Job Brief

The company are setting up new teams to match their rapidly growing client base in assisting all manners of gardening and horticultural services. They are in search of a Gardening Team Leader to take day to day responsibility for supervising another team member and play a part in a wider team, working for both commercial and domestic customers will involve managing standards, planning maintenance and works for their own given sites, supervising work, ensuring all provided tools / machinery and equipment is regularly maintained and fit for use, providing on-site training when necessary and be able to adapt to a wide variety of work and site requirements maintaining a level of pride in their achievements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Planning works for your dedicated sites and making sure you have adequate resources to complete specific tasks.
  • Ensuring work is completed safely, to a high standard, and within agreed time frames.
  • Ensure all equipment and machinery is well maintained and in good working order.
  • Provide training to team members as and when required.
  • To establish and maintain good working relationships with customers is key.
Candidate Skills

This is a hands-on role, and it is important therefore that candidates should have good technical and practical skills in grounds and garden maintenance including: mowing, strimming, hedge cutting, general garden clearance, pruning, planting/ plant knowledge, bed preparation etc. Able to manage large site requirements in terms of work carried out and customer facing,

Applicants must be hardworking and reliable, have good leadership, problem solving and communication skills, and must have the ability to plan and organize work making the most effective use of resources.  A full UK driving license is essential, and a horticultural qualification Level 2 or above highly desirable.

Monday to Friday 07: 15- 17:00

Estate Worker

A rare and exciting opportunity has become available for an Estate Worker to join an incredible private estate that is going through a monumental restoration of the buildings, gardens and grounds. The position is a full time and permanent role and is based in Surrey.

The 500-acre grounds are entirely new, based loosely on the historic gardens that were lost in the 1960’s. The grounds have been designed to consist of garden areas, a few of those areas are as follows; Forecourt with formal parterre planting beds with hedges and a topiary yew centrepiece surrounded by close cut formal lawns. These beds are intended to have a changing display of bulbs and annual flowering plants to provide year-round interest. The grotto entrance will be surrounded by coniferous trees planted to create woodland clump when viewed from the park. Shrub and herbaceous planting above the grotto to frame the sculpture/urn here. The garden walk will be an elegant repeat of shrub and herbaceous ground including planting around the outsides of the garden terrace. The Southern walk becomes part of the Garden terrace with a seat looking back towards the south wing.

The Kitchen Terrace and Pool Terrace planting will be in entirely in large timber planters. Small clipped standard trees surrounded with seasonal annuals. Both terraces will have the same layout, but the Pool terrace is in the shade of the house for much of the day whereas the Kitchen Terrace is mostly in full sunlight. The walled garden will be divided into a quartered layout with a gravel paths on the cross axis and around the perimeter walls. The central area will be a simple meadow and fruit trees with feature arbours in each quadrant. A new glasshouse will be built to accommodate house plants, seedlings and tender plants. The glasshouse backs onto the potting sheds. A working area with compost/ bulk materials storage ‘bins’ will be created and fruit cages and large areas of growing beds for cut flowers and vegetables. Other areas include the summer garden, spring and autumn woodland garden, lake walk with several planting areas on the terraces sloping down to lake, cascade steps, Japanese garden and arboretum woodland.

Applicants for this position will be required to possess previous professional experience in farm/estate work.  Suitable candidates will preferably have participated in a minimum of two harvest seasons working on a tractor and must have experience using ride on mowers and agricultural tractors. This role will involve general garden maintenance and extensive mowing and bailing of areas such as wildflower meadows. Applicants must be physically fit and must be competent in the operation and basic maintenance of a full range of garden machinery, although any required training can be provided by the client. In addition, previous experience and certification for chainsaws are non-essential but advantageous for this position as there is the potential for forestry work.  

The position is a 5-day working week but may vary when family are in residence or through busy periods, a watering rota for weekends is in place. The salary provided is up to £30,000 with accommodation. The accommodation provided is a two-bedroom house which is in a beautiful location onsite with council tax, internet, water and electricity bills paid by the employer. The property has recently been refurbished and comes fully furnished.

The successful candidate will be fully responsible for the estate’s lawn care, which equates to approximately 40% of the extensive grounds. You will be reporting into the head gardener and join him along with one other team member as custodians of the grounds, working as part of the small gardening and maintenance team ensuring the lawns are kept to the highest standards throughout the seasons, aligning with the estate owner’s requirements.

