The successful candidate will need to have at least 8 years experience and be proficient in all hard landscaping disciplines required for high end gardens, including setting out from plans, laying natural stone and porcelain paving, drainage, brickwork, timber-work, walling, as well as the ground works required.

The right candidate must be able to work independently on larger projects but also experienced in running smaller jobs. After a successful trial period, a company van will be provided.

You would also need the following.

Competence in digger driving.A keen eye for detail.Strong communication skills with customers and team.The ability to self-motivate and the desire to work within a team.Strong literacy and numeracy skills.You will also need to demonstrate very high standards of workmanship.A full driving licence is essential

Hours Average - Mon - Fri 8am -5pm

Job Description:

Contract Deliverables

The main roles of the job:

1.       Carry out maintenance tasks and upkeep of a wide range of green areas and growing spaces, including the use of powered, non-powered tools & equipment, the application of pesticides / herbicides in line with good operational practice

2.       Liaise with clients and provide excellent customer service

3.       Produce competitive estimates and quotations for landscape and garden maintenance work

4.       Look for all opportunities to expand the client portfolio and up-sell within existing contracts

5.       Maintain accurate records

6.       Set an excellent example, supervise and deliver on-the-job coaching for Apprentice gardeners and work experience trainees to develop their horticultural skills and knowledge

7.       Review and provide feedback on the performance of jr staff and work experience trainees

8.       Attend team and supervision meetings as requested

9.       Ensure that all vehicles, machinery, tools and equipment are kept clean, safe, safe, secure and in a serviceable condition at all times

10.   Provide tool box talks to the relevant personnel

11.   Be responsible for the maintenance of personal health and safety and development of best practice, as well as that of our clients and fellow staff, as required by law

12.   Work as part of the CL team and carry out cover for other staff as and when required

13.   Undertake any other duties and training that may reasonably be required by Cultivate London

Personal Specification


1.       A passion for gardening and plants, and strong knowledge of both

2.       Proven experience of landscaping and horticultural work with a sound knowledge of horticultural procedures and processes

3.       The ability to carry out a full range of horticultural operations to a high standard across various sites

4.       A horticultural qualification at Level 3 or above and or significant gardening experience

5.       CSCS (supervisor level) & SSSTs qualified

6.       An ability to produce, read and accurately interpret planting plans and garden design instructions

7.       Demonstrable knowledge of workplace health, safety and welfare practice and requirements

8.       Full clean UK driving licence

9.       Ability to work effectively as part of the CL team and on your own

10.   Supervisory and management skills and experience with an ability to supervise and coach inexperienced team member

11.   Willingness to work outside of normal working hours including weekends, as agreed in advance with CL

Harris Gardens is an entrepreneurial garden maintenance company based in and around Tunbridge Wells. As we continue to grow, we are looking for a Lead Gardener to join our team, working on a variety of gardens within a 20-mile radius of Tunbridge Wells.

We are a team of 10 Gardeners and two Administrators. Our Gardeners work in teams of two, so a Lead is responsible for ensuring the team is where it needs to be with the right equipment. Liaising with customers during visits to get the best out of their gardens is an important part of a Lead Gardener’s role, providing opportunities for ‘ownership’ of some beautiful gardens where the possibilities for horticultural development and planting are endless.

Maintenance tasks will include, but not be limited to: lawn care; bed work & pruning; mulching and hedge cutting. We avoid pesticide use wherever possible and within our team have broad experience of different methods, allowing our gardeners the flexibility to try new things and develop their own skills and experience, according to their horticultural slants.

As well as regular maintenance work, we are often called upon to create and execute planting plans for new and existing clients, so good plant knowledge and plant design principles are beneficial.

Good communication and management skills are required as you would be 'leading' an Assistant Gardener on a day-to-day basis to ensure our high standards are adhered to and our customers are happy. Our specialist arborists take care of 1,600 trees found in the Parks, plus the rest of the University’s stock dotted around the city – over 3,500 trees in total. 

We offer a full, horticultural, landscaping and arboricultural service to the wider University and Oxford colleges.

-Contribute to the development of the University Parks and the wider Functional Estate.

We are seeking a gardener/grounds maintenance operative to help our teams manage an interesting and varied range of outdoor areas.  The sites range from housing estates to country estates, and include some office areas and private homes.

Applications are invited from suitably experienced candidates with a horticultural qualification, who have good general knowledge of plants and ground care. Experience operating large garden machinery is essential and PA1/PA6 and chainsaw certificates are a distinct advantage.

The successful candidate will be a hands-on Gardener or Groundsperson with experience of working independently and the ability to manage a busy workload with minimal supervision as well as part of a team.

Reporting to the Head Groundsman, duties will include the maintenance of large lawn areas, car parks, flowers and flowerbeds, weed and pest control, seasonal pruning/hedge cutting, shrub maintenance, and any other related duties as required.
