Head Gardener

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Head Gardener to lead a small team on a beautiful and established private estate near Hungerford, West Berkshire. This role would suit a knowledgeable and hands on gardener with previous experience as a Head Gardener.

The estate covers approximately 72-acres in total, with 25-acres being dedicated to the garden to varying degrees of formality.  The highly maintained gardens comprise wide herbaceous and grass borders, herb gardens, a large kitchen garden and walled gardens, wider shrub and woodland planting around a lake, with extensive natural woodlands, natural swimming ponds and water meadows. 

The Head Gardener will lead a team of three including one full time and two part time gardeners, to maintain the newly established garden to a high horticultural standard as well as continue to enhance and carry out ongoing projects such as tree planting.  The role will hands on with the team and involve general garden maintenance such as mowing, hedge cutting, strimming, pruning etc. in addition to the maintenance of all plantings, weed control, staking/wire supports, assistance within the woodland areas, maintenance of all lawn areas, wildflower areas and water meadows, seasonal bulb and pot planting, seed collection and propagation, maintenance of all drives, paths, terrace and tracks, maintaining the irrigation system, mulching, maintenance of garden features e.g. water features, sculptures, seating, checking drains, the maintenance of equipment, composting of waste on site, assisting with  vegetable, fruit, nut and cut flower production in the kitchen garden, maintenance of a natural swimming pond as well as general estate maintenance where necessary.

Suitable candidates will ideally hold academic horticultural qualifications at RHS Level 2 or above/equivalent as well as a minimum of 3 years’ experience as a Head Gardener on private estates.  Applicants should have good horticultural knowledge as well as some experience in plant propagation and kitchen gardening.  Physical fitness is essential as is an ability to safely operate garden machinery.  Chainsaw and chemical spray certificates would be beneficial. 

This is an excellent opportunity to join an impressive private estate, and to work alongside a great team.  The role is available to either be live in or live out. If live out, the salary would be up to £45,000 depending on experience and applicants will ideally live within a reasonable commute of Inkpen, Hungerford. If live in, the salary would be £35,000 depending on experience and a two-bedroom cottage onsite provided rent free with council tax and bills e.g. water and electricity paid by the employer.

Head Gardener

An exciting new vacancy has become available for a Head Gardener to lead a small team of gardeners in the ongoing care of a beautiful, well renowned property and mature 12-acre garden in Gloucestershire. This position would suit a qualified and knowledgeable Head Gardener with excellent attention to detail and experience of supervising under gardeners.

The gardens are well established and varied. The main body of the garden consists of terraced lawns and mature trees with the local river running through the garden itself. The property has a large walled garden which is currently used to supply the house with good quality produce. The new Head Gardener will liaise directly with property owner, organising the work schedules for the garden, leading three further members of staff and contractors. Additional estate and household staff work and live on site. Ensuring that the gardens are managed and presented to an extremely high standard. The successful applicant will need to be committed, motivated, have an eye for detail and a desire to achieve high standards.  Applicants must possess good supervisory and communication skills as well as a positive attitude.  The owners are very much looking for hands-on candidates who are happy to lead by example and support existing staff.

What we need from you as a Horticulture Nursery Manager:
  • A minimum of 5 years production nursery experience, ideally in production for retail sales but not essential

  • You must work well on your own as well as managing a small but growing team – currently 1 supervisor, 4 nursery assistants, 2 apprentices and additional seasonal staff during busy periods
  • You must also understand the importance of plant health and quality ensuring we produce the finest retail plants with quality always being your top priority
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Knowledge of importing stock from abroad and the paperwork and checks required

What the role involves:

Key responsibilities:

Candidates will be working on exciting projects, ranging up to £150,000 in value with multiple projects running at any one time. Main tasks for the Landscape Manager will include but are not limited to:

  • Undertake site visits, surveys and meetings with clients as required to discuss projects.
  • Basic site surveys, review of drawings and any bills or quantities, then preparation of appropriate quotations.

Gardener/Caretaker

Based in a beautiful rural setting in Normandy, France, a hands-on Gardener/Caretaker is sought. The 1000-hectare estate offers pastures, woodlands, informal gardens, arboretum, a small lake and an orchard. The main house is a 300-year old chateau and there are a number of outbuildings, including a workshop, guest cottage, and a separate 3 bed, 2 reception room house that comes with the position.  Roughly 9 hectares are maintained formally, with the rest comprising woodlands and pastures, some of which are let out.  It is certified as an organic farm and there is a small flock of sheep, some chickens, and a vegetable garden.  Although the property is rural, there is a town of 25,000 population 10 km away, and the coastal beaches are a short 30 min drive away.  This is a secondary family residence for our London-based client, who travel regularly to the property for school holidays and longer periods over the summer. 

