener is sought after on a full time and permanent basis for a 5-acre private garden near Basingstoke, Hampshire.

This stunning Georgian house overlooks agricultural land to the south and the extensive gardens are made up of 7 rooms. These rooms include a walled garden close to the house and a various surrounding rose gardens, extensive lawns, herbaceous and shrub borders and a tennis court.   The eastern garden has yew hedges and topiary and mature specimen conifers leading east through a wisteria walk into the kitchen garden with raised beds, two greenhouses for growing vegetables and fruits and a cutting garden.

The friendly owners are garden enthusiasts. They are open to new ideas for their garden and would like a horticulturist with a positive attitude and a passion for plants to come onboard to drive their garden forward. Where the gardens have been open for charity events in the past, they would like to enhance the garden to potentially open for events again in the future. A leading landscape designer, Taylor Tripp, visit the garden twice per year to provide their input and the sole gardener will work closely with them.

Applicants should ideally have a minimum level 2 horticultural qualification and previous experience working in a similar environment. PA1/PA6 spray certificates, combined with experience growing fruit and vegetables as well as specialist pruning is required for the role. Due to the rural locality, a full UK driving licence and own vehicle is essential.

A full time groundsperson currently works onsite and they are responsible for the repairs, maintenance of the machinery, lawncare including scarifying and hedgecutting. The sole gardener will be responsible for the finer horticultural aspects of the garden and will work alongside the groundsperson.
