An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Plantarea Manager to join the Outdoor Plants team on a full-time basis, working closely with the Buyer/Manager in the running of the outdoor plants department.
Horticultural knowledge is important and experience in a retail environment on a supervisory / management level is essential. Candidates will have a hands-on approach, but the role will also include the need for computer knowledge due to internal systems used for orders and stock. Good communication and team working skills are required as is the desire to deliver a high level of customer service. Please note that some heavy lifting will be involved as this is a physically demanding environment. A forklift licence is ideal but not essential.
The position involves working an average of 39 hours per week - Mondays to Fridays and alternate weekends (non-negotiable) with a fixed day off during the week. 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. weekdays and Saturdays and 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sundays. It will also include working late nights on Thursdays until 8:00 p.m. on a rota basis (once the garden centre is back open on Thursday evenings) and assisting at company events as and when required.

This vacancy is open to self-employed Skilled Gardeners/Horticulturists in the locality. An hourly rate will be paid in line with the successful candidate’s experience.
This stunning 5-acre garden is open to horticultural groups and occasional charity events and has been meticulously cared for over the years by a team of part-time staff, contractors, and a dedicated owner'. The garden is managed organically, is broken into garden rooms and comprises a kitchen garden, orchard, large mixed and herbaceous borders, roses, a glass house for plant propagation, water features, topiary, wildflowers, cutting flowers, pleached hornbeam, with manicured lawns contrasting the backdrop of pasture with sheep and mature native trees.
The ideal candidate will hold an academic horticultural qualification at RHS Level 2 or above with several years’ experience on large and diverse private estate gardens, however, less experienced applicants will be able to benefit from training from the garden consultant where necessary. Applicants must be confident with their plant identification skills and must be able to undertake species-specific pruning techniques, or at least have a solid grounding in the principles thereof. Physical fitness and energy are essential as this is a hands-on role in a large and densely planted garden. Some knowledge of, and an interest in, organic gardening would be beneficial.

Encourages and supports the development of employees within the Garden Centre and Merchandise function
- Where required supports the garden centre management in the training and development programme
- Operates clear lines of communication on company strategy, best working practice and knowledge transfer between all departments within the garden centres and Head Office Services
Delivers high level of Customer Service
- Conducts regular operational visits to garden centres to support the Department Managers
- Contributes to the development and implementation of a promotions calendar for the designated product range
- Produces a detailed promotions pack to coincide with promotions calendar
- Ensure regular communication with the centres to ensure that all stock related problems are resolved in a timely and effective manner
- Utilising the stock and order sheets, notifies the centres of all new product entering the business and products that are being delisted
- Work as an effective team member, undertaking other tasks as requested by Line manager and provide cover for other team members as appropriate

Gardener
A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen on a large historic estate in Dorset, for an experienced gardener in search of a rewarding role within a small team. This role will suit a skilled and practical gardener with at least five years’ experience and a genuine love for their profession.
This nationally significant ‘Capability’ Brown site of over 40-acres dates back over 400-years, is open to the public and is Grade 1 listed. The gardens comprise a wide range of ornamental planting, specimen trees and native woodland, a lake, glasshouse, beds/borders, and expansive areas of lawn.
Reporting to the Gardens Supervisor, the successful candidate will assist in the maintenance of the gardens and grounds and conduct a range of horticultural and landscape maintenance operations. The position would suit a knowledgeable gardener with private estate gardening experience and a strong working knowledge of a range of garden machinery including pedestrian, ride-on and ideally, tractor mounted mowers. The ideal candidate will hold a recognised horticultural qualification, spraying certificate (PA1/PA6) and preferably a chainsaw and UTV certificate, though the latter is not essential at this stage.
Regular duties, and those in which applicants must be proficient include the following:
- Horticultural maintenance of borders and lawns
- Seasonal bulb planting
- Assisting with greenhouse management and maintenance
- Assisting with irrigation systems and maintenance
- Being responsible for the safety of themselves, others in the workplace and visitors alike
- Applying herbicides and pesticides
- Watering and weeding
- Using tractors and mounted equipment, if qualified/experienced
- Mowing and lawn care with use of a variety of equipment
- Planting trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants with pruning and ongoing care, including labelling
- Hedge cutting and strimming
- Reporting any potential hazards to the Gardens Supervisor
- Litter collection, path, and road maintenance
Applications are sought from experienced gardeners with academic qualifications, e.g. a National Certificate or the first year of an ND or HND, RHS Level 2, or other qualifications in the theory of horticulture. NPTC PA1/PA6 and a driving licence are essential, with Chainsaw and UTV certifications desired but not essential so long as strong horticultural knowledge can be demonstrated. At least five years of practical horticulture is desired, as is an eye for detail, an ability to work well alone and as part of a team, and a willingness to learn and assist on the estate where necessary in order to ensure the smooth running of the gardens.
This is a full-time permeant role offering 40-hours per week on a year-round basis, with 28-days’ holiday (including Bank Holidays) and an employer pension contribution. Hours of work are 08:00 – 16:30, Monday to Friday.

