An opportunity has arisen for an experienced and talented horticulturist to join a stunning private estate based near Shaftesbury on the Dorset, Wiltshire border.

This position will suit an experienced and knowledgeable gardener with a desire to take on the maintenance and future development of a horticulturally diverse, typical English Country style garden in order to utilise their full horticultural skill set.

The historic Grade II* listed property is surrounded by 5-acres of new and established gardens. The gardens are currently being renovated by the very talented designer Miranda Brooks, the successful candidate will be working closely with the designer to see the devilment of the garden come to life.

The gardens boast impressive herbaceous borders, bursting with colour and texture throughout the seasons as well as formal lawns, orchard, carp pond and charming topiary sculptures and a new kitchen garden with a wonderful new greenhouse that is yet to be planted and developed.

The grounds are also host to a newly renovated lake with an Oak jetty and decking seating platform along with picnic areas, there is also an additional lake which is yet to be renovated along with streams running through the garden.

Suitable applicants will possess a recognised horticultural qualification as well as extensive experience in horticulturally diverse gardens in a private estate setting. Competence in all horticultural techniques is essential, as is a good understanding of vegetable gardening, plus a passion for developing gardens to reach their full potential.

Candidates will be expected to manage all aspects of grounds maintenance, including lawns, hedge cutting and topiary trimming, pathways and irrigation systems. This is a hands-on role so good physical fitness and a willingness to work outdoors in all weathers is essential.

Practical experience with the use and care of a full range of garden machinery is desired, with a chainsaw certification being advantageous. Applicants should be equally passionate, energetic and experienced hands-on professionals with an ability to manage a small team. The Role

Sole Gardener

An idyllic vacancy has arisen for an experienced and skilled Sole Gardener to take ownership of a stunning private garden near Altrincham, Greater Manchester. This position would suit an energetic and knowledgeable plants person with a creative eye and fine attention to detail.

The residence is surrounded by roughly 6-acres of formal gardens, pond, and woodland. The gardens feature formal lawns, glasshouse trained fruit trees, an organic kitchen garden which grows a variety of fresh produce for the main house such as seasonal vegetables and soft fruit. Also within the gardens are mixed herbaceous borders, annual display beds and a rose garden. There’s also knotted hedging, lots of topiary and yew hedging plus a wildflower meadow, two ponds and ancient woodland. The grounds were almost entirely reworked back in 2021 however are already well stocked and matured to create a beautiful and horticulturally diverse open space.

The Sole Gardener will be responsible for all aspects of garden care and ornamental horticulture as well as kitchen gardening, propagation, lawn care and maintenance, operation and basic maintenance of garden machinery, species specific pruning and any other horticultural duties that may arise.  The owners are passionate about their garden and often take inspiration from other gardens they visit and are open to new ideas the Sole Gardener may have. As such, it is hoped the successful candidate will have a keen interest in design to advise and aid the principles in getting the most from their garden as it continues to develop and mature.

Occasionally the Sole Gardener will be required to help on the wider estate, woodlands or other tasks appointed by the Estate Manager, so flexibility within the role is necessary. Additional ad hoc tasks may occur and will include but are not limited to helping set up for any events or functions at the property, pathway clearance, fence maintenance and other such tasks.

The ideal candidate for this role will be knowledgeable and experienced at Skilled/Sole/Senior level, holding a recognised horticultural qualification with extensive experience working within a similar environment, with a PA1 & PA6 spraying certificate desirable but not essential. Demonstrable skill and experience in all aspects of garden care is essential, as is excellent knowledge of garden management, good time management skills and excellent attention to detail. This is a private residence therefore applicants must be loyal and be trustworthy, self-motivated and interested in assisting with ongoing development of the garden through discussions with the owner. The owners have two small dogs as pets, plus there are guard dogs that live on site; therefore, the successful applicant should be at ease with dogs.

This is a full time, permanent position based on a 40-hour week, Monday to Friday with start and finish times dependant of the season. Holiday entitlement is 28 days per annum including all public Bank Holidays. Senior Gardener

A wonderful opportunity has arisen for a skilled estate gardener to maintain a beautiful private garden near Carlisle, Cumbria.  The position would suit an experienced and well-rounded horticulturist with good physical fitness and a willingness to undertake some general estate duties in addition to overall management of the garden.

