Job Specification

Gardener / Estate Worker - Live In - EC5513 - This position has been filled
A very attractive opportunity has arisen for a practically-minded and experienced estate maintenance person / gardener to take ownership of a beautiful estate on a live-in, permanent basis. The position, based near Esher in Surrey, would suit a physically fit, friendly gardener with excellent estate maintenance skills and a strong work ethic.
The 4-acre private gardens predominantly comprise open lawns and laurel hedging with low-maintenance beds, topiary box and mature trees. Applicants should have a horticultural background and be competent in the operation and basic maintenance of garden machinery, including ride-on mowers. There is no requirement for plant propagation or kitchen gardening, though candidates should be experienced private estate gardeners with good attention to detail. Some experience of lawn care would be beneficial.
In addition to basic garden maintenance, the successful applicant must be well-versed in general estate maintenance, such that they are able to work confidently on their own and to solve problems as they arise. Non-horticultural estate duties will include the basic care of a pond, swimming pool and tennis court, clearing gutters of leaves (from a ladder), keeping the paths and driveway clear, cleaning and refuelling of cars, minor indoor handyman duties (changing lightbulbs etc.), sourcing and managing contractors (tree surgery, plumbers, electricians etc.), care of dogs, cats and chickens when the owners are away, window cleaning (a few times per year only), airport runs (sometimes at unsociable times, 6 to 8 times yearly), take rubbish to the tip (3 to 4 times yearly), taking bins out to the road on a weekly basis, and other similar duties as they arise.
The family are an informal and friendly household, looking for a positive and trustworthy person to take pride in the management of their property. Applicants must be positive in their outlook, friendly and easy-going, have a strong work ethic and have demonstrable experience in a similar role. Applicants with academic horticultural qualifications and/or a strong private estates gardening and maintenance background are encouraged to apply. Candidates must be non-smokers and hold a full UK driving licence. The production of a DBS check (criminal background) may be required of applicants for this role.
This position is offered with a generous salary and a small two-bedroom cottage, located at the opposite end of the 4-acre garden to the main house. General Estate Worker - Live Out - EC5309 - This position has been filled
An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced and multi-talented Estate Worker and Paddock Maintenance person to join an established team on a private estate, located within the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The position would suit a competent and driven professional with particular experience in paddock maintenance.
The large estate comprises three properties in addition to the main house, each of which encompass between 50 and 100 acres of paddocks which play host to approximately 100 – 120 horses in total. Thirteen employees work on the estate, of whom two work in the gardens, three on the stud, and the rest with the horses. The successful applicant will be part of the estate team though you will be expected to manage your own time and work autonomously.
The successful applicant will be responsible for maintenance of the fields and paddocks (mowing, watering, harrowing and fertilising, spraying and associated treatments), watering of the wider estate grounds, management of hedges and trees, tractor driving, machinery maintenance and general labouring and estate maintenance when necessary.
Applicants must have excellent attention to detail and time management skills, good communication skills and experience in each of the above areas. Candidates will ideally hold chainsaw competence certification and spray certificates. Candidates should have demonstrable experience with boom sprayers, flail arms and other tractor-mounted equipment. This position will be physically demanding at times so applicants should be physically fit and able to work efficiently in all weathers, whether manually or with the assistance of heavy machinery.
This is a full-time permanent position; five days per week (08:00 to 17:00) with 28-days holiday (including Bank Holidays). The successful candidate will be subject to a three month probationary period and will be required to sign a confidentiality agreement.

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Estate Gardener to join a large private estate located within the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The position would suit an experienced maintenance gardener with excellent attention to detail, time management skills, and a well-rounded knowledge of garden machinery and basic estate DIY. The large estate comprises a number of flats and cottages in addition to the main house, some of which encompass between 50 and 100 acres of paddocks which play host to approximately 100 horses in total. The estate team include maintenance and housekeeping staff as well as a Skilled Gardener who looks after the main house garden on a full-time basis.
The successful candidate for this role will be responsible for maintaining gardens associated with the flats and cottages on the estate. This will involve areas such as a half-acre domestic garden for one of the cottages, the small gardens of rented flats on site, as well as the creation and maintenance of hanging baskets. The majority of duties will involve the management of lawns, hedges, herbaceous/mixed borders, as well as basic estate DIY when required. Candidates with experience of using tractors, chainsaws and chemical spray equipment are encouraged to apply, though these qualities are not necessarily essential at the outset. Applicants must be practical and positive in their approach, with a ‘can do’ attitude and demonstrable experience in the above areas.
Applicants must be confident in their ability to manage their own time, must be physically fit and passionate about developing their existing skill set through self-learning if necessary. A driving licence is essential as the properties are set within a three-mile radius of the main house. Hours of work are 08:00 to 17:00, Monday to Friday. Due to an internal promotion, the School is looking for a full-time Gardener to join the successful Grounds Department and to assist in the upkeep and development of its prestigious gardens.
As a hands-on Gardener, you’ll assist in making sure that the gardens are maintained to a high standard. You’ll be passionate, enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the varied plants within the garden, having a keen interest in plants and horticultural knowledge of plant management.
The successful applicant will be a good team player with the ability to work on their own initiative, with good attention to detail. Previous experience of working in a horticultural environment is essential, and experience of working within a school or college would be beneficial but is not an essential requirement.
Normal working days are Monday to Friday 0730 to 1630, throughout the year, with the need for periodic unsocial hours, including weekend duties, as required by the Grounds Manager – reasonable notice having been given.
