Head Gardener

An experienced, enthusiastic and responsible Head Gardener is required to work in a private garden near Andover.  It is an extremely exciting opportunity to be involved in a site that is both an existing landscape as well as a new project.

The garden requires work to bring selected elements back into shape. They will have the chance to have an input into the setting up of some of the supporting garden infrastructure (e.g. contribute to the internal layout of the Machine Store). Some parts of the garden are also currently under construction, so they will be joining the project during the on-going implementation phase. The candidate should have strong horticultural knowledge, as well as extensive experience in both administrative and practical management of gardens and landscapes throughout the year and proven supervisory experience. 

The position is fulltime, and they will be required to work with and manage other garden staff and coordinate with external contractors, as required, for specialist horticultural projects. They will be expected to manage, programme and oversee any external maintenance and service contractors for items such as the irrigation, cascades, water features, lighting, energy systems etc. It will also be necessary for them to gain a working understanding of the relevant equipment for day-to-day management. They will be expected to keep up-to-date records and daily diaries accordingly. 

The site incorporates existing woodland, which has been enhanced with recent planting, mature specimen trees, veteran trees, and arboretum, mixed shrub and herbaceous borders, formal and informal planting, formal lawns, hedges, cascades, formal water features and a working walled garden planted for both produce and cut flowers with a mixed zone greenhouse, including one for houseplants and display plants. There will be a working compost area and they should be comfortable around animals, including horses.   

The successful candidate will be expected to maintain the grounds to the highest horticultural standards throughout the seasons and have a sound understanding of general garden machinery, their uses and maintenance.  They should be willing to undertake training as required and have qualifications in spraying (PA1 and PA6). Hedge-cutting and chainsaw use would be an advantage. They should be good at budget planning and have a comprehensive understanding of the relevant Health and Safety Regulations, environmental management, manual handling and risk assessment. 

Candidates must have excellent interpersonal skills, be self-motivated, capable of working as part of a team and have a valid driving license.

Our client seeks an experienced gardener to help maintain the gardens on a year-round basis following the annual calendar. Applicants will possess an academic horticultural qualification, such as a Kew Diploma, RHS level 2 or equivalent, combined with extensive experience working in a similar role. As such, excellent plant knowledge and technical skills are essential for this position with experience in compost management, propagation, spraying, weeding and rejuvenating beds. A self-motivated, organised individual with a self-start attitude and proven track record of managing both a mature English country garden as well as a small team. A strong work ethic, ability to work to their own initiative and willingness to work to consistently high standards are qualities which are essential for this role. Candidates will be flexible and willing to extend their duties where needed. As such, this is a physically demanding position which requires a fit and strong individual who is comfortable working in all weathers.

General maintenance duties will include but are not limited to pruning, propagating, weeding, edging and compost management. Experience in managing a small team as well as contractors will be advantageous for prospective candidates. Experience in the use and maintenance of a wide range of gardening machinery as well as PA1 and PA6 spraying certificates, and a chainsaw certification are desirable for this position. The house is equipped with machinery, which the gardener should be capable of maintaining between services.

Candidates will also need to provide evidence of qualifications held and hold a full driver’s licence. This is a full-time permanent position. The owners are seeking to employ an experienced and dynamic Head Gardener who will have excellent horticultural knowledge and have experience of, or affinity with, historic gardens, and a passion for maintaining grounds to the highest standards, working closely in line with the owners’ vision.  The role will be supported by a small team and seasonal help.

It is essential to hold an academic horticultural qualification at Level 3 or above and ideally CS30/CS31 and PA1/PA6A certificates. The successful applicant will work with the client to create and deliver the agreed strategies for our short, medium and long-term goals, including agreeing and managing the budget. Responsibilities will include:

  • the development and implementation of annual management plans for the estate’s gardens, formal parterre, herbaceous borders, greenhouse, vegetable/fruit gardens, lawns, water features, and newly planted and existing mature trees, liaising with specialist sub-contractors, where appropriate.
  • maintain or improve the existing gardens, including some hard landscaping, while also undertaking new projects.  All this work will be undertaken with a great eye for detail and a passion to achieve the highest standards.
  • have a detailed knowledge of the watering requirements for all plantings and manage the irrigation system to that effect.  The irrigation system is under an annual maintenance contract, although experience of minor repairs and adjustments is essential.
  • Assist with the implementation of sound Health and Safety practice, machinery and equipment maintenance.  You will be able to handle a wide range of garden machinery, including tractors, mowers and chainsaws.  The ability to maintain machinery is a bonus.

Candidates will be flexible and sensitive in respecting the principles of landscape design and have the imagination to retain and adapt these as necessary. Job Description

The Head of Production will oversee the entire production team and provide strategic input on the day-to-day and long-term running of the company. The ideal candidate will be highly experienced in the horticultural sector or have experience of a similar role within a fresh produce or FMCG business.

The Head of Production is an integral role within our client’s business, predominantly overseeing end to end company-wide operations including the production, growth and dispatch of the product. In reporting to the Board of Directors, the successful candidate will be responsible for the direct line management of the Transport Manager, four Site Managers and Growing Team. A key focus for the Head of Production will be to develop and implement operating methods and procedures including company-wide space planning method, designed to reduce or eliminate operating problems and improve product cost, quality, delivery, performance, and customer satisfaction. Key Accountabilities
  • Responsible for managing all elements of plant production (including planning, potting, moving plants, minimising waste and managing budgets) to achieve customer specifications and sales windows.
  • Active member of the Leadership Team contributing to the running of the Company and shaping overall business strategy.
  • Chair regular production meetings to review, evaluate and improve the performance of the production team.
  • Build strong internal working relationships with Purchasing, Production, Operations and QA teams to ensure that purchasing timelines are met; procedures are followed; customer specifications are achieved and goods are dispatched in a timely manner.
  • Establish an R&D team and lead on new projects (e.g. new varieties, peat-free trials etc), as directed by the Company.
  • Work closely with Stock Control to ensure that production data is accurately captured in the Company’s ERP software (Netsuite).
  • Work closely with the space management planning team to ensure we grow the right product in the right environment and at the right time.
  • Effective line management of site managers, growers and logistics team. Work with HR and Training Principal to ensure that the production team is continuously developing and meeting skills requirements.
  • Work closely with the Quality and Compliance Manager to ensure all operations on site are in accordance with the HSE expectations.
  • Create an environment of employee engagement, training and succession to create a high performance, motivated work culture and continuous improvement environment.
  • Identify production CAPEX and investment opportunities for the team.
  • Have a sound awareness of industry developments and news. Attend tradeshows, industry events and customer meetings, as required.
