As the Grounds Maintenance Supervisor you will plan and allocate all work duties for a busy and multi-skilled team.

The post is based at our Sittingbourne Depot but you will be required to travel to carry out your day to day duties where your time is split between office and monitoring site working. You will have access to a company van and all equipment required to carry out all tasks.

Key responsibilities

-Good working knowledge of Grounds Maintenance and industry experience and a strong interest and willingness to learn.

-Completing all paperwork.

-Proven experience of working within a contracting environment.

-Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing at all levels.

-Effective smartphone user.

-Enthusiasm and drive to develop a career in the horticultural industry.

-To assist the Contracts manager and other supervisors to manage and coordinate the activities of the 20 Grounds teams to meet the clients service level agreement.

-Working with the Contracts manager and other supervisors to ensure that services are delivered in accordance with best practice, within unit budgets and with special consideration of all relevant health & safety legislation.

-Prioritise workload and assist / direct colleagues to ensure individual and team performance is maximised.

-Out of hours duties where necessary due to adverse weather conditions and the flexibility and dedication to act quickly and carry out duties such as weekend play area and park maintenance and storm damage mitigation, to protect and maintain business continuity at site.

-To work alongside and implement our office management systems.

Professional and personal competencies/qualifications

-Previous experience in the Horticultural industry.

-NVQ level 3 Amenity horticulture, or equivalent.

-Highly motivated and a good communicator.

-Basic IT skills with knowledge of MS Office applications.

-A keen learner and horticulture enthusiast, must be willing to develop own skills.

-Good knowledge of health and safety in the grounds maintenance industry.

-Full Clean Driving License

We are looking for an enthusiastic gardener who will compliment our existing small team, working in this beautiful country estate near Guildford, Surrey.

The private garden contains formal lawns, large herbaceous borders, rose garden, productive walled kitchen garden, greenhouses, and an orchard.

The gardener will be responsible for maintaining the gardens and grounds to a consistently high standard all year round. This includes growing vegetables, fruit and cut flowers for the household, propagate plants for border planting maintain water features.

Applicants must possess good plant knowledge and a high level of horticultural skills. He / She will be organised, have excellent time keeping skills, flexible in duties, good attention to detail and take pride their work. Having spraying and chainsaw tickets would be an advantage.

They will be part of a wider team on the estate and should be able to work well in team and liaise with other estate staff.  Candidates will have a good level of fitness and positive disposition. Experienced in using and maintain a wide range of garden machinery as well as a full clean driving licence is essential.

Working hours are normally Monday to Friday 7.30am-4pm. However, applicants may occasionally be required to work weekends when required for watering duties.

While maintaining the 70 acres of the Grade II listed University Parks, the team tends to over 200 sites including college quads, departmental spaces and public spaces such as the Radcliffe Observatory Quarter.

Our specialist arborists take care of 1,600 trees found in the Parks, plus the rest of the University’s stock dotted around the city – over 3,500 trees in total. 

We offer a full, horticultural, landscaping and arboricultural service to the wider University and Oxford colleges.

-Contribute to the development of the University Parks and the wider Functional Estate.

-Liaise with external and University clients regarding the provision of services offered.

-To monitor and control stock and ensure timely ordering of materials and equipment to facilitate the smooth running of the projects and routine work.

-To prepare and implement quotations and specifications for landscape projects and grounds maintenance contracts.

-To be responsible for the implementation of specific projects both for the University’s Capital Projects and for external clients.

-Liaising with members of the Capital Projects team to include; Project Officers and Managers. This would also include attending regular meetings and interfacing regularly with          the projects teams as required.

-To be responsible for monitoring, reporting and advising on the operational efficiency of the department.

Administrative

-To provide a frontline response to enquiries from other University departments, contract customers and visitors.

-To produce correspondence, reports, spreadsheets and plans to a high standard both for internal and external reporting.

-To produce suitable drawings and designs to develop landscape features as necessary.

-To quantify and cost work from drawings produced internally and by others.

-To be proactive in developing the department’s business, to represent the department as necessary, and to be the first point of contact with clients and customers on site.

Personnel

-To assist in the recruitment and induction of staff.

-To organise the training requirements of staff in relation to personal development and Health & Safety, and updating staff records accordingly.

-To monitor and advise on supervisory issues in relation to staff.

Finance

-To monitor costs of specific projects and prepare reports as required for the Superintendent.

-To have knowledge of and the ability to use the finance system to raise orders and check financial reports.

-To produce financial reports as required for internal and external reporting.

Security

-To share responsibility with other senior members of staff to ensure the overall security of buildings and equipment.

-Emergency call out for problems relating to the Parks, departmental buildings, and the tree stock both within the Parks and on the functional estate.

Health and Safety

-Responsible for producing and implementing site-specific risk assessments and method statements required to work on construction sites.

-Responsible for the overall health and safety of the visitors to The University Parks, to include the on-site buildings and facilities.

-To liaise with the University Safety and Insurance Officers as necessary on Health and Safety matters relating to the Parks site.

-To report on Health and Safety as required by the Superintendent and to advise on immediate Health and Safety matters.

-To assist with the implementation of the Health and Safety Policies of both the University Parks and the wider organisation.

Other duties

-To play a key role in improving the standard of horticultural practices and manage the on-site projects.

-Other duties commensurate with the post which may be required from time to time.

We are seeking a gardener/grounds maintenance operative to help our teams manage an interesting and varied range of outdoor areas.  The sites range from housing estates to country estates, and include some office areas and private homes.

Applications are invited from suitably experienced candidates with a horticultural qualification, who have good general knowledge of plants and ground care. Experience operating large garden machinery is essential and PA1/PA6 and chainsaw certificates are a distinct advantage.

The successful candidate will be a hands-on Gardener or Groundsperson with experience of working independently and the ability to manage a busy workload with minimal supervision as well as part of a team.

Reporting to the Head Groundsman, duties will include the maintenance of large lawn areas, car parks, flowers and flowerbeds, weed and pest control, seasonal pruning/hedge cutting, shrub maintenance, and any other related duties as required.
