Sole Gardener

Sole Gardener required

Ref No EC14322

A fantastic lifestyle opportunity has arisen near Bramley in Surrey, for a skilled and creative gardener to join a welcoming family on their estate on a live-in basis, and to help with the ongoing development of their garden.  This role would suit well-rounded estate gardener with strong horticultural knowledge and associated academic qualifications.  The full-time permanent position is offered with a generous salary and a spacious one-bedroom flat on site.  A full and cleared criminal background check (DBS/CRB) is required of all applicants.

The property is situated in an idyllic valley in the Surrey Hills and comprises approximately 20-acres overall, inclusive of surrounding fields and woodland.  The family took ownership of the former equine estate less than two years ago and are gradually working towards developing a varied and beautiful garden.  The successful applicant will therefore play a key part in the owners’ desire to undertake a new project each year, with their creative flare and horticultural experience being drawn upon at every opportunity.

The gardens are at various stages of development in terms of planting and design, though large areas are complete and include mixed beds/borders, shrubberies, specimen trees, an orchard with approximately 50 fruit trees, a formal kitchen garden, wild flower meadow areas, a pond with approximately 50 fish as well as waterlilies and surrounding planting, and a swimming pool within a walled garden.  The gardens are framed by native mature woodland which play host to three rare breed pigs, with one section having been recently cleared and planted with various species including 400 foxgloves.  The fields are grazed by sheep, and large trees will be planted in the fields in the near future.  A local Bee expert looks after six hives within an acre of borage.  Machinery on site consists of a 3-tonne digger, a tracked dumper, quad bike, a large ride-on mower, trailers and a range of hand-held garden machinery and tools.  The Sole Gardener will have use of a Land Rover Defender where the need arises and as such, a full driving licence is essential.

Applicants for this role should hold an academic horticultural qualification, ideally at Level 3 or above, with strong plant knowledge and several years’ experience in gardening positions of responsibility on diverse private estates.  Physical fitness and a genuine ‘can-do’ attitude are required alongside competence with general garden machinery.  Experience with chainsaws and chemical spray applicators is desired, though otherwise suitable applicants will not be discounted.  The garden is largely run organically so candidates must have an understanding of organic plant pest and disease management methodologies.  This role offers an opportunity to showcase creative skill and as such, those with a keen eye for plant use and garden design are encouraged to apply.

As this is a live-in Sole Gardener role on a diverse and developing estate, the successful applicant will be asked to remain on site when the family are on holiday in order to provide general security for the property.  Other non-horticultural duties include assisting the owner with moving logs/firewood, checking the Chlorine levels in the pool once per week and the occasional airport drop-off (approximately four times per year).

This role is offered with a spacious one-bedroom flat located within the property and separate from the main house.  The property would suit a single person or couple but is unfortunately not suitable to accommodate children.  Pets will be considered within reason.  The flat is approximately 600m2 and will be refurbished in time for the new gardener to commence work.  The flat is an old oak barn with expansive views along the valley in which the estate sits.  All bills are covered by the employer, including a 500mbps internet connection and VOIP telephone, all utilities, rent and Council tax.  The flat has no garden of its own but the owner is happy to allocate a portion of the field so that the successful applicant can create their own outdoor space if desired.

This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled, qualified and well-rounded estate gardener to take on a new and ongoing project on a stunning private estate alongside a very welcoming and creative family.  A full and cleared criminal background check is required of all applicants.

Sole Gardener

Sole Gardener required

Ref EC14275

A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen for a top-level Sole Gardener near High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.  This new role will suit an academically qualified and talented horticulturist with demonstrable garden management experience on large and diverse private estates.  The position is offered with a generous salary and a large three-bedroom property located within the wider estate with extensive views and its own garden.

The stunning 4-acre formal gardens are set within 70-acres of meadows, woodland and farmland.  Designed by Jinny Blom approximately ten years ago, the gardens exemplify the English Country Garden style and sensitively compliment the manor house and surrounding views.  The garden is divided into ‘rooms’ with each area significantly different to the next; a large Ha-ha overlooking a beautiful valley, a yew topiary garden that evokes images of Alice in Wonderland, and a large rose garden framed by a backdrop of mature native woodland.  The gardens have been managed by a local contractor in terms of general maintenance, but it is now time to hand over to a dedicated and knowledgeable full-time permanent gardener to realise the full potential of this spectacular property.

The gardens of the primary manor house as well as the gardener’s house will require ongoing management and further development where necessary.  A new wing to the manor house has been added, with an additional garden area that is to be managed and improved to maturity.  The main gardens include an expansive rose garden including climbing roses on walled garden areas, a topiary garden, wild flower areas, an orchard, woodland and paths, a glasshouse and polytunnel, cutting flower garden, mixed beds/borders, terraces, and expansive fine laws throughout.

Due to the expansive rose and topiary areas, the garden requires dedication and excellent attention to detail as well as a strong work ethic.  Assistance may be offered by way of specialist contractors where necessary, i.e. during peak growing season.  Applicants for this role must be physically fit, hands-on and talented horticulturists with a very well-rounded knowledge of garden management.  Good ornamental plant knowledge is essential, as is an ability to carry out species specific pruning (particularly of roses), soil treatment/management, pest and disease control and the safe operation and basic maintenance of a full range of garden machinery.  An academic horticultural qualification at RHS level 3 or equivalent/above is desired, as is the ability to operate a chainsaw safely, though the latter will not discount otherwise suitable applicants.  Experience in kitchen gardening and plant propagation/glasshouse work is required alongside a demonstrable ability to carry out efficient seasonal garden management and planning.  Due to the rural location of the property, a full driving licence is required of all applicants.

The welcoming property owner has a genuine love of the garden and so will not be entirely distant but involved and engaged on a level considerate of the successful candidate’s extensive experience.  As areas of the gardens require further work, the Sole Gardener will work through the options and opportunities with the owner and manage the implementation of the agreed designs/initiatives from a hands-on perspective.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a skilled, qualified and experienced horticulturist to take ownership of a truly stunning garden on a long-term basis.  Applications are sought from experienced Sole/Senior and Head Gardeners in search of genuine reward for their talent and a garden in which to achieve their full potential.

Sole Gardener

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced, qualified and physically fit Sole Gardener to join a stunning historic private estate in Hampshire on a full-time permanent basis.  This role will suit a knowledgeable horticulturist with extensive hands-on management experience on large private estate gardens, as well as a proven ability to work well on their own.

The 300-year-old property is owned by a knowledgeable gardener and has been managed for nearly nine years by an employed Sole Gardener.  The garden has been lovingly maintained and developed over this time, such that it is of paramount importance to source a genuinely enthusiastic and knowledgeable person to continue the legacy.  The current Sole Gardener will leave the post in May and will be available until this time to ensure a smooth transition into the role for the successful applicant.

The garden has been successfully maintained by the current Sole Gardener for the past nine years, however specialist contractors will be brought in where necessary, i.e. for aerial tree work, however the successful applicant should be confident in their ability to undertake the management of large hedges (and associated equipment) and in their pace of work in general.  Attention to detail and a high standard of care is expected at all times.

This is an excellent opportunity for a suitably qualified and experienced gardener to join a stunning historic private estate in a beautiful part of the country, on a full-time permanent basis.  The owner is a knowledgeable garden lover and looks to build a long term, positive, and enjoyable working relationship with the successful candidate.
