Due to growth our client is currently looking to recruit an experienced Landscape Estimator to work with the Director responsible for tendering. The main objective of this position will be to secure by tendering and negotiation sufficient contracts to meet the company’s targets for turnover, project type and project size.

This is a hybrid Landscape Estimator, role with a mix of working from home and from the head office in Surrey. The position will involve:

  • Tender preparation and submission.
  • Helping the full bid submission
  • Identifying areas of risk
  • Attending site meetings
  • Client communication during the tender process

Our client would like candidates who have knowledge of soft and hard landscaping and general horticulture/technical knowledge.

They should also be skilled in presentation, reporting, questioning and listing, creating rapport and IT, including Word, Excel and Access, though full secretarial support is available. Desirable personal attributes include self-motivation whilst working with different teams, confident professionalism, willingness to learn and an interest in the clients and colleagues view point.

We are currently recruiting for a Garden and Landscape Design Assistant to join our expanding gardening team at Hand Picked Hotels this will based from our office in Sevenoaks in Kent however will require extensive travel across all our hotels.

About the role:
  • Reporting to the Lead Designer of Hotel Landscape and Gardens, and liaising with the Head of Gardens at Hand Picked Hotels.
  • This role will cover all our 21 hotels in the UK including the Channel Islands and will involve travel and overnight stays in our hotels as required, it will be based from our office in Sevenoaks with hybrid working.
  • As Garden and Landscape Design Assistant your role will be responsible for following through on design changes within the hotel group reporting to the Lead Designer of Hotel Landscapes and Gardens.
  • To support the lead designer in the development of new designs across the  group from conception to completion.
  •  To assist with costing and achievability evaluation of immediate design changes, in liaison with the Regional General Managers and Head of Gardens.
  • To assist the Lead in-house designer with the design, detailing and costing of hotel garden designs across the group.
  • To produce CAD/Vectorworks planting plans, construction detailing, working drawings and work schedules.
  • Reporting to the lead Garden Designer to project manage major new garden changes and designs, liaising with the contractor and hotel gardening team.
  • To monitor progress in design implementation and report back to the Lead Garden Designer, maintaining detailed ongoing schedule of costs.
  • You will be expected to visit each hotel a minimum 6 x a year to audit changes and view potential new changes.

Our clients supply 90% of garden centres and over five major retailers across the UK, growing within a mixture of glasshouses, polytunnels and outdoor beds. Our client wishes to recruit a Head of Production to join the existing, experienced Leadership Team. The individual will be joining a very stable and successful family business with a rich heritage built over 4 generations of growing.

Job Description

The Head of Production will oversee the entire production team and provide strategic input on the day-to-day and long-term running of the company. The ideal candidate will be highly experienced in the horticultural sector or have experience of a similar role within a fresh produce or FMCG business.

The Head of Production is an integral role within our client’s business, predominantly overseeing end to end company-wide operations including the production, growth and dispatch of the product. In reporting to the Board of Directors, the successful candidate will be responsible for the direct line management of the Transport Manager, four Site Managers and Growing Team. A key focus for the Head of Production will be to develop and implement operating methods and procedures including company-wide space planning method, designed to reduce or eliminate operating problems and improve product cost, quality, delivery, performance, and customer satisfaction. In line with the company’s Core Values, they will be required to create an environment of employee engagement, training and succession to create a high performance, motivated work culture and continuous improvement environment.

Key Accountabilities
  • Responsible for managing all elements of plant production (including planning, potting, moving plants, minimising waste and managing budgets) to achieve customer specifications and sales windows.
  • Active member of the Leadership Team contributing to the running of the Company and shaping overall business strategy.
  • Chair regular production meetings to review, evaluate and improve the performance of the production team.
  • Build strong internal working relationships with Purchasing, Production, Operations and QA teams to ensure that purchasing timelines are met; procedures are followed; customer specifications are achieved and goods are dispatched in a timely manner.
  • Establish an R&D team and lead on new projects (e.g. new varieties, peat-free trials etc), as directed by the Company.
  • Work closely with Stock Control to ensure that production data is accurately captured in the Company’s ERP software (Netsuite).
  • Work closely with the space management planning team to ensure we grow the right product in the right environment and at the right time.
  • Effective line management of site managers, growers and logistics team. Work with HR and Training Principal to ensure that the production team is continuously developing and meeting skills requirements.
  • Work closely with the Quality and Compliance Manager to ensure all operations on site are in accordance with the HSE expectations.
  • Create an environment of employee engagement, training and succession to create a high performance, motivated work culture and continuous improvement environment.
  • Identify production CAPEX and investment opportunities for the team.
  • Have a sound awareness of industry developments and news. Attend tradeshows, industry events and customer meetings, as required.