The 10 acres estate surrounds the property and to the back of the house is the formal garden which leads to the orchard. The gardens comprise of formal lawns and hedges, mainly beech and holly hedges, mixed beds and borders, wildflower meadows, mature trees, rhododendrons, a newly established kitchen garden and a 5x4m glasshouse. Also included is a two-acre paddock for the donkeys.

The estate owners are passionate about their garden and are engaging with the gardening team. They are looking for a horticulturalist to manage the garden to a high standard and are open to ideas and suggestions to enhance the garden. The gardeners maintain the gardens as organically as possible with minimal use of sprays. Working alongside the Senior gardener is a Groundsperson / Handyperson and a Gardener who will be reducing their hours to 2 days / week.

Applicants should have extensive hands-on experience working on a private estate and should be flexible and adaptable in their approach to the requirements in the garden.  A full UK driving licence and own transport is necessary as the estate is in a rural location.

Knowledge, skills and experience:

A sole gardener is sought for an exciting role on this newly developing project in Cheshire. The site consists of approximately four acres of gardens surrounding the main house, and includes parterres, pools, terraces, wisteria walks, greenhouse/kitchen gardens, and herbaceous borders. The wider grounds include mixed native and specimen woods, wildflower meadows and the historic ‘Ladies Walk’ with pools and waterfalls.

Duties will include care of the gardens; ensuring the gardens and grounds are presented to a high standard at all times. Working with the designer to continue developing the gardens and grounds. Propagation. Control of pests, diseases and plant health. Maintenance and mowing of lawns. Keeping pathways and driveways weed free. Care and basic maintenance of garden machinery and tools, As Sole Gardener, there will occasionally be a requirement for additional duties to be carried out, which will include ad hoc caretaking and house plant care.

Applicants should ideally have 3 years’ experience in horticulture, a minimum level 2 RHS qualification, PA1 and PA6 spraying certificates and a full driving license. Chainsaw certification would be advantageous but not essential. However, we are open to hearing from all levels of experience; and would welcome a candidate with less than 3 years’ experience, should you be willing to learn and grow with the role. The role requires a self-motivated individual happy to work alone. An enhanced DBS will be required. A 40-hour week is offered on a permanent basis, with a generous salary for the ideal candidate.

Experienced Gardener

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Experienced Gardener with the enthusiasm for maintaining a beautiful garden to a high standard set east of Peterborough. The position is full time, permanent and would suit a friendly and knowledgeable all rounded gardener.

The property is a beautiful old Victorian Rectory set within 7 acres of land. The majority of the estate is paddocks without animals onsite and the 3-acre garden consists of extensive manicured lawns, a topiary garden, several mixed beds and borders, roses, hedges with one large hedge along the driveway, old established trees and new trees that were planted this year.

The owner is passionate about her garden and will work closely with the experienced gardener in putting together the plans throughout the year. The owners are a friendly and private couple and therefore, discretion is important at all times. There are two part time gardeners who will assist the experienced gardener in maintaining the garden. Their son currently lives in Cambridge and the Gardener will be expected to maintain their garden once per week for this year.

The ideal candidate will be energetic, ambitious, and physically fit as the role is hands-on.  A passion for gardens and attention to detail is essential with good horticultural and plant knowledge. PA1/PA6 spray certificates and chainsaw certificates would be an advantage although training can be given. A driving licence is required for the role due to the rural locality of the estate and also a van is provided for work purposes. There is a wide range of machinery including gardening tools, vintage tractor and trailer therefore the ability to operate a range of garden machinery and good craft skills are also desirable for the role.

You will need to be organised, able to plan and prioritise your workload, have good communications skills and the ability to work alongside others. The working hours are 8 am to 4 pm with half an hour lunch but there can be some flexibility.

A self-motivated and skilled gardener is sought after for a private house near Woking, Surrey. The position is open to either a full-time sole gardener or on a part time basis (3 – 4 days / week) with additional help.

The property is surrounded by seven acres of garden in total, of which three acres are laid to lawns, beds, borders, yew hedging and a pond. There is also a tennis court, swimming pool, a variety of mature trees and the remaining land is grazing fields. They are in the process of building a greenhouse in the Spring.   

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced gardener and would suit a self-starter with detailed plant knowledge, able to maintain the current structure to a high horticultural standard and to design and execute a series of additional projects to enhance the garden over the years. Additional duties may include swimming pool maintenance and assisting with managing contractors onsite. 

The gardener will be organised, plan and prioritise workload and work autonomously. If a part-timer is appointed, he or she will also manage the additional help.
