Job Brief

With the continued growth of the company, as Contracts Manager you will be responsible for delivering a number of high-quality soft landscaping contracting services valued on average, around £500K. The types of contracts you’ll be managing will be soft landscaping projects based on construction sites for Schools, Hospitals and Business Parks located in the West Yorkshire area.

For this position, if you are currently an existing Contracts Manager, Foreman or Assistant Contracts Manager with knowledge and experience in Landscaping and/or Horticulture and working on construction sites, please apply.

Responsibilities

Requirements

Already an experienced Contracts Manager within the land-based sector, you will have a wealth of experience in delivering high quality projects and principal contractor project management, in a timely and efficient manner.

Good contractual awareness including experience of managing works in accordance with NEC3, NEC4, JCT & JCLI forms of contract.

A professional qualification in landscaping, horticulture, or other land-based industry.

Commercial acumen including accurate cost control, efficient procurement, production of timely valuations, pricing of variations and compensation events.

Experience of Construction (Design & Management) Regulations and the preparation of quality plans and safe systems of work.

A motivated, driven, and flexible approach comes naturally to you.

About you

The successful candidate will have excellent influencing and interpersonal skills, with the ability to problem-solve and high attention to detail, consultative approach to their work. Organisational and time management skills are also required along with a full driving licence.

Job Description:

The newly created role of Grower Manager will deliver the diverse growing requirements of the commercial crops, overseeing all growing functions, and contributing to the cost-effective supply of product to a professional standard. The total growing area is a mix of covered and uncovered, heated and unheated environments in excess of 14 acres, producing 1.1 million pots per year with a turnover of £3.2 million. The approximate number of people reporting to the Grower Manager is 7, made of up Growers and Trainee Growers.

Main Duties:

-Effectively managing growing teams, systems, and resources to produce crops of optimal quality at the right time, by specifying, monitoring and giving technical guidance

-Carrying out regular crop walks to identify cultural requirements and monitor pest and disease

-Ensuring all growing environments are effectively controlled and crops manipulated to ensure sales timings and targets are achieved, and waste percentages reduced

-Continually improving the efficiency of the growing processes and labour efficiency

-Liaising with internal departments to ensure facilities and equipment are in good working order, and pests and diseases are identified and dealt with at the earliest opportunity

-Using horticultural production software to input data and reference production plans

-Participating in Strategic Projects, Working Groups and Committees

-Chairing weekly Grower Meetings

-Participating in the weekend duty rota

-Line managing staff, taking responsibility for yearly appraisals, training needs and disciplinary matters

Candidates must have a number of years growing experience in container grown ornamental horticulture; will preferably hold a qualification in commercial Horticulture to a minimum of Level 3, or equivalent; will have excellent attention to detail; be good leaders and motivators of people in order to build strong teams.

The position is full time, averaging a minimum of 41 hours per week across the year. 31 days holiday per year pro rata, inclusive of Bank Holidays.

Head Gardener

A highly experienced Head Gardener with an accredited horticultural qualification (Level 3 or above) is sought to play a leading role on a stunning and historic 200-acre private estate in Ascot, Berkshire. 

This position would suit a proactive, committed, and hands-on Head Gardener who has demonstrable experience of working within a large estate team. Expertise in garden design, woodland management, project procurement, safe working practices, and garden machinery and licensing are essential.

The Head Gardener will lead and manage a committed team of 10, to ensure that the gardens and wider estate are maintained to the highest possible standards. The ability to motivate and support the development of the existing team is highly desirable. Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Head Gardener will be required to manage external contractors and to work alongside landscape architects where necessary. As Head Gardener you will oversee the garden budget, maintenance schedules, and seasonal planting plans.

The Head Gardener will be expected to brief the principal on garden projects on a regular basis, so discretion and good communication skills are necessary.

The estate encompasses approximately 60-acres of Grade I listed gardens, grass tennis courts, an outdoor swimming pool, rose garden, potager, large greenhouse and woodland glade. In addition to the main estate, the Head Gardener will also be responsible for overseeing the management of small ornamental gardens at the Principal’s London townhouse.

The Head Gardener will be joining the Estate at an exciting time, as they will have the opportunity to play a key role in the development and implementation of a garden legacy project. This is a rare opportunity for a talented gardener to take a significant step in their career and to utilise their varied skillset.

Candidates must have proven management experience, preferably working in both a private and public garden, and hold a full UK driving licence.

Working Hours are Monday to Friday, 7:00am–5:00pm. Some Saturdays and Bank Holidays required during busy periods.

A competitive salary is provided at £48,000 per annum, with a salary review after successful completion of the probation which is 6 months. 2 bonuses would also be given each year, one in January and one in July and this will be depending on performance. Head Gardener

An incredible opportunity has become available for an experienced and knowledgeable Head Gardener to manage the horticultural features in the gardens and ground of a beautiful estate near Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire. The position is full time and permanent basis and will manage a team of 5 gardeners and groundpeople.

