Skilled Gardener

Skilled Gardener Required.

Job Ref: EC13957

An opportunity has arisen for a Skilled Gardener to play a key role in the ongoing development and maintenance of a private estate near Stoke Poges, on an initial basis of approximately 2-days per week.  This opportunity is open to self-employed gardeners who can demonstrate a thorough understanding of horticulture with excellent plant identification and ornamental plant management skills.

The stunning Georgian property encompasses 19-acres overall and includes a formal garden of approximately 4-acres.  The main house and garden are currently undergoing renovation and redevelopment respectively, with garden designer Justin Spink managing the latter.  In its present form, the impressive and diverse garden is being managed by a local contracting company insofar as general maintenance.  There is a need for additional input, primarily within the walled garden from a finer horticultural perspective in order to ensure existing plantings and those to be implemented in the near future are managed to correct horticultural standards.

The wider property includes (and will include in the near future) a wild flower meadow, a lake and wetland area, specimen trees, terraces and walkways, a large swimming pool, tennis court, expansive areas of formal and informal lawn as well as ornamental planting throughout.  As the main focus of the role at this phase of the design implementation, the existing walled garden comprises climbers such as roses and clematis (with additional planting and training to be carried out), several mixed deep borders with herbaceous and perennial planting (including giant perennial species), specimen trees, fine mown paths, ornamental grasses, with a swimming pool, raised terrace and pagoda to be added as part of the new design.  Management and development of the walled garden area will be the primary role of the successful candidate though their experience and knowledge will be utilised in the surrounding garden areas where possible and required.

Suitable candidates for this position are likely to currently be self-employed horticulturists with an academic horticultural qualification and/or extensive gardening experience.  Applicants must possess practical knowledge of a wide range of plants, good physical fitness, an ability to safely operate general garden machinery and must have a thorough understanding of seasonal garden management.  Spray certificates (PA1/PA6) would be beneficial and a driving licence essential due to the rural location of the property.

This is an excellent opportunity for a local freelance gardener to become involved with a garden at an early stage of redevelopment.  A generous hourly rate is offered in line with experience, with the number of days per week and working hours to be agreed following discussion on site.  This is expected to initially comprise two-days per week on an 8hr per day basis.

Sole Gardener - EC10782

A genuine lifestyle job opportunity has arisen on a stunning 70-acre estate near Newbury in Berkshire.  This position will suit an academically qualified and experienced horticulturist with proven hands-on garden management experience and a desire to join a new garden at an exciting phase of development.  This Sole Gardener role is offered with a two-bedroom cottage on site with its own garden, in addition to a generous salary.

The formal one-acre garden is in the process of being designed by a renowned garden designer and is due for the first phase of implementation in spring/summer 2020.

In a formal to natural contrast, the new design will encompass the immediate area around the main house and will graduate outwards towards 70-acres of farmland via garden rooms containing new and existing trees, lawns/grassland, streams and a one-acre lake.  The diversity of planting and complexity of garden management will therefore be greatest in the area surrounding the house, with the further reaching areas requiring little more than maintenance and monitoring.  Upon completion, the garden will comprise a greenhouse and kitchen garden, and orchard, swimming pool, terraces, with wildflower two-acres of meadows and lakeside planting.   Additional aspects will include cloud Buxus, pleached trees, yew hedges, fruit trees, hedges of English lavender, sculpture(s), climbing roses, a croquet lawn and wildlife pond.

The ideal candidate will be a positive, knowledgeable and helpful person with a thorough grasp of horticulture and good physical fitness.  The property owner is actively looking to create a happy environment for all which will provide reward and a sense of belonging for all involved with the estate.  Applicants should hold academic horticultural qualifications and/or extensive experience on private estate from a garden management perspective.  Knowledge and experience in each of the above garden areas is required, as is an ability to monitor and maintain other areas of the estate, i.e. the lake and boundaries.  A flexible and friendly gardener is sought, as there may be a requirement to undertake rare ‘emergency’ school runs, i.e. once every 8-weeks, as well as basic pool maintenance etc.

There is a focus on ecologically sensitive garden management/development and a general interest in nature on the property.  Suitable candidates will therefore have a genuine interest in this area and be willing to pass on their knowledge where the opportunity arises.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced and enthusiastic gardener to join a welcoming private estate on a full-time live-in basis, and to be involved in the implementation of the stunning new design from the beginning.  The position is offered exclusively as a live-in, as the client would like the successful applicant to be able to keep an eye on the property in their absence.  The two-bedroom property comes with Council tax and rent paid by the employer, with utility bills remaining the responsibility of the occupant.  A full driving licence, criminal background check and references will be asked of each applicant.

Sole Gardener - Live In - EC6366

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a skilled Sole Gardener with a genuine talent and passion for kitchen gardening.  Though still in the design and build phase, this new project is being managed on behalf of a well-known author and TV presenter by the celebrated garden designer, Justin Spink.  This private home will, upon completion, be a beautiful synergy of form and function as well as a unique and rewarding place of work for the successful candidate.

