Would you like to use your passion and creativity to nurture the grounds at our largest CWGC cemetery in the UK?  Then join us as a GC1 Gardener at our Brookwood Military Cemetery in Woking, which covers around 37 acres and commemorates over 5,000 identified casualties.

We are currently recruiting for a gardener to join a small team carrying out manual horticultural maintenance and renovation work.  You will also be required to work on other sites within the South East Region, from time to time, which may require occasional overnight stays.

This is a practical role, requiring maintenance craft skills to undertake a wide range of duties. These include turf culture, headstone border maintenance and planting, pest control, machinery operation and maintenance, tree care, and the care of ornamental features to the standards of excellence as set by the Commission.

You will need NVQ Level 2 or an equivalent level qualification in Amenity Horticulture and a full manual car driving licence. Candidates with relevant experience will also be considered.

Requirements for this role:

A full car driving licence, and the ability to travel to work on other sites throughout the region, with occasional overnight stays
a commitment to excellence in service delivery
effective communication and listening skills
good computer literacy skills or the ability to learn quickly
ability to work alone and using own initiative, as well as part of a team
PA1 and PA6 certificates would also be desirable, but training can be provided

Candidates must be physically fit with good time management, attention to detail and flexibility in their approach to the job.  As a natural problem solver, you should have a variety of DIY skills acquired through previous professional experience, ideally within a high net worth private estate environment. You will be hands –on, working alongside your team and ensuring that the gardens are constantly delighting customers and providing the Grand formal setting for our Palace customers and an exceptional venue for the outdoor events using this area.

You will also be hands-on and responsible for your team’s health & safety, staff development, work scheduling and the security of all equipment while at the same time having one eye on anything else going on in the East Gardens. Floral bedding designs, maintaining team records and communicating through the internet will also be an important part of your role so IT skills will be needed.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

As directed by the Head Gardener;

  • To manage, care and maintain the flower and shrub borders including weeding, pruning, spraying, planting, digging, splitting and general tidying.
  • To maintain the vegetable and cut flower gardens, sowing, planting, spraying and weeding. To supply the House with vegetables and flowers as required.
  • To maintain greenhouse plants by sowing, pricking out, potting up, taking cuttings, watering, spraying and cleaning pots.
  • To carry out general tidying duties around the garden and house including sweeping paths and paving, removing algae as required.
  • To use power tools and vehicles such as tractors safely and as instructed by the Head Gardener.
  •  To assist as required with additional duties such as furniture moving and rubbish removal in the house.
  • To come in at weekends on a rota basis (one weekend in five), to water greenhouse plants and tidy up as required for which time off in lieu will be given.
  • To assist in supervising trainees and volunteers on day to day activities as required by the Head Gardener.
  • To work safely at all times following Health & Safety and COSHH Regulations.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential

  • Relevant qualification e.g. NVQ or RHS in horticulture
  • Practical gardening experience

Desirable

  • Driving licence or experience of motorised machinery
  • Qualified for using pesticides e.g. PA1/PA6 Use of pesticides
  • Chainsaw qualification CS30 & CS30.1

Critical Challenges

To maintain the gardens to the highest standards, working around the performance schedules during the Festival and Tour to ensure all outdoor work is completed before the audience arrive.

Hours of work

The contractual hours of work are 40 per week, 7:00 - 15:30 with half an hour lunch, Monday - Friday. You will also be required to work weekends on a rota basis (one weekend in five),  for which time off in lieu will be given.

Rate of Pay & Benefits

The rate of pay is £9.44 per hour. In addition, we offer 5.6 weeks’ holiday inclusive of bank holidays per annum pro rata.