Sole Gardener
A very attractive opportunity has arisen for a Sole Gardener on a beautiful private estate in much sought after location in West Dorset. The position would suit an experienced and skilled gardener with demonstrable garden management experience, i.e. Sole Gardener or supervisory level, with academic horticultural qualifications desired.
The traditional English country garden property encompasses approximately three acres and is surrounded by fields on all sides. Located on the outskirts of a small rural village, the garden itself comprises tall yew and laurel hedges, mature trees, rose beds, herbaceous borders, a rockery, two greenhouses and a small naturally fed pond. The garden is on a small hillside with manicured lawns and an informal paddock. A vegetable plot and fruit cage will need tending to by the successful applicant, as will climbing wisteria on the walls of the main house. Applicants should have experience of the above, be confident and skilled in pruning methods, i.e. of wisteria and roses, and be physically fit with good horticultural knowledge and plant identification skills. Candidates should be willing and able to undertake the general garden handyman duties required of a Sole Gardener, and of the estate security when the owners are away. A full driving licence is required as the property is located in a rural setting.

A driven all rounded skilled gardener is sought after for a stunning 40-acre private garden in West Dorset.
The gardens of this beautiful Grade I listed mansion consist of three acres of formal garden, pleasure grounds, kitchen garden, mature and young trees, principle lawns at the front and rear of the mansion, herbaceous borders, a variety of shrubs, cut flower garden and a lake. The mansion forms part of a wider rural estate however the garden is kept private.
The skilled gardener will join a team of three, reporting into the garden supervisor to maintain and enhance the garden as required. The successful candidate will have good horticultural knowledge, as they will take on duties such as maintaining herbaceous borders, carrying out planting schemes and specialised pruning as well as general garden maintenance such as weeding, hedge cutting, using pedestrian and ride on mowers for the lawn care and strimming.
Applicants should ideally have a minimum level 2 horticultural qualification, combined with good plant knowledge. PA1/PA6 spray certificates would be an advantage but not essential for the role. Excellent technical skills and previous experience working on private estates is required. You will need to be organised, able to plan and prioritise your workload and have the drive and motivation to maintain the garden to a high standard. Knowledge of growing fruit and vegetables would be an advantage.
Other requirements for the role are good communications skills and ability to work well alongside other staff and contractors. Experience with operating and basic maintenance of garden machinery and good craft skills are also desirable.

The rural property is situated in a beautiful location, approximately 20-miles from the Dorset coast. The historic main house is surrounded by formal gardens with parkland, a river, mature trees and managed paddocks beyond. A small team of staff ensure the smooth running of the estate, of which the successful applicant will play an integral part.
The formal gardens include ornamental beds and borders, a glasshouse, expansive lawns, a swimming pool, a lake, and mature trees throughout. This position will require applicants to have a thorough understanding of, and demonstrable experience in kitchen gardening, as a wide variety of produce is grown for the house on an ongoing basis.
The Skilled Gardener will play a leading role in the management of the formal gardens and will be required to provide guidance and direction to part-time gardeners when on site. The owner of the property is passionate about the gardens and will provide priorities at the beginning of each week in relation to the changing requirements of the estate.
Suitable applicants for this role will have extensive experience of managing gardens on private estates from a hands-on perspective and will preferably have some experience of directing/supervising garden staff. Applicants should have good plant identification skills, excellent attention to detail and a methodological approach to their work. Demonstrable experience in kitchen gardening and plant propagation/glasshouse work is essential, as is competency in the operation and basic maintenance of garden machinery.
