The impressive eight-bedroom main house is framed by an NGS registered, former RHS garden of six acres.  The 300-year-old garden is currently managed by a full-time Skilled Gardener who will require assistance from time to time with basic tasks such as mowing and hedge cutting.  The remainder of the estate maintenance duties will consist of non-horticultural tasks, i.e. DIY/handyman jobs on and inside the property buildings, occasional chauffeuring and general care of seven chickens and three dogs on site. Good physical fitness, a positive attitude, energy and a strong work ethic are essential requirements for this role, as is a full driving licence.

Duties under the responsibility of the Housekeeper will consist of the upkeep of the main house by way of cleaning, laundry, weekly shopping and some preparation of food for one child.  The three dogs will require care which will be limited to feeding and opening the door to enable them to entertain themselves in the large garden when the property owners are away.  The position will be a Monday to Friday role with free weekends except on very rare occasions, as unforeseen circumstances inevitably arise.  A full driving licence is also essential for this role.

A two-bedroom cottage is provided with rent, Council tax, water, electricity etc. covered by the employer.  Bills such as phone and internet will be the responsibility of the successful candidates.  Candidates with experience and training in trades with good all-round DIY skills are particularly sought after, with competence in the garden maintenance aspect of the role remaining essential.  Housekeepers with experience on private estates and associated autonomous working will be most welcome.  Applicants must have an excellent command of spoken and written English, a natural ability to get on well with other staff and visitors and must be capable of working unsupervised and managing their own time.

My client is one of the fastest growing gardening companies in the UK with an award-winning website and catalogue, and a passion for product and service.  An exciting new role has arisen for a Horticultural Buying Assistant to work under the Senior Buyer within the small close-knit team on a full-time permanent basis.  The position will focus on buying for Seeds, Cut Flower Bouquets and House Plant Gifts ranges and to play a key role in the next phase of the company’s growth.

Reporting directly to the Senior Buyer, the role will involve administration associated with the department as well as the proactive management and implementation of company initiatives.  Typical duties include completing Buying Sheets each season, requesting quotes from suppliers and collating product information from suppliers, and preparing sheets for sign off by Senior Buyer.  The responsibility for checking invoices and credits each week against agreed cost prices will be fall within the post holder’s remit, as will the responsibility to resolve queries before passing to the accounts team.  The successful candidate will also assist with sourcing/resourcing top-up stock mid-season and completing report administration to enable seasonal reports to be produced.  

Record keeping of samples for trials will be the responsibility of the Horticultural Buying Assistant, along with the tracking of trial progress and recording results.  A log of anything flowering incorrectly will be kept and maintained by the post holder, with the communication of issues being reported to suppliers also being the responsibility of the Horticultural Buying Assistant.  The successful candidate will also be responsible for daily web checks associated with product presentation and information online and in keeping up with current market trends and competitor activity.  A library of competitors and supplier catalogues will also be the responsibility of the successful candidate to manage.

Suitable applicants will have a love of flowers and plants, though horticultural qualifications are not necessarily required. A wonderful opportunity for a skilled Sole Gardener has arisen at an impressive private garden near Stourhead, Wiltshire.  This property is owned by an artist with a genuine passion for their garden and the owner is looking to collaborate with an experienced gardener with a flair for design, on the continued development of the garden. 

Applicants for this position will ideally hold an academic horticultural qualification at RHS Level 3 or equivalent/above.  Hands-on garden management experience with a positive attitude is important as is the ability to plan and manage your own workload proactively.  The successful applicant will get a generous employment package, as detailed below.

The Grade 2 listed property has a 1.5-acre garden with views over the wider Stourhead Estate.  The garden comprises formal lawns (which are looked after by a specialist contractor), box and yew hedges/topiary, herbaceous borders and new perennial planting, a pergola and herb terrace, an orchard in a perennial meadow, a greenhouse and both formal and informal ponds.  The owner has created the garden from the ground up over the last 19-years, and there is ongoing development.  The ecological conversion of the orchard into a sustainable perennial meadow is an interesting project in which the Sole Gardener will play an important role.  The garden is currently open once a year under the NGS.   

Typical duties of the Sole Gardener will include all usual garden maintenance tasks as well as pest and disease management via organic means (whenever possible), the appropriate seasonal, species-specific pruning of shrubs and fruit trees, as well as clipping of topiary/hedging.  The gardener will be responsible for maintenance of all paths, terraces and garden features; e.g. ponds, the pergola and outdoor seating.  The gardener will be responsible for the supervision of the external lawn maintenance contractors.

Applicants will need to have a keen interest in colour sensitive planting and be willing to work with the owner in the continual development of planting designs, including seasonal bulbs and annuals.  Applicants should have excellent plant knowledge, including propagation, and good attention to detail.   As collaboration with the owner is important, at least a weekly meeting or email will be required of the successful applicant.

This role will be contracted to 35-hours per week.  The position is offered with a 10% pension contribution and a very generous 30-days holiday per annum, plus Bank Holidays (with holidays to be taken at times agreed with the owners).  A charming three-bedroom cottage with south-facing garden is provided rent-free, however Council Tax and utility bills are to be paid by the Sole Gardener.
