Fixed term contract, 26 March - 28 September 2018

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

As directed by the Head Gardener;

  • To manage, care and maintain the flower and shrub borders including weeding, pruning, spraying, planting, digging, splitting and general tidying.
  • To maintain the vegetable and cut flower gardens, sowing, planting, spraying and weeding. To supply the House with vegetables and flowers as required.
  • To maintain greenhouse plants by sowing, pricking out, potting up, taking cuttings, watering, spraying and cleaning pots.
  • To carry out general tidying duties around the garden and house including sweeping paths and paving, removing algae as required.
  • To use power tools and vehicles such as tractors safely and as instructed by the Head Gardener.
  •  To assist as required with additional duties such as furniture moving and rubbish removal in the house.
  • To come in at weekends on a rota basis (one weekend in five), to water greenhouse plants and tidy up as required for which time off in lieu will be given.
  • To assist in supervising trainees and volunteers on day to day activities as required by the Head Gardener.
  • To work safely at all times following Health & Safety and COSHH Regulations.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential

  • Relevant qualification e.g. NVQ or RHS in horticulture
  • Practical gardening experience

Desirable

  • Driving licence or experience of motorised machinery
  • Qualified for using pesticides e.g. PA1/PA6 Use of pesticides
  • Chainsaw qualification CS30 & CS30.1

Critical Challenges

To maintain the gardens to the highest standards, working around the performance schedules during the Festival and Tour to ensure all outdoor work is completed before the audience arrive.

Hours of work

The contractual hours of work are 40 per week, 7:00 - 15:30 with half an hour lunch, Monday - Friday. You will also be required to work weekends on a rota basis (one weekend in five),  for which time off in lieu will be given.

Rate of Pay & Benefits

The rate of pay is £9.44 per hour. In addition, we offer 5.6 weeks’ holiday inclusive of bank holidays per annum pro rata.

Gardener/Groundsman - EC3393

An enthusiastic person is required to join a team of gardeners managing a large garden (10 acres) in Berkshire. Good experience of lawn and grass care is essential as the main responsibility of this role will be lawn and grass maintenance, as well as care for an area of woodland that has a river running through it. A chainsaw licence would be beneficial, and experience with a wide range of gardening machinery essential (certificates an advantage); as is an ability to maintain and keep the garden machinery serviceable.

The estate has a warm and welcoming environment therefore applicants must have a friendly and flexible approach to work with willingness to work hard and be an integral part of a small friendly team. The residence is a secondary home and can be very busy during the summer; therefore you will be expected to work longer hours with time off in lieu during the quieter periods. Experience of working in an Estate environment type setting would also be useful.

You need to be somebody who is happy to work outdoors all year round in a garden where flexibility and a common-sense approach to work are required. Candidates should be willing and able to undertake the general garden handyman duties as required, and be prepared to assist the Estate Manager with other estate tasks when required.

Experienced Gardening Couple - Live In - EC3384

A large private estate situated between Reading and Newbury requires an enthusiastic and experienced Gardening couple to work alongside a garden designer. The 10 acre gardens comprise sizeable flower beds, small vegetable garden, greenhouse, large areas of lawns, woodland and river frontage. The traditional English country garden property is undergoing the redesign of some elements of the garden, therefore candidates should be willing to work enthusiastically alongside the owner and designer to implement and care for new planting.

One of the couple should be confident in taking on the responsibility of team leader with overall charge of day to day organisation of the garden. It is expected they will have good plant knowledge, all round horticultural skills and ability to work with/lead a small team of Gardeners.

It would be preferable, but not essential, for applicants to have a recognised horticultural qualification and experience working in a large private garden of a similar nature. Applicants should hold PA1/PA6 spray tickets; however these may be gained at a later date. A chainsaw licence would be beneficial, and experience with a wide range of gardening machinery essential.  Blaklader gardening clothing is also provided for staff as part of their staff uniform.