Our client is seeking a live-in Gardener / Caretaker for a full time, permanent position.  The family is actively involved with the management of the property and is in direct communication at least weekly to discuss ongoing activity at the property.  They are a relaxed and understated family, with three school-aged children.

The position is the only employed member of staff on the property, although there are regular tradespeople to the property, including regular cleaning and upkeep of the interior of the chateau which is contracted out.  The role is ideal for someone who is hands on, multi-skilled from gardening to equipment maintenance to working with animals and is self-motivated.  It offers the scope to create and execute new projects, and the owners are very open to taking the property in a direction that aligns with the skills and interests of the caretaker.

The position is open to an individual or ideally, a couple.  Work should be locally part or full time for the non-employed partner, or of course this would be perfect for someone who’s partner works remotely or who stays at home with young children.

The main responsibilities of the Gardener /Caretaker role but not limited to, is to carry out garden maintenance duties, to include mowing, pruning, cutting, strimming, weeding, hoeing, raking, etc. as well as weekly, strimming and clearing of approx. 9 hectare park. Maintain and prune hedges. Planting out the summer and winter flower beds and planters Care as well as the maintenance of extensive rose garden. Clean and maintain koi pond. Tend to fruit trees in the orchard and plan, plant, and maintain organic vegetable garden, the propagation of seedlings and plants. Maintenance of woodlands including selected clearing of fallen trees and re-plantings.

The caretaker responsibilities are to keep the owners apprised of any minor or major damage and wear and tear to buildings and property, and either carry out or arrange and supervise repairs. Carry out repairs to fences and gates, keeping outside areas clean and tidy, including outbuilding. Weeding of pathways, replacement of light bulbs in internal and external lamps and supplying the main house with firewood. There will be occasional painting and basic carpentry, plumbing, and electrictics works required. Previous experience of maintaining the upkeep of tractor, chainsaws, strimmer, and other garden machinery and equipment is desirable. As there is livestock on the estate there will be the requirement to feed the animals (currently sheep, chickens, but may consider a few cows). Ensuring the security and the occasional errands into nearby village for supplies and picking up of guests will also be required.

Management of external contractors will be an additional feature of this position and therefore previous experience in doing so will be advantageous for prospective candidates. Applicants should be physically fit and with a ‘can do’ attitude. A self-motivated individual/s with a strong work ethic, ability to work to their own initiative and willingness to work to consistently high standards are qualities which are essential for this role.

The successful candidate will possess the following skills:

Will have experience in a similar position a good knowledge of horticulture, gardening and landscaping; horticultural qualifications a plus a basic knowledge of farming and agriculture, with organics a plus. Excellent attention to detail and take pride in their work. Additionally speak fluent English; some spoken French is required, to at least a basic conversational level and have a European passport or residency.

Terms of Employment:

  • Hours: 39 per week  
  • Occasional overtime when required (with sufficient notice)
  • Guaranteed days off:   Generally approx. 30 min of animal care on weekends / day, otherwise free

Our client is an award-winning Landscape company who specialise in all forms of landscaping, external works and natural & synthetic sports facilities. Traditionally dealing with Local Authorities, Royal Parks, Government Agencies, Sports Clubs, Consultants, Architects and Construction Companies, completing contracts from £100K to £5 million+

Currently work is secured via select lists, reputation, their marketing division and through a trading history that has been built up over 30 years.

Due to their continued growth, they are seeking a Contracts Manager with previous experience in managing and delivering commercial landscape projects, on time, to specification and producing the budgeted margin. Contracts in London and South East, ranging in value between £100K to £4.5 Million.

The Role:

  • Completion of contracts on time and to specification.
  • Ensuring gross margins are maintained on contracts.
  • Management of sub-contractors and direct labour.
  • Procurement and management of resources (plant, equipment and materials).
  • Delivering contracts in line with Health, Safety, Quality and Environmental standards.
  • Production and ongoing development of Construction Phase Plans
  • Production and management of programmes of work.
  • Maintaining site records.
  • Effective client/ project team communication and relationship building.
  • Proactive approach to contract delivery, highlighting any potential problems and proposing solutions.
  • Production and presentation of monthly progress reports
  • Production and submission of monthly valuations
  • Project reviews at the end of each project.

What We Are Looking For:

Proven track record within the construction/landscaping industry, be commercially minded and adept at managing site managers and subcontractors.

Full UK Driver’s License

Project Management qualification (Preferred)

SMSTS (Preferred)
