Estate Grounds Person (Live out) - EC4182
A rare and attractive opportunity has arisen for an experienced Grounds Person to join a close and friendly team on a large private shooting estate in Winchester. The role would suit a practical and multi-skilled person with good time management abilities, the capacity to take direction, and the desire to take on a varied role. This is a genuine ‘lifestyle’ job opportunity and a chance to secure a job for life for the right candidate.
The large country estate comprises of formal gardens and surrounding arable farmland, the latter playing host to sheep and Alpaca on a year-round basis. The gardens in include cut flowers, a kitchen garden, glasshouses, beds/borders, lawns and hedges, and are maintained by a small gardening team. The house managers will require additional help from the new Grounds Person on a year-round basis.
As a key holder, the successful applicant will play an important part in the day-to-day smooth running of the estate; meter readings, cleaning, pool maintenance, firewood preparation, basic electrical and plumbing tasks, power washing, basic garden maintenance (under direction of the Head Gardener) and ensuring cleanliness and technical functionality throughout the estate in general. The focus of your duties may alter slightly with the seasons, though your primary estate maintenance responsibilities will remain consistent. Applicants with building maintenance experience are encouraged to apply.
Candidates must be physically fit with good time management, attention to detail and flexibility in their approach to the job. As a natural problem solver, you should have a variety of DIY skills acquired through previous professional experience, ideally within a high net worth private estate environment. Continued professional development will always be offered to employees, funded by the estate.
It is important that applicants are able and willing to take direction as instruction may be given by the house managers at any time. Historic Royal Palaces is looking for an experienced, qualified and visitor focused Gardens team leader to supervise an experienced team in maintaining and developing the important Fountain Garden section within the Historic landscape around Hampton Court Palace.
Fine lawns, Herbaceous borders and floral bedding are the key elements of this garden, all of which are maintained to high standards. Using modern machinery combined with traditional garden methods and forward planning is how we achieve our objectives and maintain the gardens reputation.
You will be hands –on, working alongside your team and ensuring that the gardens are constantly delighting customers and providing the Grand formal setting for our Palace customers and an exceptional venue for the outdoor events using this area.
You will also be hands-on and responsible for your team’s health & safety, staff development, work scheduling and the security of all equipment while at the same time having one eye on anything else going on in the East Gardens. Floral bedding designs, maintaining team records and communicating through the internet will also be an important part of your role so IT skills will be needed.
We will expect you to have formal horticultural qualifications to level III and proven experience in managing a team. A full driving licence, leadership training and PA1:PA6 certification would also be advantageous.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities
As directed by the Head Gardener;
- To manage, care and maintain the flower and shrub borders including weeding, pruning, spraying, planting, digging, splitting and general tidying.
- To maintain the vegetable and cut flower gardens, sowing, planting, spraying and weeding. To supply the House with vegetables and flowers as required.
- To maintain greenhouse plants by sowing, pricking out, potting up, taking cuttings, watering, spraying and cleaning pots.
- To carry out general tidying duties around the garden and house including sweeping paths and paving, removing algae as required.
- To use power tools and vehicles such as tractors safely and as instructed by the Head Gardener.
- To assist as required with additional duties such as furniture moving and rubbish removal in the house.
- To come in at weekends on a rota basis (one weekend in five), to water greenhouse plants and tidy up as required for which time off in lieu will be given.
- To assist in supervising trainees and volunteers on day to day activities as required by the Head Gardener.
- To work safely at all times following Health & Safety and COSHH Regulations.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Essential
- Relevant qualification e.g. NVQ or RHS in horticulture
- Practical gardening experience
Desirable
- Driving licence or experience of motorised machinery
- Qualified for using pesticides e.g. PA1/PA6 Use of pesticides
- Chainsaw qualification CS30 & CS30.1
Critical Challenges
To maintain the gardens to the highest standards, working around the performance schedules during the Festival and Tour to ensure all outdoor work is completed before the audience arrive.
Hours of work
The contractual hours of work are 40 per week, 7:00 - 15:30 with half an hour lunch, Monday - Friday. You will also be required to work weekends on a rota basis (one weekend in five), for which time off in lieu will be given.
Rate of Pay & Benefits
The rate of pay is £9.44 per hour. In addition, we offer 5.6 weeks’ holiday inclusive of bank holidays per annum pro rata.
