Sole Gardener
An enthusiastic and hands-on Sole Gardener is required on a full time and permanent basis to maintain and develop the gardens of a beautiful private Estate situated near Weybridge, Surrey. The property is set within approximately 4 acres and includes various formal lawns, mixed herbaceous planting, formally clipped yew and Buxus, wildflower area, pleached hedging, small vegetable garden, greenhouse, several espalier trained fruit trees and wall trained roses.
The gardens also contain a swimming pool and tennis court which are generally maintained by contractors. This is a sole gardener position; however, the successful candidate will be required to manage additional contractors when required. Although this garden is established there is plenty of opportunity for the new sole gardener to make an impression as the owners are open to new ideas with regards to its development.
The Sole Gardener will have a hands-on role in the daily care and continuous development of the garden. They will be confident planning and executing the seasonal maintenance of the gardens. The ideal candidate will have an academic horticultural qualification and at least 5 years’ experience working on a private estate. He / She will be able to identify a wide range of plants, pests and diseases, soil conditions, together with knowledge of their requirements to thrive. Ideally candidates will have experience maintaining herbaceous borders, topiary, and wildflower meadows. The successful candidate must be enthusiastic, physically fit, and confident working autonomously.
This is an excellent opportunity and would suit someone with a vision for maintaining and enhancing the garden as required. There is a wide range of garden machinery available for use and the gardener will have the ability to operate and carry out basic maintenance of the garden machinery. Generally, the gardens are maintained without the need for pesticides however, PA1 & PA6 qualifications would be useful for the control of weeds on the hard surfaces.

An excellent opportunity has arisen on a private estate in Surrey, for an Assistant Gardener to focus on the general maintenance aspects of the 12-acre garden, under the direction of a very talented and knowledgeable Head Gardener. This role would suit a physically fit and experienced gardener with excellent attention to detail and a desire to take on a full-time permanent role on a stunning private estate. There is scope for modernising and developing the garden, therefore candidates with thoughts and ideas with regards to improving the garden are welcome.
The mature 12-acre private garden is situated approximately 1.5 miles from Haslemere train station and comprises expansive lawns, mixed herbaceous and shrub borders, a natural pond and associated planting, a collection of rhododendrons, azalea, and camellia. Also, within the historic garden is a mature pinetum with an impressive selection of native and exotic trees including conifers, sequoias, mature pines and much more. A truly impressive collection of trees with at least 20 champion trees which are recognised by The Tree Register. The gardens also once featured 1920’s Gertrude Jekyll rock garden and hot border, of which the backbone of the original design still remains. Surrounding the house is a variety of grasses with mixed herbaceous. They are trying to modernise the area around the house going down to the existing garden to blend in with the existing mature garden. There is also a greenhouse which is used for propagating when required and storing plants for container displays.
Applicants for this position should be able to demonstrate experience and competence in garden maintenance tasks such as hedge cutting, lawn care/mowing, weed control, basic pruning techniques, and the safe operation of a range of garden tools and machinery. Spray certificates (PA1/PA6) and chainsaw certificates are desirable but are not essential. The successful applicant will report to the Head Gardener and will complete the small team of three, currently comprising the Head Gardener and one Assistant Gardener.
Applicants for this position should have experience in each of the above areas and must be flexible and helpful in their approach to private estate gardening. The grounds and gardens contain steep terrain; therefore candidates must be physically fit and happy to work outside in all weathers. Working hours are Monday to Friday, 08:00 – 17:00 with a 1-hour lunch break and additional morning break. The position is offered with 20-days holiday per annum plus Bank Holidays. Candidates must live within commuting distance of the property as accommodation is not provided.

This role sits within the Forest Research Technical Services Unit (TSU) which provides a capacity to conduct field work across Great Britain. Through a network of field stations and two nursery facilities which work in close co-operation, the TSU provides a wide range of specialist technical skills and knowledge to support the work of the science centres within Forest Research and on behalf of other customers, Forestry Commission, Forestry and Land Scotland, Natural Resources Wales and other external clients.
TSU also provides local contact and liaison between Forest Research (FR) and networks of regional Forestry Commission (FC) and Natural Resources Wales (NRW) staff, partner organisations and private woodland owners and managers.
Job description
The Technical Services Unit at Alice Holt’s Research Station are looking to appoint a nursery manager on a three-year fixed term appointment. The purpose of the job is to take the lead in the management and development of high-quality FR nursery facilities at Alice Holt which consist of an intensive nursery facility at the Research Station and a nearby extensive outdoor facility at Headley. There may also be occasional opportunities to assist with TSU fieldwork. Liaising with FR project leaders, the nursery manager will deliver the nursery services required to underpin their research projects as well as identifying opportunities for development of future nursery work. The successful candidate’s key work areas will be:
Managing the nursery facilities:
- Manage agreed budgeted work programmes, occasional staff members and growth facilities to provide a high-quality horticultural service that meets the needs of our clients
- Oversee the maintenance of the site, identifying seasonal work required
- Achieve efficient use of nursery resources in all areas of work through planning and efficient management balancing quality and cost effectiveness
- Care for the plants in the nursery, carrying out watering, weeding and pest control as required
- Propagate or source plants required for research projects
- Ensure that work complies with FR’s health and safety, quality assurance (QA) and ISO14001 environmental management standards
Developing future nursery capacity:
- In collaboration with FR project leaders, you will seek to develop new work utilising the nursery facilities and identify potential new equipment / infrastructure / skills required to support this
- With TSU management and colleagues in FR facilities, prepare business cases for new investment
- Assist with the delivery of any agreed investment plans
Building capability in the nursery team:
- Share your horticultural skills and experience with members of the TSU team based at Alice Holt so that they can assist with nursery work where necessary; either during peaks of workload, weekend cover or periods of leave / sickness absence
- Identify development/ training opportunities for staff working in the nursery
The post requires attention to detail, good record keeping and flexibility in terms of working hours and weekend working as required to care for the plants growing within the nurseries.

