The threats from pests and diseases are a major concern to the UK, and to the nation’s gardeners in particular. Plant health in gardens is one of the four themes in the Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) science strategy (https://www.rhs.org.uk/science/pdf/rhs-science-strategy-2015-2019) and the Society had recently reviewed its plant health policies and procedures. As part of the review the RHS has decided to significantly invest in this area including funding the position of Plant Reception Coordinator.
This role will develop, implement and oversee a programme of activities to improve plant health practice in the RHS, and to provide authoritative and up-to-date advice and information to RHS members and the general public.
Depending on the knowledge, skills and experience recruitment will either be at the Scientist or Senior Scientist grade. A degree in a relevant biological subject, plus a higher degree or horticultural experience is required. Knowledge of horticultural practices, plant pest and disease diagnosis and management, and plant health regulation and certification is required. The successful candidate will have the ability to communicate to scientists and the public, and will be able to work effectively as part of a team and using their own initiative.

An experienced multi-skilled estate gardener is required to maintain and develop a beautiful private garden near Guildford in Surrey, on behalf of a welcoming and appreciative family. Applications are sought from qualified professionals with experience of managing private estate gardens autonomously, to a high standard. The ideal candidate will be academically qualified to Level 2 (or above) with at least five years’ experience of managing private estate gardens as a Sole or Skilled Gardener and/or equivalent relevant experience. Applicants should be physically fit hands-on gardeners with experience of managing small garden budgets and their own time efficiently. Competence in the operation and basic maintenance of a wide range of garden machinery is essential, as is good plant knowledge and that of seasonal garden management. Applicants should have experience with plant propagation, correct species-specific pruning techniques (wisteria, roses, young trees etc.), identification and treatment of plant pests and diseases, lawn care (scarifying, aerating, seeding, weed/feed application etc.), as well as an ability and willingness to carry out other associated estate duties as they arise. Spray certificates (PA1/6) Chainsaw license (CS30/31) are desirable but not essential. The Sole Gardener will be responsible for ensuring the security arrangements for garden buildings and stores are observed at all times.
Candidates with an open, positive approach to estate gardening are sought, as there will be some additional, relatively infrequent duties required of the successful candidate to ensure the smooth running of the estate. Such duties may include preparing the garden/grounds for spring and winter, i.e. storage and treatment of garden furniture and equipment, the moving of furniture for events as necessary, basic maintenance/cleaning of guttering, outdoor buildings, lighting etc., restocking of the log store and baskets in the house when necessary, taking out bins for collection, visits to the local refuse centre when required. The Sole Gardener will also be responsible for basic regular pool maintenance, i.e. checking the ph. levels, backwashing etc. The successful applicants will need to be comfortable around the family dog and be willing to help with hens. Candidates must be willing and able to source contractors on an ad-hoc basis, when necessary, for projects such as larger clearances, tree work, larger fencing projects, water storage systems etc. The property owner will work directly with the successful candidate with a view to purchasing additional tools and machinery that is deemed necessary to fulfil the job role efficiently.

The Landscape Leader will carry out tasks associated with creating garden improvements.
Main Duties
The main duty will be to complete garden works according to the allocated budgets, to required finishes and to achieve customer satisfaction. To manage assistants/contractors, to make best use of time and materials and other resources. Protect and promote the assets of the Company. The work is to make decisions about how and when work is carried out, who will do it and how. This is a working foreman role. You need to know what to do, be able to direct and motivate others while doing your own work and confident to manage the ordering of materials. Tools and vehicle will be provided. You need to be able to make good judgements about the factors that influence the success of the work. (weather, skills, time, customer expectations, professional standards)
Role and Responsibilities
- Mark out, dig and prepare bases for paving and driveways in compacted type one or concrete. Lay paving, blocks and stone using mortar. Build walls, free standing and retaining. Brick and block/render.
- Set out and erect fencing, fix trellis, build pergolas, build sheds, fix edging, lay decking.
- To identify and use tools appropriate to the task, direct other operatives in their duties. Undertake to use PPE at all times when carrying out any hazardous activities. Prepare a risk assessment of any activities which are deemed to be hazardous and present to the Proprietor.
- Ensure all operatives keep the site clean and tidy, control the use of materials and their storage to ensure the efficiency of the work operations and the safety of anyone in the work area.
- Be the person responsible for health and safety, first aid and recording accidents.
- Fill out a time record for each contract. Record any and all materials that were used in any contract as recorded in the contract document. Compile other operatives’ timesheets into the contract record.
- Fill out a personal timesheet daily with details of operations undertaken, location, materials used and total time.
- To oversee ordering and delivery of materials, check for damage, unload with due care, check all items correspond with paperwork, identify a suitable safe and secure storage area. Inform the proprietor of any anomaly. Check stocks of materials are sufficient for any given contract and ensure work does not stop from lack of materials.
- Advise the proprietor if there is a need to vary the contract. If the customer requests to change the scope of the work, to add more work or if he believes there is a need to vary the agreed work.
- Other actions that will be required: Setting out, operating tools, counting, measuring, digging, cutting, nailing, fixing, laying, building, rendering, erecting, planting, levelling, drainage and any other task that may be required in the renovation, or creation of landscape elements. All finishes shall be to recognised standards and specifications.
Measurables (KPI)

Team supervision | Ensure team are on site on time, breaks are monitored, uniform and PPE are worn correctly and site is left in a good state each day in a safe and secure location. |

Rationale:
The Landscape Supervisor provides on the ground management and support to the team leaders within their region and gives direct management support to the Contracts Manager.
The role is a mix of on the ground hands on leadership and mobile site level management. The Supervisor must be competent in communicating both verbally and in writing with our client’s site management and our own in house administrative support. A strong knowledge of good landscape practice will be essential, preferably supported by a qualification or a willingness to obtain one.
As the “right hand man” to the areas Contracts Manager you will be expected to oversee the more complicated projects and/or a number of projects at a time including attending H&S and production meetings with the on site management, troubleshooting and assisting the manager with general tasks such as take-off’s, site measures and client liaison.
This Role will also require you to physically work on sites as requested and lead teams to achieve deadlines and quality standards.
In short this an intermediate Management role between the Contracts Manager and the other team leaders within the region.

- Demonstrate a high level of detail and motivation with a strong work ethic and ability to work well as part of a team.
Applicants must possess the following:
- Basic horticultural knowledge including the ability to visually identify weeds.
- Excellent practical skills in all areas of garden maintenance including the use of petrol-powered garden machinery.
- Good physical fitness and an ability to follow instruction where necessary.
- A CSCS Card and PA1/PA6 spraying licence are desirable, though training can be provided if necessary.
