My client is a long-established company comprising of two well-known garden centres and a very successful landscaping department. The landscaping team, of around 10 members, covers all aspects of domestic and commercial landscaping within North Devon and the surrounding areas. Their reputation is everything, holding BALI membership for a considerable time, they pride themselves on being the go-to landscaping company in the area. Now an exciting opportunity for an experienced, hard working and enthusiastic Landscape Manager who has strong knowledge of the industry, both hard and soft, to join the team and take on many of the tasks currently undertaken by one of the company directors who is looking to take a step back.

Key responsibilities:

Candidates will be working on exciting projects, ranging up to £150,000 in value with multiple projects running at any one time. Main tasks for the Landscape Manager will include but are not limited to:

  • Undertake site visits, surveys and meetings with clients as required to discuss projects.
  • Basic site surveys, review of drawings and any bills or quantities, then preparation of appropriate quotations.
  • Assessing risk and maintaining a safe working environment with regular toolbox talks and record keeping.
  • Purchasing and stock control
  • Create handover packs and carry out ongoing monitoring of the installation teams during projects.
  • Daily processing of worksheets to allow close monitoring of labour and material costs on each project, plus identification of any extras.
  • Identify any training needs within the team.
  • Invoicing of completed work.
  • Active involvement in recruitment of employees.
  • Attend regular production meetings with the Directors.
Candidate Experience/Qualifications:
  • Candidates applying for the Landscape Manager vacancy will need to have a minimum of 2/3 years’ experience in a similar role within the Landscaping Industry.
  • Full drivers’ licence.
  • CSCS card holder.
  • Computer literacy with Word and Excel. Experience with AutoCAD and design is not essential but advantageous.
  • Great communication skills with clients, suppliers and employees.
  • Good decision making and problem solving to achieve maximum profits.
  • The ability to work on your own initiative.

Gardener/Caretaker

Based in a beautiful rural setting in Normandy, France, a hands-on Gardener/Caretaker is sought. The 1000-hectare estate offers pastures, woodlands, informal gardens, arboretum, a small lake and an orchard. The main house is a 300-year old chateau and there are a number of outbuildings, including a workshop, guest cottage, and a separate 3 bed, 2 reception room house that comes with the position.  Roughly 9 hectares are maintained formally, with the rest comprising woodlands and pastures, some of which are let out.  It is certified as an organic farm and there is a small flock of sheep, some chickens, and a vegetable garden.  Although the property is rural, there is a town of 25,000 population 10 km away, and the coastal beaches are a short 30 min drive away.  This is a secondary family residence for our London-based client, who travel regularly to the property for school holidays and longer periods over the summer. 

Our client is seeking a live-in Gardener / Caretaker for a full time, permanent position.  The family is actively involved with the management of the property and is in direct communication at least weekly to discuss ongoing activity at the property.  They are a relaxed and understated family, with three school-aged children.

The position is the only employed member of staff on the property, although there are regular tradespeople to the property, including regular cleaning and upkeep of the interior of the chateau which is contracted out.  The role is ideal for someone who is hands on, multi-skilled from gardening to equipment maintenance to working with animals and is self-motivated.  It offers the scope to create and execute new projects, and the owners are very open to taking the property in a direction that aligns with the skills and interests of the caretaker.

The position is open to an individual or ideally, a couple.  Work should be locally part or full time for the non-employed partner, or of course this would be perfect for someone who’s partner works remotely or who stays at home with young children.

The main responsibilities of the Gardener /Caretaker role but not limited to, is to carry out garden maintenance duties, to include mowing, pruning, cutting, strimming, weeding, hoeing, raking, etc. as well as weekly, strimming and clearing of approx. 9 hectare park. Maintain and prune hedges. Planting out the summer and winter flower beds and planters Care as well as the maintenance of extensive rose garden. Clean and maintain koi pond. Tend to fruit trees in the orchard and plan, plant, and maintain organic vegetable garden, the propagation of seedlings and plants. Maintenance of woodlands including selected clearing of fallen trees and re-plantings.

