A fine private house based in Marlborough, Wiltshire with gardens and grounds of approximately 1 acre, is seeking a sole gardener to take ownership and manage the gardens. The garden contains extensive lawn with mature and young trees throughout the grounds, as well as wildflower meadows. The garden is an important part of the estate, so the owners are looking for an experienced gardener to work with them to continue to drive their garden forward and maintain it to a high horticultural standard. The opportunity exists to play a creative role in the development of garden areas, so applicants with a keen eye for plant use and development are encouraged to apply. The owners are keen for the successful applicant to establish a vegetable garden on site, as well as bring new ideas to the table when it comes to creating new elements of the garden.

Applicants will have a good understanding of the seasons, excellent horticultural knowledge, and must be willing and able to carry out all aspects of gardening including pruning, plant propagation, planting, weeding as well as the lawncare, leaf collection and other horticultural duties as they arise. The suitable applicant will ideally possess a minimum of 3 years’ professional gardening experience as well as a horticultural qualification; however, this is not a requirement. Senior Gardener

An exciting opportunity has become available for a self-motivated and driven Senior Gardener on an incredible estate near Marlborough in Wiltshire. The Senior Gardener will continue to develop, enhance, and maintain the stunning grounds and gardens, overseeing one other gardener as well as external contractors when required. The position is full time and on a permanent basis, with room for progression over time; accommodation is available for candidates who require it.

In the last 10 years the 25-acre site has been developed and now boasts many spectacular elements to the gardens and grounds. The site includes expansive formal lawns, a lake, herbaceous borders, a walled vegetable garden growing a wide range of produce. More recently an orchard has been planted in the grounds, situated alongside parkland and woodland.

The principal duties of the Senior Gardener will be to carry out hands-on, year-round maintenance of the garden, landscaped grounds and planted areas of the Estate. Candidates will be expected to be part of the wider estate team and to assist the employer generally in whatever way needed; liaising with colleagues, contractors, and any other part time workers involved in ongoing activities to ensure a high standard of presentation.

The senior gardener must have excellent plant knowledge as well as a genuine hunger and excitement for creating stunning and unique gardens. The successful applicant will work to a high horticultural standard to continue to improve the borders, keep the kitchen garden productive and maintain the greenhouse and the different areas of the garden. Candidates will have a strong knowledge or all forms of garden management, including identifying specific maintenance duties and developing annual management plans for the gardens and implementing these within an agreed budget.

Applicants should ideally have a minimum level 2 horticultural qualification combined with excellent plant and tree knowledge and previous experience working on private estates.  Experience growing fruit and vegetables as well as specialist pruning is required for the role. Senior Gardener

An incredible opportunity has arisen for an experienced senior gardener to rejuvenate and restore a prestigious listed garden around an important Grade 1 house near Salisbury, with the objective to bring it back to its former glory. The position is full time and permanent. 

The property is a large Georgian country house surrounded by a 3-acre formal garden that is part of a wider estate including listed parkland, paddocks, woodland, swimming pool and tennis court. The 19th century formal garden to the West was terraced by William Butterfield and features yew topiary, stone urns and steps, fine specimen trees, water features, and extensive lawns. To the East is a large lawn and attractive pastureland framed by mature trees. To the North and South the property is bordered by woodland. 

The owners recently purchased the property and are looking to carry out a complete restoration of the garden. The ideal candidate will have an eye for detail and a strong interest in getting involved in a rejuvenating and renewal project. He / She will be hands on, contribute towards the design of the garden and be responsible for the care and maintenance of the grounds to a high horticultural standard. Applications are invited for the position of Experienced Gardener for a large country property situated in rural Hampshire. The property is surrounded by fields and wooded area and has 4 acres of formal gardens.

The role of Senior Buyer involves working closely with the Buying Manager and Manager Director and will involve managing a Horticultural Buying Assistant.  Due to the small size of the team, applicants must be able and willing to undertake a range of duties such as the administration and processing associated with the primary role.  Crossover exists between categories, so a calm and considered approach is necessary as well as a positive character and an ability to apply initiative and attention to detail at all times.

The role will involve preparation for range reviews, including understanding analysis and trends, sourcing new products under the direction of the Buying Manager for Seeds, and the Managing Director for the House Plant Gifts ranges. 

Regular duties will include ensuring Buying Sheets are set up and completed ready for handover in line with the critical path, maintaining an awareness of competitor activity and market trends, ensuring sell prices are competitive and margins are in line with company targets and working closely with the merchandising team to ensure good stock availability.  The post holder will also work closely with the web marketing team to ensure products are merchandised effectively and accurately online.  Arranging and planning photoshoots for new House Plant Gift ranges will also be the responsibility of the successful applicant.  A proactive approach to developing strong relationships with key suppliers is an important part of the role. The successful candidate will be also be required to visit an associated company site at regular intervals to observe the results of Seeds trials.

Suitable candidates will have experience in a similar buying role, mail order / e-commerce knowledge and experience, an ability to take direction as well as use initiative and to see things through to completion.  Excellent communication and motivation skills are essential, as are a high level of professional integrity and strong sense of responsibility.  Excellent numerate and analytical skills are important as are an ability to think quickly and react with accuracy and foresight.  Applicants should be competent with Microsoft Excel, be highly organised with excellent attention to detail and an ability to work to a critical path.  A proactive approach, stamina and strong sense of commercial awareness are paramount.

Couple (Live In)

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a live-in couple to join a historic private estate in Devizes, Wiltshire.  This opening would suit a couple with demonstrable experience in garden/estate maintenance and housekeeping respectively.  A generous salary of £23,000 each is offered to candidates in addition a two-bedroom cottage on site with bills paid.

The impressive eight-bedroom main house is framed by an NGS registered, former RHS garden of six acres.  The 300-year-old garden is currently managed by a full-time Skilled Gardener who will require assistance from time to time with basic tasks such as mowing and hedge cutting.  The remainder of the estate maintenance duties will consist of non-horticultural tasks, i.e. DIY/handyman jobs on and inside the property buildings, occasional chauffeuring and general care of seven chickens and three dogs on site. Good physical fitness, a positive attitude, energy and a strong work ethic are essential requirements for this role, as is a full driving licence.

Duties under the responsibility of the Housekeeper will consist of the upkeep of the main house by way of cleaning, laundry, weekly shopping and some preparation of food for one child.  The three dogs will require care which will be limited to feeding and opening the door to enable them to entertain themselves in the large garden when the property owners are away.  The position will be a Monday to Friday role with free weekends except on very rare occasions, as unforeseen circumstances inevitably arise.  A full driving licence is also essential for this role.