The beautiful Swiss property is surrounded by 12000 m2 (about 3 acres) of tiered garden and meadows. After extensive renovation and garden groundwork, the owners are looking for a gardener to implement a working kitchen garden and develop the garden as a whole. The style of the garden is naturalist and other areas consist of lawns, raised beds, borders, young and mature trees, a rose garden, glasshouse, tennis court and swimming pool.

There is room for improvement in the garden, so the successful applicant will have a chance to demonstrate their talent by way of subtle and bold new ideas. The Head Gardener will be responsible for one full time gardener, one part time gardener and contractors therefore effective communication is important. Additional tasks include looking after the pets and livestock.

Skills and outlook:

  • Working effectively with discerning clients
  • Collaborating with other professionals including garden designers, architects, and engineers.

As the House Manager/Butler you will be responsible for the overall management, care and upkeep of the property which will involve managing a housekeeper, as well as organising and liaising with outside contractors. The House Manager will ensure the property is secure at all times, oversee the maintenance of the property, and take responsibility for household inventory. Administrative responsibilities will include managing the household budget, petty cash management and keeping accurate accounting. Day to day you will deal with correspondence including emails, posts and phone calls keeping the principles updated frequently whilst liaising with the team of staff and sharing information to the team on behalf of the principle. This is also a hands-on role, and where required the successful candidates will be expected to roll up their sleeves and help in other areas such as with the household staff in the upkeep of the property.

Additional tasks will include Butler duties when the principles are in residence during July and August. Delivering exemplary customer service skills and display a genuine passion for creating an exceptional experience for all. Candidates should have extensive silver service experience with the ability to lay up and serve at table, serving drinks and canapés and announcing guests upon arrival. On occasion, the successful applicant may be required to travel to the principles other properties to cover existing staff, these are located in Monaco, Mougins and Sardinia.

This is a full-time, permanent position. The role will have busy periods during July and August whilst the principles are in residence when the family are entertaining, followed by quieter periods when the principles are away; therefore, workload and working time will vary. An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Head Gardener to play a key role in the ongoing maintenance and enhancement of a beautiful private estate in Gloucestershire.  The role will involve day-to-day hands-on leadership and supervision of a team of skilled gardeners in all aspects of the horticulturally diverse garden.  The successful candidate will need to work with the property owners to enhance and develop the garden on an ongoing basis.  This role will suit a horticulturist with strong experience at senior level within private service, strong time management skills, excellent horticultural knowledge and desire to take on a dynamic garden on a collaborative basis.

The Head Gardener will oversee the small team of gardeners and be the principal point of contact to the property owner.  Applicants must therefore be excellent communicators and be able to manage the team with diplomacy, whilst maintaining their respect. The property owners are genuinely enthusiastic and dedicated to their gardens and as such, this role will be varied and interesting with a high standard of horticulture required at all times. The garden is not open to the public. 

The intensely planted 9-acre formal garden has undergone major improvement works including a new design for the historic walled and wider garden areas by Tom Stuart-Smith, and the ongoing development of a productive garden and flower cutting area. Set within a stunning landscape, the garden includes the walled garden comprising productive and ornamental areas and a large, varied glasshouse.  Around the house, there are beautifully planted compartmentalised spaces with perennials, shrubs, roses and wonderful views.  Beyond the house a woodland garden leads to parkland. 

Applications are sought from experienced and knowledgeable private estate Senior/Head Gardeners who will have assumed responsibility of a large private garden and garden staff management previously. 

The successful candidate will be used to handling dynamic environments with some pressure at times, will be adept at problem solving and will enjoy rising to and managing challenges alongside a talented team.  Suitable candidates will be confident and considerate, motivated, organised and professional hands-on gardeners who are able to inspire their team.  The post holder will be socially confident with excellent communication skills and an ability and willingness to liaise with other property staff and engage positively with the owners and any consultants.  Good organisational experience with a very good general understanding of all areas of gardening including of perennials, roses, flower cutting and edible production are necessary in addition to lawn care and the operation and basic maintenance of garden machinery. The Head Gardener must have a good general understanding of kitchen gardening.  Applicants must be able to demonstrate an ability to attain consistently high standards of horticultural management and presentation within a private estate setting.

A generous salary is offered for the ideal candidate in addition to a prestigious three-bedroom cottage close to the estate.