The caretaker responsibilities are to keep the owners apprised of any minor or major damage and wear and tear to buildings and property, and either carry out or arrange and supervise repairs. Carry out repairs to fences and gates, keeping outside areas clean and tidy, including outbuilding. Weeding of pathways, replacement of light bulbs in internal and external lamps and supplying the main house with firewood. There will be occasional painting and basic carpentry, plumbing, and electrictics works required. Previous experience of maintaining the upkeep of tractor, chainsaws, strimmer, and other garden machinery and equipment is desirable. As there is livestock on the estate there will be the requirement to feed the animals (currently sheep, chickens, but may consider a few cows). Ensuring the security and the occasional errands into nearby village for supplies and picking up of guests will also be required.

Management of external contractors will be an additional feature of this position and therefore previous experience in doing so will be advantageous for prospective candidates. Applicants should be physically fit and with a ‘can do’ attitude. A self-motivated individual/s with a strong work ethic, ability to work to their own initiative and willingness to work to consistently high standards are qualities which are essential for this role.

The successful candidate will possess the following skills:

Will have experience in a similar position a good knowledge of horticulture, gardening and landscaping; horticultural qualifications a plus a basic knowledge of farming and agriculture, with organics a plus. Excellent attention to detail and take pride in their work. Additionally speak fluent English; some spoken French is required, to at least a basic conversational level and have a European passport or residency.

Terms of Employment:

  • Hours: 39 per week  
  • Occasional overtime when required (with sufficient notice)
  • Guaranteed days off:   Generally approx. 30 min of animal care on weekends / day, otherwise free

An exciting opportunity for a Senior Gardener or Gardening Couple has arisen to work within a stunning private estate, near Chalfont St Giles, Buckinghamshire. The current Gardener has been with the owners for a wonderful 18 years and due to their upcoming retirement, the client is now looking for enthusiastic and passionate horticulturalists to join the estate.

In its entirety the estate covers 250-acres, with 6-acres of both relaxed and formal gardens surrounding the property. Other elements include a Victorian greenhouse, a variety of climbers and a Victorian lido which has recently been converted into a pond. Therefore, this role would suit candidates who can offer their creative input and help deliver the new projects to the highest standards.  

Applicants should ideally hold a horticultural qualification combined with excellent plant knowledge and previous experience working on private estates. Experience in planting, pruning, lawn care and propagation is necessary for the role, as is competence in the use of a wide range of machinery and good craft skills. A full UK driving licence is essential. Sole Gardener

An idyllic vacancy has arisen for an experienced and skilled Sole Gardener to take ownership of a stunning Luytens style garden near Windlesham in Surrey.  This position would suit an energetic and knowledgeable plants person with a creative eye.

The 3.5-acre garden comprises expansive areas of lawn which back directly onto a golf course, giving a delightful backdrop to the garden.  Two long beds are located in the main lawn: one herbaceous and one containing primarily azaleas, camellias and rhododendrons. There are additional beds bordering the house which are planted out each Spring and a large patio area with a sunken pond stocked with koi fish and water plants.  Climber plants such as roses, wisteria, hydrangeas and ivy are planted all around the house and require appropriate species-specific pruning and maintenance. A glasshouse is used for plant propagation and growing and will require management by the successful applicant. The garden also contains a kitchen garden which grows a variety of fruit trees, soft fruit, along with vegetables and cut flowers. There is also a wildflower area which the gardener which needs maintaining.

The Sole Gardener will be responsible for all aspects of garden care and ornamental horticulture as well as lawn maintenance, operation and basic maintenance of garden machinery, pruning of the above species and any other horticultural duties that may arise.  There is considerable scope for development of the garden and the owners are open to new ideas.  As such, applicants should have an experience in design and associated plant use.

The ideal candidate for this role will be knowledgeable and experienced at Skilled/Sole/Senior level, a horticultural qualification is desirable for the role but not essential. Demonstrable skill and experience in pruning is essential, as is excellent knowledge of garden management, good time management skills and excellent attention to detail.  Applicants must be loyal and be trustworthy, self-motivated and interested in assisting with ongoing development of the garden through discussions with the owner, who takes an active interest in the garden.  Some flexibility in hours will be considered but will be based around 08:30 – 16:30, Monday to Friday.

Your role will be to create and maintain a positive and pleasant work environment, ensuring high levels of organisational effectiveness, communication, and safety.  The person appointed will be responsible for supervising a small team of landscapers working on individual projects. Your duties will include:

  • Assisting the Project Manager in the planning and organisation of projects
  • Ordering of materials and equipment.
  • Setting out the works from design drawings.
  • Delegating duties within the team.
  • Ensuring work is completed on time, and to a high standard of finish.
  • Liaising with the client and design team to resolve any problems.

