Senior Gardener - EC6824

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced and knowledgeable gardener to play a leading role on a beautiful, historic, traditional English country estate near Cirencester.  This position would suit an academically qualified and knowledgeable hands-on gardener with experience at senior and/or Head Gardener level.  The position is offered with or without accommodation with a negotiable salary dependent upon the successful applicant’s preference.

The private estate is open to the public at certain times of the year and currently attracts approximately 8000 visitors per year; however the family aims to increase this significantly following completion of a major refurbishment to the house in 2020.  The property is privately owned and has remained in the same family since its construction in the early 20th century, with the fourth generation now enjoying the estate and playing an active and hands-on role in its maintenance and development.  The estate plays host to a small number of events, such as a Rare Plant Fair, an opera, and a crafts event. An extensive snowdrop collection is also a significant draw for visitors each year.

Set within a small rural village and surrounded by agricultural fields and paddocks, the estate comprises an impressive main building of Cotswold stone with formal gardens extending to 8-acres.   The gardens follow a traditional formal English manor house style with generous planting of yew and box topiary, extensive hedging, herbaceous borders, planters, a variety of shrubs, native and exotic tree species, manicured lawns and climbing wisteria.  A walled garden is currently undergoing renovation.

Following the amicable departure of the previous position holder, the gardens are currently managed by one part-time gardener, one apprentice, two volunteers and regular hands-on contributions from the family themselves.  A requirement therefore exists for a more Senior Gardener to take the lead on garden management and development, which will involve working closely with the owners.

The ideal candidate will possess suitable academic and industrial horticultural qualifications as well as extensive hands-on garden management experience on private estates.  Applicants must have good knowledge of seasonal horticultural practices, species-specific pruning techniques and have the ability to supervise part-time gardeners, manage a garden budget, volunteers and contractors with diplomacy and positivity in order to ensure a happy and effective team.  Experience of creating and maintaining topiary, mixed borders, lawn maintenance, kitchen gardening and plant propagation, is essential.  Applicants must be competent with the operation and basic maintenance of garden machinery, with spray certificates (PA1/PA6) desirable.

The role will primarily involve working with the owners to develop the garden as both a private residence and visitor attraction, by way of maintaining excellent standards of presentation throughout the year.  As a key player on the estate, informal conversations with visitors about the garden will be expected, as well as developing towards conducting tours of the garden to groups of visitors.  Applicants should therefore be positive in their approach, confident in character and should find enjoyment and reward in passing on their expertise to visitors and colleagues alike.

Accommodation is provided locally if required, off site, to suit the successful applicant’s situation.  A salary adjustment will be made for those not requiring the provided accommodation.  The accommodation may be used temporarily in order to ensure smooth relocation of the successful candidate, or permanently if preferred.

Head Gardener - EC5254

A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen for a passionate and driven Head Gardener to manage a stunning botanical garden covering about 2 hectares in Montalcino (Siena), Italy.

The owner is a botany and landscape architecture enthusiast and has designed and created the garden growing hundreds of species, including antique roses and flowers sourced from all over the world. In addition to roses, bushes, perennials, enchanting peonies and beautiful collectible irises, there are also extraordinarily beautiful rare bulbs in the garden, such as the Tulipa Maureen tulip, which adorns the Renaissance-design flower beds, dominated by box plants. Olive trees, cypresses, lime trees and Melia Azedarach (“bead tree”) form a background to the gardens, which are harmoniously integrated into the Mediterranean scrub.

The garden is compartmentalised and includes the White Garden, a favourite haunt of “nocturnal pollinators”. The garden serves as a biodiversity pool for all the close environment, vineyard included. Countless insects and several other animal species have found a home in the botanical garden. There is also a pond, where aquatic plants and flowers grow, including the splendid water lily Marliacea Albida and Nelumbo Nucifera, whose leaves sparkle with crystalline drops of water. The garden is open to the public upon request and arranged in advance.

The owner has been developing and managing the garden for the past 30 years and is now looking for a Head Gardener towork closely with them. Together they are supported by 2 – 3 gardeners on a part time basis. As the garden includes about 1,000 roses of different species (Chinese, The, Climber, Rambler, Sarmentose, etc.), skills and capabilities in pruning is crucial. The successful candidate will manage and maintain the garden with a good attitude and the determination to do the done to the highest standard. He / She will be expected to carry out seasonal treatments and be able to assess the soil to make it an ideal "home" for what is to be planted. He / She will have the proper "feeling for the beauty" and sensitiveness, of the garden and can organise their schedule, whether working alone or with the help of a team.

Applicants will have conversational Italian, excellent horticultural knowledge and plant identification skills. They will be a true plants person, having experience working in a similar environment and ideally holding a horticultural qualification. The garden is organic; therefore, a good understanding of organic practices would be an advantage.

A one-bedroom property close to the garden is provided with the position. It is part of one of the buildings belonging to the estate, but with independent entrance. Annual leave to be agreed in advance and depending on garden's needs, considering that summer is quite a busy period for a garden in Tuscany.

This is an incredible opportunity for a head gardener with a true passion for the nature, for flowers and plants, for this garden in particular, in itself and as a part of the ecosystem.