The majority of the 550-acre estate is grazed with about 50 acres surrounding the main house require the attention of the Head Gardener and their team. The gardens and pleasure grounds consist of a formal terrace with formal parterres, extensive lawns, mature trees including copper beech trees, oak, yews and cedars, ornamental shrubs, and woodland area. There is a walled kitchen garden, that is currently used for ornamental purposes and has the potential to be restored for productive purposes as well. There are two greenhouses onsite used for propagation and growing vegetables. The gardens also include fishponds, water features, swimming pool and tennis court.

The Head Gardener will be responsible for the maintenance of the gardens and all horticultural tasks on the Estate to a professional standard. He / She will plan the planting programmes to provide seasonal interest within the borders, and prepare annual maintenance schedules for the borders, trees and lawns and will liaise with the Principles and the Estate Manager on any changes to the planting schemes and planting of external pots and troughs throughout year. The health of plants in the extensive herbaceous beds are to be monitored and maintained including pruning, staking, feeding and spraying.  The successful candidate will schedule and supervise the necessary work for the team of gardeners and will work very closely with the Estate Manger to achieve this.

The Head gardener will be on call once a month on a Sunday to assist with any matters on the Estate and provide any assistance to the principles. Additional responsibilities include assisting with water duties during the summer months including weekends.

Applicants should ideally have experience as a Head gardener or experienced gardener working on a private estate, managing a small team. He / She will have excellent plant knowledge and excellent technical skills.  It is important that the Head Gardener has a good understanding of Health and Safety requirements noting that all duties must be carried out to comply with current Health & Safety at Work legislation. Any defects or Health and Safety concerns, no matter what its nature are to be reported to the Estate Manager immediately. The Head Gardener will have experience using and maintaining a range of basic garden machinery.  A UK driving licence is essential.

A courtyard house is provided as accommodation for the successful applicant. Council tax and utility bills are paid by the employer. The house is fully furnished and can be kept that way if required by the tenants or can be emptied out if the tenant wishes to bring their own furniture. Partners, children and pets are welcome.

Deputy Head Gardener

Applications are invited for the position of Deputy Head Gardener for the gardens of a family-owned estate in East Sussex.

The Estate comprises of stunning woodlands and extensive pasture stretching over 500 acres. The family’s vision is to achieve an estate that is highly sustainable, supports a rich array of biodiversity along with recreational enjoyment for the family and its guests.

In the immediate vicinity of the Manor House there are over 15 acres of private gardens containing formal areas, lawns, two lakes, a river, orchard, kitchen garden as well as other self-contained gardens.  It is a primary aim for the gardens to be well kept and maintained to a high standard.  The family have a strong ecological approach to gardening promoting organic practices and maintaining natural and wild areas. 

The family have a desire to be involved and the Deputy Head Gardener will work closely with, and advise, them to bring their mutual vision to life.  The experienced gardener will also need to work under their own initiative to manage as well as bring in new ideas to revive the gardens.

Key responsibilities will include:
  • Maintenance and upkeep of all areas of the gardens
  • Maintenance and upkeep of compost/leaf mould/ soil conditions
  • Work closely with the owners to redesign and replant the gardens with the aim to encourage biodiversity
  • Overview and advice on planting and rotation of vegetable garden including use of companion planting
  • Managing and motivating a small horticultural team, delegating tasks where necessary

You will be responsible for the maintenance side of the company, working alongside the Director this varied role will involve coordinating the company’s ongoing & new maintenance contracts. The main responsibility would be to ensure that high-quality garden maintenance and soft landscaping is carried out and delivered to the client’s requirements. As well as undertaking large and small scale planting, turfing and plant procurement. This position will require candidates that have excellent organisation and client liaison skills.

- Up-to-date working knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in garden maintenance operations with a sound knowledge of horticultural practices (planting, pruning, fertilising, etc), growth characteristics and identification of a wide variety of plants.

- A confident managing staff able to provide a clear direction and inspire those around you, promptly and efficiently addressing personnel issues and training and development needs. Demonstrating a commitment to teamwork and create value not only for self but for others.

- Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment whilst maintaining a positive can-do attitude·

- Good at relationship-building with the management with a strong attention to detail

- Ability to be a problem solver, identify and resolve issues with efficiency and be focus on the overall objectives of the team to continuously improve ·

- Be results-focused, proactively delivering value that will directly lead to the achievement of business results

Personal Characteristics:

Candidates should be experienced and effective Garden Maintenance, with previous experience working on prestigious residential projects. You should have in-depth knowledge of completing reports and contracts as well as tender documents. You should have experience managing budgets and reporting to senior management. You will be able to effectively communicate on all levels and have good IT skills.
