An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced gardener to join a close estate team on a beautiful private property in Central Dorset, on a full-time basis.

The rural property is situated in a beautiful location, approximately 20-miles from the Dorset coast.  The historic main house is surrounded by formal gardens with parkland, mature trees and managed paddocks beyond.  Within the estate a small team of staff ensure the smooth running of the grounds, of which the successful applicant will play an integral part. The 100-acre estate houses a variety of formal gardens including ornamental bedding, borders and lawns, a glasshouse, walled vegetable garden, a swimming pool, 2 lakes’, an orchard and mature trees throughout.  This position will require applicants to have a good understanding of, and experience in kitchen gardening, as a wide variety of produce is grown for the house on an ongoing basis, along with a comprehensive plant knowledge and the maintenance of to provide the estate with fresh cut flowers.  

The Gardener will play an important role in ensuring the formal gardens are maintained to high standards while working closely alongside the wider team, that include the Head Gardener, a full time Groundsman and a part time colleague.

Suitable applicants for this role will have experience of working within a private estate environment from a hands-on perspective.  Applicants should have good plant identification skills, excellent attention to detail and a methodological approach to their work.  Demonstrable experience in kitchen gardening and plant propagation/glasshouse work is essential, as is competency in the operation and basic maintenance of garden machinery.  Spraying qualifications (PA1/PA6), an in-date First Aid certificate, and chainsaw certificate would be desirable, though training can be provided in the areas necessary for otherwise suitable candidates. An opportunity has arisen for an experienced and talented horticulturist to join a stunning private estate based near Shaftesbury on the Dorset, Wiltshire border.

This position will suit an experienced and knowledgeable gardener with a desire to take on the maintenance and future development of a horticulturally diverse, typical English Country style garden in order to utilise their full horticultural skill set.

The historic Grade II* listed property is surrounded by 5-acres of new and established gardens. The gardens are currently being renovated by the very talented designer Miranda Brooks, the successful candidate will be working closely with the designer to see the devilment of the garden come to life.

The gardens boast impressive herbaceous borders, bursting with colour and texture throughout the seasons as well as formal lawns, orchard, carp pond and charming topiary sculptures and a new kitchen garden with a wonderful new greenhouse that is yet to be planted and developed.

The grounds are also host to a newly renovated lake with an Oak jetty and decking seating platform along with picnic areas, there is also an additional lake which is yet to be renovated along with streams running through the garden.

Suitable applicants will possess a recognised horticultural qualification as well as extensive experience in horticulturally diverse gardens in a private estate setting. Competence in all horticultural techniques is essential, as is a good understanding of vegetable gardening, plus a passion for developing gardens to reach their full potential.

Candidates will be expected to manage all aspects of grounds maintenance, including lawns, hedge cutting and topiary trimming, pathways and irrigation systems. This is a hands-on role so good physical fitness and a willingness to work outdoors in all weathers is essential.

Practical experience with the use and care of a full range of garden machinery is desired, with a chainsaw certification being advantageous. A rare opportunity to join our amazing charity has arisen due to retirement.

Our registered charity, now in its 33rd year, offers support and rehabilitation to adults, whose lives are impacted by poor mental health, through the use of therapeutic horticulture.

We rely upon the sale of the plants we propagate to fund the running costs and activities of the charity. We sell to both the public and trade customers and our retail area is open seven days per week most of the year, dropping to five and a half days in the winter months.  As such, the role of Nursery Propagator is an essential part of the process.

Based on 4.5 acres, our site is small with one propagation area which is unheated and manual. We propagate a wide variety of shrubs, perennials, vegetables etc and a broad spectrum of knowledge is required for good propagation in different conditions.

Our service-users and volunteer Friends take part in all aspects of the nursery work and staff lead and direct operations. Patience and some understanding of mental health are essential, we are non-judgemental, inclusive and empowering in our interaction with others.

The role requires physical fitness, adaptability and the willingness to assist other areas of the nursery when needed. The working week is Monday to Friday 8am to 4pm plus attendance at our twice annual Plant Sales, held on Saturdays, for which time in lieu is given.

Horticultural Duties

  • To be responsible for the propagation of in excess of 150,000 plants for sale in our two projects.
  • To liaise closely with the Nursery Supervisors at both projects to develop potential for increased sales and the sustainability of the project.
  • To assist where required in all aspects of the nursery including customer enquiries, stock control, watering, deliveries and general nursery duties as directed by the Nursery Supervisor or Project Manager.
  • To instruct and supervise Volunteers and Friends in the Propagation Unit to help develop their skills and confidence in a workplace.
  • To monitor and report on issues relating to Volunteers’ welfare, progress and support needs.

Other

  • To maintain a safe working environment in compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974.
  • To be responsible for the Nursery in the absence of senior staff.
  • To promote public awareness of the Charity’s work and mental health issues.
  • To attend relevant training in order to update knowledge and acquire new skills required for the role.

Groundsperson

Our client is currently seeking a full time live-in groundsperson for a beautiful riverside home in North Dorset.

The gardens consist of around two acres of lawn and mature formal garden surrounded by a further six acres of woodland, orchard and meadow with a river running through the land. There are avenues of hornbeam hedges, walled gardens, and rills and a courtyard garden. The groundsperson will be working alongside a part time gardener, who is responsible for the roses and much of the plant care. 

The successful candidate will be responsible for the general maintenance of the garden including grass cutting, lawn maintenance, strimming and edging, pruning of trees and larger shrubs including willows, fruit trees and Portuguese laurels, Hedge Cutting - mainly hornbeam and laurel, Pollarding and planting of willows, poplars and other trees and keeping the garden generally tidy. The client has a range of garden machinery and the groundsperson will be responsible for the machinery maintenance; arranging servicing and repairs as well as hiring from external contractors some machinery, diggers, high hedge cutters as and when required. The groundsperson will maintain the courtyard and gravelled area, supervise the irrigation and management pumps to ponds and fountains, and maintain the river level and carry out river care. 

Other responsibilities include small restoration jobs inside the house, occasional exterior and interior Painting jobs, organisation of logs for house, organisation of rubbish for collection, booking of services for boiler and appliances, swimming pool maintenance and car cleaning. The groundsperson will have house security and keyholder duties. In case of very heavy rainfall, sluice gates will need to be opened on weekends/ at night. This has been made much easier by the existence of online weather forecasting and owner’s 22-year experience of the river.

Applicants must be able to use their initiative and work efficiently. The ideal candidate will have experience operating garden/grounds machinery (tractors, mowers, strimmers, hedge cutters, chainsaws). Knowledge of digger operation desirable but not essential. A full UK driving licence is essential and own vehicle.

Working hours will be: 8.30am - 5pm, Monday - Friday, some flexibility is expected. Some Saturday mornings may be required.The position requires being based on site therefore an attractive two bedroom converted barn is provided rent free with the role. The accommodation includes a large sitting room, two bedrooms, a bathroom, kitchen and good-sized garden with raised vegetable beds and greenhouses. Most bills are covered by the employer such as council tax, water, electricity and oil. Annual leave provided is 21 days holiday per year plus bank holidays.