Sole Gardener

Ref - EC5274

A fantastic new opportunity for an academically qualified and experienced gardener has become available at an exciting phase of development on a stunning Edwardian estate near Chepstow, Wales.  Using the original structure of the Edwardian garden, a significant proportion of the property is currently being renovated and re-designed by Arne Maynard, with completion expected in spring of 2020.  At this time, a Sole Gardener will be required to take ownership of the garden to ensure continued development and maintenance to a consistently high standard.

This impressive estate has been divided into different properties, with work being carried out on the main house garden which has deteriorated over the years.  The newly-designed two-acre garden will incorporate the original structure of the Edwardian garden as created at the beginning of the 1900’s, and will bring back the rich planting palette that has been lost over time as well as hard landscaping materials appropriate to the period.

Upon completion, the garden will consist of a terrace that wraps around the house with clipped enkianthus in pots with borders planted primarily with irises, a very large pergola garden supporting wisteria and roses with a surrounding rose garden encircling a formal pond planted with water lilies.  Large copper beech topiary will be set alongside the roses and will provide structure and scale, with cloud topiary providing variation of form and a contemporary edge.  A formal bowling lawn will be enveloped by an original yew hedge, framing various sculptures, with large yew topiary, two water features and deep herbaceous and shrub borders to provide colour against the deep green background.  An informal meadow of long grass planted with a collection of cherry trees and spring bulbs will provide a natural feel and a soft backdrop to the formal portions of the garden.  A rock garden will surround a large water garden, itself providing a diverse and stimulating focal point when viewed from the sunny south-facing aspect of the house.  Numerous existing trees at various stages of maturity will be retained, which will play a significant role in maintaining the historic and established feel of the property.  Upon completion of works to the main house in the spring of 2020, a magnolia walkway lined by peonies, mixed borders and a sculptural, spiral landform will be added.

As expected from a garden designed by Arne Maynard and his team, applicants for this position must possess extensive experience in hands-on garden management at a high level.  Suitable candidates will hold academic horticultural qualifications, preferably at RHS Level 3 or above, extensive knowledge of plants and their seasonal management and should have a strong background in private estate gardening at Sole/Senior and/or Head level.  Applicants must be physically fit and must be competent in the operation and basic maintenance of a full range of garden machinery.

The successful applicant will have additional help with items such as topiary clipping at certain times of the year as well as from specialist contractors, i.e. arboricultural specialists where necessary, but must be able and willing to work efficiently on their own for the majority of the time.  For the purpose of relocation assistance if required, 20% of the successful candidate’s agreed monthly pay will be added to the base pay each month for the first 12 months’ of employment.

Sole Gardener - EC4902 - This position has now been filled

Sole Gardener required

This is an exciting opportunity for a committed and imaginative person to take over management of a celebrated garden in Devon following the planned departure of the current postholder. Designed by the world renowned Arne Maynard, this private garden has featured in numerous national publications and remains a visitor highlight as part of the National Garden Scheme.   We are looking for someone keen to develop a long term career in horticulture by contributing to the further development of this unique and celebrated property. The ideal candidate for the post will be energetic and genuinely passionate about gardening in all its aspects, having good plant knowledge and horticultural skills but also with some management experience and excellent communication skills.  The successful applicant will have assistance provided on a part-time basis by a dedicated and knowledgeable local gardener, as well as specialist contractors where necessary, with the possibility of a full-time apprentice in the near future.

Now an established garden of approximately five acres set within a larger area of traditionally managed hay meadows, the garden demonstrates how contemporary design can be integrated into a traditional setting.  The ancient house already had the structure of a walled garden attached to the house prior to Arne Maynard’s renovation and re-design in 2008.  The expertise and knowledge of the lead gardener is relied upon to maintain the look and feel that has attracted so much deserving attention through the year. A heavy bespoke oak gate, inspired by wooden spindles from within the house, gives way to a walled garden where there are borders planted with fragrant lavender, violas, geraniums and mature yew topiaries.  Beyond this is a large kitchen garden of 22 raised beds, a knot garden, orchards, sunken greenhouse, cold frames and architectural oak fruit cages.  The kitchen garden is run organically with the no-dig method and produces vegetables for the house throughout the year, with the greenhouse being utilised for tender crops and propagation.  The kitchen garden also contains cut flowers, trained fruit trees, topiary and parterre beds.

Annually in May, 5000 bulbs including 2500 tulips and hundreds of camassias create a spectacle in the flower meadow and contribute to continued public interest in the garden, year on year.  The formal gardens and main house are set within a further 10-acres of wildflower meadows and paddocks, the latter being grazed by sheep and managed by a local farmer and associated contractors.

The successful applicant will have overall management responsibility of the garden in all its aspects and will also be expected to conduct up to 12 NGS group visits each year.  The successful applicant must be willing and able to look after various non-horticultural aspects of the estate including a small brood of chickens, basic garden DIY where necessary (repair of fruit cages, fences etc.) and management of the garden budget. Applicants for this position must possess academic training in horticulture, preferably at RHS Level 3 or above, and extensive knowledge of plants and hands-on garden management.  Plant propagation, glasshouse work, kitchen gardening and extensive ornamental plant management will all play a part in the post holder’s day-to-day working life.  Applicants must be physically fit, with the ability to operate and undertake basic maintenance of garden machinery, willingness and ability to provide direction to others, and have the flexibility in approach required to ensure the smooth running of the property.
