A busy online plant nursery based in the South West is looking to appoint an experienced commercial grower as its Production Manager on a full time and permanent basis.

The Production Manager will be part of the company’s management team, working closely with the directors and other line managers so a commercial approach to the business requirements of online plant nursery is necessary. This is not a passive role responding to instructions; the Production Manager is expected to take an active part, within the management group. This includes generating new ideas, having input into which are to be pursued and then helping execute whatever plan is decided upon.

The right candidate will need the following skills:

-Good experience and training in protected growing (polytunnels), soft (and top) fruit, hardy nursery stock.

-Management of horticultural crops from seed (sweet peas, cosmos, herbs), perennials and hardy’s.

-Experienced cuttings propagator.

-Experience and knowledge of growing potted plants and nursery stock.

-Ability and understanding of the importance of maintaining records on the growing operation.

-Prepared and able to train and supervise subordinate personnel in greenhouse operations and in the proper horticultural methods and techniques of growing.

Synchronised crop delivery and crop management is key, as is managing crop growing programmes. The successful candidate will have a scientific understanding of plant health and culture and experience of commercial nursery/growing. Job brief

An experienced Horticulture Manager is sought after to take responsibility for the care and maintenance of all plant stock including both indoor and outdoor plants held within greenhouses, polytunnels and outdoor spaces.

You will be responsible for purchasing all necessary materials, plant feeds, pesticides etc. to enable you to perform your duties.

You will also be required to source, and purchase plants direct from Holland and other continental growers, as well as specialist liaising and building strong working relationships with Dutch suppliers and growers to source unique plants.

As part of the calendar of events you will manage a small team to assist with the maintenance and watering of plants and also the make-up of plants and planters for the events working to tight deadlines.

During certain times of the year, you may be asked to work with the team on event sites with prestigious clients, advising and leading the planting team and working to fulfil the client briefs to complete the spaces. There may also be an opportunity to work with clients on an international level.

We also have a number of onsite grounds contracts for high-level commercial and private clients, so you would be required to manage and maintain planting plans, landscaping and maintenance for these sites with a support team.

The position is both physically and mentally demanding with long working hours during the summer months. Strong management skills and an ability to adapt to fast moving changes are essential to the successful performance of this role.

Responsibilities

Head Gardener

An experienced and responsible Head Gardener is required to work in an incredible private garden and estate in the New Forest.  It is an exciting opportunity to join the new owners as they take on the management of the existing garden and landscape as well as being a part of the development of several new areas of garden. 

The site is 180 acres of varying landscape from historic parkland, woodland, ponds, wetlands, equestrian paddocks and mixed grasslands. About 5 acres are the formal garden areas which are a mixture of woodland garden, mixed shrub and herbaceous borders, orchard, food production, composting areas & formal lawns. There are several greenhouses and a walled garden which will be undergoing a comprehensive redesign as part of the new works. These works will be undertaken by external contractors and overseen by the Client’s Landscape Designer who will also project manage them.  At the heart of the redesign will be food production as well as cut flowers for the house so experience in kitchen gardening is key.  There is also a tennis court and equestrian facilities on site.

The successful candidate should have strong horticultural knowledge, as well as extensive experience in both administrative and practical management of gardens and landscapes throughout the year and proven supervisory experience. The position is full time, and the head gardener will be required to work with and manage other garden staff and coordinate with external contractors, as required, for specialist horticultural works. They will be expected to manage, programme and oversee any external maintenance and service contractors for items such as the irrigation, potential grazing and various energy elements. It will also be necessary for them to gain a working understanding of the relevant equipment for day-to-day management. They will be expected to keep up-to-date records and daily diaries accordingly.

The Head Gardener will be expected to maintain the grounds to the highest horticultural standards throughout the seasons and have a sound understanding of general garden machinery, their uses and maintenance They should be willing to undertake training as required and qualifications in spraying (PA1 and PA6), hedge-cutting and chainsaw use would be an advantage. They should be good at budget planning and have a comprehensive understanding of the relevant Health and Safety Regulations, environmental management, manual handling and risk assessment. References will be required.

Candidates must have excellent interpersonal skills, be self-motivated and capable of working as part of a team, have a valid driving license and be comfortable around animals.

Head Gardener

An experienced Head Gardener is sought after on a full time and permanent basis for a beautiful private estate situated in a Buckinghamshire village. The estate is comprised of a large historic Victorian mansion with formal lawns and gardens (5 acres) plus woodland and tenanted farmland totalling 110 acres. There is a sizeable walled garden with swimming pool, tennis court, and a working kitchen and flower garden.  There are several wooded areas that have been brought back in hand with further tree and shrub planting planned for the future.

The family has lived on the estate for 21 years and has lovingly restored the house and grounds to their former glory. There are a significant number of mature specimen trees that add to the ambience of the grounds. There is a full time Estate Manager and Under Gardener.

The successful applicant will have substantial practical experience of managing and maintaining extensive grounds and gardens. This is a hands-on role which requires not only strong physical attributes but the ability to lead and communicate effectively with co-workers. It will be a key requirement that the candidate can plan and implement seasonal works programmes as well as delegate duties to the Under Gardener. With the potential to further development the garden (planting trees and shrubs, landscaping, new flower beds, etc.) that will ensure that the job is varied and interesting.   However, it requires being able to plan in advance, and have a structured daily and weekly works programme.   The owner takes a keen interest in the estate development and will assist in planning.

Academic qualifications are preferred but not essential. The candidate should be skilled at operating and maintaining garden machinery, and have the requisite spray certificates, chainsaw and driving licence.

The hours of work are seasonal – high season: 8:00 am or earlier until 5:00 pm. Low season: 8:00 am – 4:00 pm (daylight hours). One hour break for lunch. Annual leave is four weeks with no more than two weeks to be taken consecutively unless agreed with the employer.

There is a dedicated 3-bedroom bungalow within the estate for the Head Gardener at a rental fee of £500 per month. The bungalow has a self-contained sun terrace, glass house and rear garden, with immediate access to the grounds.

Some experience working with ponds and water features would be useful but not essential. You must be well presented and able to liaise with clients and designers effectively.

You should also be able to supervise, train and motivate labourers and apprentices. A good level of spoken English is required as well as be physically fit and able to work in all weather conditions. -Ensuring the team deliver a high quality of workmanship covering all aspects of hard and soft landscaping, groundworks and fencing.

-Applying a commercial understanding to the operation and using this understanding to work with budgets and drive efficiency.

-Working with designs and plans to ensure accuracy. This person will often need to be the first point of contact for designers.

-Managing the team safely and effectively across a broad range of tasks including: Digging, rotavating, paving, brickwork, rendering, planting, mulching, using machinery and other related tasks.

-Providing a responsive and professional service to the customers and delivering effective communication. This person will often need to be the first point of contact for customers when on site.

-Dealing promptly with issues arising and escalating them immediately to the company owner.

-To promote and comply with Health and Safety legislation and company policies and procedures.

The successful candidate will have a minimum of 5 years of experience in hard landscaping and have commercial awareness as well as proven experience in leading and managing teams. He / She will have excellent organisation and problem-solving skills, be self-motivated, well-presented and able to demonstrate that they can be continuously assertive, proactive and self-starting. Confidence using a range of garden machinery and power tools is essential.  

The role is a full time, permanent position and will involve driving and travel into London and other areas in the South. A van is provided with the role and applicants must therefore have a full, clean driving licence and the ability to be mobile and flexible with hours.