Key Skills

Candidates must have excellent practical skills in all areas of hard landscaping, with a good eye for detail and strong leadership skills, able to demonstrate a successful track record of delivering high quality workmanship which is completed on time and within agreed budgets. Head Gardener

This is a unique and exciting opportunity for a highly experienced and qualified Head Gardener within a private Estate in the North Cotswolds.

This is a key position within a recently acquired private Cotswolds Estate that comprises traditional parkland area, fields and paths, traditional walled garden, kitchen gardens, formal and informal lawns, ponds, orchard, woods, arboretum, bed and borders of large Grade II listed Hall and its various guest houses and cottages.  The role is to oversee the ever-evolving development of these areas into stunning well-maintained gardens.

The successful candidate will ideally have an accredited horticultural qualification, proven managerial experience and skills, and be able to provide classic and contemporary designs for new and existing areas. You must be able to train, support, motivate, and safeguard staff through good practice as well as manage relevant contractors and control the horticultural budgets.

Reporting to and working closely with the Estate Manager to present classic, contemporary and innovative concepts and designs to the Principals. The Head Gardener will need to be a good communicator and be able to adapt to changing the needs of the Estate and its wider legacy objectives.

Presently the gardens are in need of immediate restoration. However, the vision for the estate over a couple of years is to transition the current farming practices to more to natural wildflower rich fields, meadows, hedgerows with new additional woodlands and wetlands with the objective of increasing flora and fauna diversity.  Suitable contractors will support some of these new endeavours. 

The Head Gardener will develop the Fruit and Vegetable gardens and the Estate Orchards in providing self-sufficient and sustainable Organic produce. Overall, the Gardening team will work with the Kitchen team to utilise the wider ingredients (e.g. Game meats) harvested within the Estate to produce healthy and nutritious meals. The Gardening team will provide the main and guest residences with regular cut flowers for display.   

Applicants will have a minimum of 5 years Head Gardener experience in a similar Estate or Garden. This role would suit a someone who is dedicated, passionate, driven, hands on leads by Example. The Head Gardener will be physically fit and hold spray certificates, chainsaw certificates, First Aid Certificates and a clean driving licence ideally including trailer/ tractor. Experience with regular maintenance of garden and field machinery (ride on mowers, tractors, strimmer’s, chainsaws, leaf blowers, PTO driven topper, etc).   

The Estate values and rewards colleagues that are aspirational and passionate about their roles and will work harmoniously in delivering the exciting legacy that the Principals have in mind. The Head Gardener will be able help to develop the team of 3 or 4 existing members.

Working week: 45 hours per week, Monday to Friday (with some shared weekend flexibility during seasonal intensive periods). References and a current DBS will be required.

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Maintenance Foreman to join a well-respected award-winning company in London. The company has been responsible for numerous very high-profile projects throughout the city for many years and are currently expanding their maintenance arm, leading to an increasing number of high-profile contracts. The company has recently secured a new, long-term, large maintenance contract in East London. They are seeking an experienced candidate to take the lead in the role of Maintenance Foreman, overseeing a small team, maintaining the site to a high standard. In addition to a competitive salary, the client will generously pay for the travel expenses of the successful candidate.

Main Responsibilities:

Our client is seeking an individual who is a hands on and knowledgeable. Candidates will have the ability to organize staff, plan and prioritize tasks as required. Additionally, they will be able to work as part of a team, using their strong plant knowledge to accurately direct and complete tasks to a high standard. Due to the nature of this site, the ability to liaise with both the public and clientele is a key.

Duties will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Maintenance Gardening
    • Lawn Maintenance
    • Pruning
    • Weeding
    • Watering
    • Planting
    • Mulching
  • Making sure Health and Safety requirements are adhered to.
  • Maintenance of irrigation systems.
  • Planning of daily tasks and overseeing throughout.

Key Skills:

The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong work ethic, having the ability to work under their own initiative while taking pride in their work and completing tasks to a high standard throughout all tasks on the large site. An understanding of Health and Safety regulations is essential. A PA1/PA6 spraying certificate and CSCS card would be desirable, however not essential.
