Set within 80-acres, the private estate is surrounded by 10-acres of formal gardens which comprises of newly planted herbaceous borders including many decorative pots and containers with seasonal plantings. The grounds also feature a productive orchard, conservatory, a newly restored kitchen garden with large, heated greenhouse, cutting garden and wildflower meadows.

The successful applicant will have a hands-on and varied role in the daily care of the garden and woodlands which run along the property borders. Tasks will include but are not limited to the management of herbaceous borders with shrubs as well as a greenhouse, potting shed and conservatory work. The successful candidate will work closely with and under the guidance of the Head Gardener as well as with the small, dedicated estate team. This position offers an excellent opportunity for the right candidate to further develop their plant knowledge and gardening skills.

The successful candidate should have a deep passion for horticulture, taking great pride in maintaining and presenting the gardens to an exceptional standard and have good plant identification skills, excellent attention to detail and a methodological approach to their work.

The client is looking for applicants who are on a more junior level or those who are at the beginning of their horticultural career. Applicants must demonstrate enthusiasm and a willingness to learn alongside a positive attitude and flexible approach.

Head Gardener

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced and dedicated Head Gardener at an historic 300-acre private estate in Ascot, Berkshire. This position would suit a self-motivated and passionate horticulturalist who is looking for a challenging and rewarding role within a highly professional estate team.

The estate consists of 60 acres of formal gardens, which includes a potager, rose garden, grass tennis courts, outdoor swimming pool, large Victorian glasshouse and cutting garden. In addition, the estate also includes a large woodland, horse paddocks, wildflower meadow and lakes. You will also be responsible for the management of the principal’s townhouse garden in Belgravia, London. 

Working under the direction of the Estate Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing garden maintenance, project management, garden administration and providing clear direction and guidance to a team of 13 gardeners on a day-to-day basis.

The Head Gardener will have full oversight of garden improvements and seasonal maintenance including the research and procurement of plants and materials for all areas of the estate, project planning and implementation in consultation with the Estate Manager, coordination with the household team on internal floral displays and plant maintenance and the development of the annual garden budget in consultation with the estate accounts team. Duties also include oversight of H&S management and best practices coordination with the estate team, staff management – weekly team rotas/meetings, staff training and team supervision and consultation with external partners and specialist consultants. The successful applicant will be responsible for providing client briefings and garden updates.

Applicants will ideally have 7-10 years’ experience within a senior position at a private estate or public garden. Comprehensive plant knowledge and woodland management experience is essential as well as relevant horticultural qualifications and experience. The successful applicant will have operational knowledge, experience of garden machinery and intermediate level IT skills. A full UK Driving Licence is a requirement.

Our client seeks an experienced gardener to help maintain the gardens on a year-round basis following the annual calendar. The Senior Gardener will oversee and work alongside a live in Groundsperson to care for the garden with great attention to detail. Applicants will ideally possess an academic horticultural qualification, such as an RHS level 2 or equivalent, combined with extensive experience working in a similar role within a private estate setting. The focus of this role is fine horticulture, so excellent plant identification skills are essential in addition to a thorough understanding of the seasons. Duties include rotate crops, cultivate, harvest and prune fruit and vegetables within the kitchen garden and greenhouse, general garden maintenance such as lawncare, hedge cutting, leaf collecting, weeding, moss control, manage fruit trees including species specific pruning and general health, pest and disease control, tending to herbaceous borders and further developing the composting system. A self-motivated, organised individual with a self-start attitude and proven track record of managing a large mature English country garden, with a strong work ethic and willingness to work to consistently high standards are qualities which are essential for this role. Applicants for this role must be physically fit, hands-on, and happy to work outside in all weathers. 

Experience in the use and basic maintenance of a wide variety of garden machinery is a must, which include ride on mowers, strimmers, pedestrian mowers, hedge trimmers and more. Additional ad hoc tasks may occur and will include but are not limited to basic maintenance both inside and outside the main property and other buildings on the estate. Other tasks may include gutter clearing, cleaning internal windows valeting estate cars, chauffeuring and other such tasks.

The client is happy to offer the successful application a large and refurbished 2-bedroom Coach House which is located on site, with utilities and council tax to be covered by the Senior Gardener. The owners are happy to welcome partners, preferably no pets although they would consider a dog; unfortunately, the property is not suitable for dependants.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Head Gardener to join work closely with a highly experienced Head Gardener on a beautiful and established private estate near Hungerford, West Berkshire.  This role is full time and permanent and would suit a skilled and academically qualified gardener with a desire to be part of a small team working on an incredible and diverse garden.

The estate covers approximately 72-acres in total, with 25-acres being dedicated to the garden to varying degrees of formality.  The garden is kept to a high horticultural standard and comprises of large formal areas closer to the property, a large walled garden, new Alitex glasshouse, with vegetables, fruit and herbaceous and grass borders. A large lake with extensive natural woodlands, natural swimming ponds and water meadows. 