Essential Criteria
Horticultural qualification to a minimum of HNC level or equivalent experience
- Demonstrable experience of plant propagation, care and maintenance work
- Demonstrable experience of managing glass houses and polytunnel structures including environmental control and irrigation systems
- Demonstrable experience of working safely whilst undertaking horticultural work including competent use of risk assessments and COSHH assessments
- Literacy Level 2 qualification or equivalent experience (e.g. GCSE, NVQ, Key Skills, Welsh Baccalaureate Intermediate, Scottish National Certificate level 5)*
- Numeracy Level 2 qualification or equivalent experience (e.g. GCSE, NVQ, Key Skills, Welsh Baccalaureate Intermediate, Scottish National Certificate level 5)*

The Managing Director will be responsible for driving the business into a period of new growth and opportunity. Reporting to the CEO, the Managing Director will deliver against agreed KPI’s, targets and objectives for the company and will be responsible for continuing the growth of a high performing management team. Responsibilities include five direct reports (two contract managers, finance manager, a business support manager, and an accounts clerk) with a total of 40 staff members overall.
You will have strong leadership attributes coupled with demonstrable management and people skills that have been used extensively in senior management roles in a soft services multi-site environment. Previous experience at director level is highly desirable.
The Managing Director will be a relationship builder of the highest calibre, both with suppliers, customers and internal teams and will have proven negotiation, presentation and communication skills utilised to Board level.
Key responsibilities:
- Provide effective leadership and direction for the management team and to oversee the day to day running of the business.
- Enhance and upscale current customer relationship systems to provide a best in business offering.
- Responsible for creating and maintaining an effective team culture, including through periods of change and to build and maintain a strong team ethos.
- Identify and prioritise bid opportunities with the CEO.
- Be able to contribute to effective bid writing, resulting in successful business.
- Ensure the Company’s financial and service delivery goals are met through effective planning, organisation and use of key resources.
- Accountable for all aspects of the business operational performance, service management, productivity and people related measures.
- To deliver a programme of ongoing process efficiency and productivity.
- To set and monitor objectives and performance targets for the team.
- Manage P & L, budgets and report to the Board on a monthly basis.
- Develop and monitor key business metrics to ensure targets are met.
- Provide leadership and vision to the organisation by assisting the owners with the development of short and long term plans.
- Recruitment of senior staff as required and identification of staff development training.
- Annual appraisals for direct reports.
- Review and update company policy documentation.

Our client is an independent landscaping company which offers unparalleled design, installation, and maintenance to commercial properties. With over 40 years’ experience within the commercial sector, BALI award winning and recognised for their outstanding value and quality. Providing landscaping services to high end sites in London and the South East of England, with clients including business parks, urban civic spaces, office estates, hotels, restaurants, retail parks and hospitals. They are now looking to recruit a Landscape Gardener for a static site based in Surrey since taking over the site in September 2021. The site holds huge potential, and this is an excellent opportunity for someone to be part of the development of the grounds. Covering approximately 40 acres the site includes manicured gardens, protected ancient woodland walks, and expansive lawns; with plenty more plans for the grounds in the pipeline.
Main Responsibilities
As a Landscape Gardener on this stunning site, the successful candidate will play a key role as a member of the landscaping team on the maintenance of all landscape and infrastructure. Playing an important part of the development and ongoing maintenance of the site.
Main duties will include:
- Reporting to the Landscape Manager you will maintain and prepare all horticultural and ecological areas as directed, assisting in all forms of landscaping
- Landscape maintenance including weeding, trimming, edging, pruning, planting, watering, lawn care
- Operating a wide range of garden tools and machinery and be responsible for the care and day to day cleaning of the equipment
- Responding to clients and members of the public on site in a polite, courteous and professional manner
- Work both in a team and on own with minimal supervision to consistently deliver objectives, carrying out work in a timely manner
- Display a wide range of horticultural skills and practices.
Key Skills:
The successful candidate will have excellent horticultural knowledge with a recognised horticultural qualification being highly desirable, as well as a chainsaw certificate being desirable. A minimum of 2 years’ experience in the horticultural sector with plenty of hands-on experience, as well as a good understanding a wide variety of landscape strategies and knowledge of plants, along with interest in sustainability and biodiversity.
Also essential for the role are:
- Hands on landscaping experience of planting out, pruning and lawn edging
- Experience with use of a wide range of garden tools and machinery
- A demonstratable ability to establish and sustain a good working relationship within a team, as well as holding the initiative to work alone.
- Desire to learn new skills, working chemical free to produce sustainable landscapes.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Full UK drivers’ licence, preferable with legal and practical ability to use a trailer
This is a full time, permanent role. Working days are Monday to Friday (7am – 3.30pm).