It will be the responsibility of the gardener / groundskeeper to ensure all turf care is maintained and well kept, including mowing lawns, treating, feeding, fertilising and when necessary, assisting the rest of the team with their duties. Both formal lawns are fully irrigated thus an understanding and knowledge of the maintenance and operation of irrigation systems would be beneficial. Duties will vary naturally throughout the seasons and will include leaf collection and clearing snow. Other responsibilities may include planting, watering, transplanting, controlling diseases, insects, and weeds.

The ideal candidate will have had experience in all aspects of lawncare; could be from or working within a greenkeeping environment; a non-smoker with a keen eye for details, meticulous in the maintenance of high standards, taking pride in their work, reliable and able to work with complete discretion.

Job Description:

An exciting opportunity has become available for a skilled, hard landscaper with previous foreman experience to lead a team and complete high-end landscaping projects in the Surrey area and occasionally London. The successful candidate will have a minimum of 10 years of experience in hard landscaping and be fully qualified and experienced in paving, fencing, brick / blockwork, timber decking, composite decking, turfing and planting.

Key Skills:

Senior Gardener

A self-motivated and driven Senior Gardener is sought after on a full time and permanent basis to maintain the gardens to a high standard throughout the year, as well as helping to shape the future of the gardens as part of long-term planning. The formal gardens are about 2 acres in size which includes a wild pond plus wildflower meadows that extend beyond the garden.

The successful candidate will be hands-on, passionate about maintaining very high standards, happy to work autonomously and plan your own work, whilst meeting the client's expectations. You will oversee a no-dig approach to the management of the garden with a keen focus on sustainability, conservation and organic gardening. Responsibilities will include ensuring that all formal borders, shrub beds and lawn areas are kept to a high standard, oversee the management and seasonal maintenance of the vegetable garden as well as general grounds maintenance including planting, pruning, weeding, strimming, clearing leaves, and watering. As well as ensuring pots and window boxes are watered, fed, clean and well presented.

The Senior gardener will occasionally be required to assist at the principal’s other property in London from time to time. Overall additional duties may also include caring for the house plants, ensuring they are watered, deadheaded, clean and well presented. Compost bay management and mulching maintenance as well as create budgets and place orders for tools, plant, and other necessary equipment. A good understanding of Health and Safety is important to comply with health and safety legislation and safe working practices.  

Applicants will have Horticulture Level 2, or 5 years working in a horticultural environment coupled with sound knowledge of standard horticultural practices (planting, pruning, fertilising, etc.), growth characteristics and identification of a wide variety of plants as well as good practical skills in soft landscaping and grounds maintenance. A practical knowledge of indoor plants and their presentation as well as pond maintenance would be an advantage. The gardener will be physically fit, have excellent organisational and prioritisation skills as well as good written and verbal communication skills. Experience with a range of machinery skills including use of strimmers, leaf blowers, mowers and tractors etc. is required. A driving licence is essential.

The garden contains expansive lawns, lavish herbaceous borders are complimented by a wildflower garden, roses and a series of mixed beds and borders, kitchen garden with a fruit cage, a small orchard, and a swimming pool which is managed separately.

The garden is part of a wider estate of 600 acres. The Sole Gardener will join a team of 3 working on the estate. The owner is passionate about her garden and enjoys working with the gardener on ideas and plans for the garden. The Sole Gardener will have a hands-on role in the daily care and continuous development of the garden. They will be someone who takes pride in their work and will maintain the garden to an excellent horticultural standard. Occasional weekend work in the summer may be required for watering. Additional duties include feeding the 4 – 6 chickens and occasionally walking their three Labradors when the owners are away. This responsibility is split between the team.

The ideal candidate will have an academic horticultural qualification and experience working on a private estate. He / She will be able to identify a wide range of plants, pests and diseases, together with knowledge of their requirements to thrive. Experience maintaining herbaceous borders, shrubs and kitchen gardening is required. The successful candidate must be enthusiastic, physically fit and confident working autonomously. PA1 and PA6 chemical application for pest & disease as well as CS30 and CS31 chainsaw certificates are desirable however training can be provided. A full driving licence is essential.

This is an excellent opportunity and would suit someone with a vision for maintaining and enhancing the garden as required. There is a wide range of garden machinery available for use and the gardener will have the ability to operate and carry out basic maintenance of the garden machinery.

A cottage is provided rent free with the position should the successful candidate require. The property is 3 bedrooms and council tax will be covered by the employer whilst all other bills will be the responsibility of the tenant. Partners, children and pets are welcome.

SALARY:        Circa £30,000 depending on experience plus accommodation