Working alongside the Head Gardener, the successful candidate will carry out high level maintenance of the outdoor areas.  The role will also involve general garden maintenance such as mowing, hedge cutting, strimming, pruning etc. in addition to the maintenance of all plantings, weed control, staking/wire supports, assistance within the woodland areas, maintenance of all lawn areas, wildflower areas and water meadows, seasonal bulb and pot planting, seed collection and propagation, maintenance of all drives, paths, terrace and tracks, maintaining the irrigation system, mulching, maintenance of garden features e.g. water features, sculptures, seating, checking drains, the maintenance of equipment, composting of waste on site, assisting with  vegetable, fruit, nut and cut flower production in the kitchen garden, maintenance of a natural swimming pond as well as general estate maintenance where necessary.

Suitable candidates will ideally hold academic horticultural qualifications at RHS Level 2 or above/equivalent as well as experience as a Skilled Gardener on private estates.  Applicants should have good horticultural knowledge as well as some experience in plant propagation and kitchen gardening.  Physical fitness is essential as is an ability to safely operate garden machinery.  Chainsaw and chemical spray certificates would be beneficial.

A unique and incredible opportunity has become available for a Senior Gardener to work with a world renown garden designer, Piet Oudolf, installing some ground-breaking designs within a sixty-acre garden.  This vacancy would suit an enthusiastic and experienced horticulturalist with energy and the kind of attention to detail that takes the good and makes it great!

The successful candidate will join a growing estate team at a senior level and will be responsible for managing and maintaining the modern gardens to a high horticultural standard. The 60 acres surrounding property is effectively gardens, parkland with expansive grass areas area and includes pathways through and around the vineyard within the grounds, 3 large ponds currently being landscaped and a stream. There is also a formal outdoor swimming pool and a natural bathing pool containing aquatic plants and water lilies.

The gardens contain Piet Oudolf new perennial beds and borders, a formal Hornbeam walk with Beech hedges beneath it to be kept well clipped, free standing specimen seasonal flowering trees and shrubs, climbing roses, small natural woodland area and flowering meadows in the fields. There is no kitchen garden but plans for fruit trees to be planted. There are several plans for the garden, future projects and ongoing development such as working with the James Hitchmough developing the Wetland meadow from seed with young plants being added this Spring- Summer. A collection of specimens Taxodium disticum is to be planted this autumn along with other trees.

The Senior Gardener will be expected to liaise directly with the owners, plan at least 12 months ahead to prepare for all eventualities in the garden and suggest seasonal and long-term planting and maintenance strategies. This will include all routine work as well as project work, developments, enhancements and implementations.  In addition, they will be planning for new planting, bulb planting and displays, propagation of plants for re-stocking, ordering of materials such as mulch at the appropriate time for use in the garden. The Senior Gardener will plan ahead to ensure continuity of supplies and purchase supplies as required. They will also be assessing the abilities of all contractors/ team members and allocating work in the appropriate manner providing a work schedule.

Applicants are expected to have experience working on private estate garden, have extensive horticultural knowledge and / or a horticultural qualification.  They will ideally hold tickets such as Spray certificates and chainsaw as well as ideally have relevant licences for the use of large garden machinery (tractors, lawnmowers, strimmer’s, chain saws, hedge cutters, etc.). All equipment is to be kept in a clean and safe operating condition.

Prospective candidates are required to be excellent cultivators, have experience in all aspects of the horticultural year and be able to communicate well.  They will need to be able to co-ordinate and develop all other areas of the property as required. The role would suit a team player who also has the genuine passion to lead a team to create a well maintained, beautiful estate. More importantly, however, he/she must have a strong desire to move up into a Head Gardener vacancy. Having a "can do" attitude is imperative.

Head Gardener

A highly experienced Head Gardener with an accredited horticultural qualification (Level 3 or above) is sought to play a leading role on a stunning and historic 200-acre private estate in Ascot, Berkshire. 

This position would suit a proactive, committed, and hands-on Head Gardener who has demonstrable experience of working within a large estate team. Expertise in garden design, woodland management, project procurement, safe working practices, and garden machinery and licensing are essential.

The Head Gardener will lead and manage a committed team of 10, to ensure that the gardens and wider estate are maintained to the highest possible standards. The ability to motivate and support the development of the existing team is highly desirable. Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Head Gardener will be required to manage external contractors and to work alongside landscape architects where necessary. As Head Gardener you will oversee the garden budget, maintenance schedules, and seasonal planting plans.

The Head Gardener will be expected to brief the principal on garden projects on a regular basis, so discretion and good communication skills are necessary.

The estate encompasses approximately 60-acres of Grade I listed gardens, grass tennis courts, an outdoor swimming pool, rose garden, potager, large greenhouse and woodland glade. In addition to the main estate, the Head Gardener will also be responsible for overseeing the management of small ornamental gardens at the Principal’s London townhouse.

The Head Gardener will be joining the Estate at an exciting time, as they will have the opportunity to play a key role in the development and implementation of a garden legacy project.