The estate comprises 50-acres of paddocks and woodland in addition to the main dwelling and associated gardens.  The property is nestled among mature trees in a rural location, approximately 15-miles of north-east of Basingstoke.

With the project now in full flow, a skilled Sole Gardener is required to join the estate in order to familiarise themselves with the site, the plans and the eventual responsibilities of the role.  The successful candidate will initially manage areas outside of the formal garden, such as the surrounding paddocks and woodland, and will play a primary role in the management of the formal gardens thereafter.

The new design is focussed on the kitchen garden, as this will form the primary theme of the property.  The gardens will be an area for entertainment as well as for private enjoyment and professional development, and as such, the ornamental/non-produce aspect will also be a significant factor in the overall feel of the finished product.

The new design comprises sweeping hedges of native species, with existing and new trees providing perspective and scale throughout the property.  Spring bulbs will emerge in view to visitors along the driveway, with mixed fruit, native broadleaf and oriental flowering trees shadowing mown paths and bulb meadow areas.  The main courtyard will provide teasing glimpses of the garden, itself leading to a private terrace with sculptures, lavender and clipped rosemary on one side, with open grass areas with mature and newly-planted trees on the other.

Mown paths run through stunning bulb meadow areas between the house and formal garden areas and lead the eye to wrought iron gates; the entrance to the walled kitchen garden and primary entertainment/eating area.  The variety, quality and combination of crop species affirm the fact that this area is the heart and soul of the property.  Raised oak beds containing herbs and salad crops surround a timber pergola, holding trained vines over a formal seating and entertainment area.  Adjacent to the vine-laden pergola, lawns provide outside space for guests to stand and enjoy the unique environment from which ingredients in their recent meal had been grown.  A greenhouse, potting shed and fruit cages sit among beds of cutting flowers and sweet peas on the south-facing wall, with the view through a picket gate in the wall expanding to a carpet of wild flowers.

Applicants for this attractive role must be very experienced and competent in kitchen gardens, primarily, as well as being knowledgeable horticulturists.  An academic horticultural qualification at RHS level 3 or above is desired, with at least 5 years’ experience hands-on experience on private estates at sole, skilled and/or senior level essential.  Applicants with competence in chainsaw operation as well as a wide variety of garden machinery are encouraged to apply, as management of the surrounding paddocks and woodland will necessitate such skills.  The working week is expected to require three days’ worth of kitchen gardening, with the remaining time being divided between the wider estate and ornamental aspects of the garden.

This position is offered with accommodation off-site, which will be arranged according to applicants’ specific situations and requirements.  In addition to the provided accommodation, a generous salary is offered, with guaranteed workplace satisfaction and a stunning environment in which to work.

Head Gardener - Live Out - EC5599 - this position has been filled

An enthusiastic and hands-on Head Gardener is required to take the leading role at my client’s beautiful family home in Newbury, West Berkshire.  This interesting and varied position involves the management of the historic property, itself comprising 23 acres including 3-acres of garden, 4-acres of woodland and 16-acres of paddocks.

The gardens are made up of several rooms containing large herbaceous borders, many varieties of roses (including wall-trained climbing roses), extensive lawns, terraces with container planting, a croquet lawn, ornamental planting, mature trees throughout (cedar, beech, chestnut and impressive lime avenues) and areas of managed woodland.  The less formal areas of the garden, including the hedgerows and woodland, are being developed specifically to encourage wildlife.  Amenities include an En Tout Cas tennis court and a saltwater swimming pool.  The property does not have a kitchen garden and there is no requirement for plant propagation work.  The surrounding paddocks are managed by a local farmer, and the hedges managed by local tree surgeons.

This is an opportunity to work with the owners and the existing team on the continued development of the gardens and grounds on a permanent basis.  You must have an ability to lead by example.   As a member of the team, you will also be expected to assist with ad-hoc estate duties such as recycling, stocking the house with logs for the fire, basic swimming pool maintenance/monitoring when in use, feeding the hens, and other similar tasks as and when they arise.  This is a family home with a friendly team of staff, so applicants must possess a positive can-do attitude at all times and the desire to settle into a genuinely enjoyable role on a long-term basis.

As a suitable applicant, you will need strong plant knowledge and experience in the operation and basic maintenance of a full range of garden machinery.  A good level of physical fitness is essential.  You will be responsible for managing one full-time gardener, two part-time helping hands, as well as external contractors where necessary.  Academic horticultural qualifications would be beneficial but not necessarily essential if extensive relevant experience can be demonstrated.  Spraying certificates (PA1/PA6) and a certificate of chainsaw competence are desired, as is experience in a similar garden management role within a private home.  You must be an enthusiastic gardener with an ability and willingness to disseminate your knowledge to members of the small and enthusiastic garden team.

Although a live-out position, a recently refurbished gardener’s cottage with excellent facilities is provided for use during breaks and lunchtimes.  A full driving licence and your own transport are required due to the rural location of the property.
