An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced gardener to join a close estate team on a beautiful private property in Central Dorset, on a full-time basis.

The rural property is situated in a beautiful location, approximately 20-miles from the Dorset coast.  The historic main house is surrounded by formal gardens with parkland, mature trees and managed paddocks beyond.  Within the estate a small team of staff ensure the smooth running of the grounds, of which the successful applicant will play an integral part. The 100-acre estate houses a variety of formal gardens including ornamental bedding, borders and lawns, a glasshouse, walled vegetable garden, a swimming pool, 2 lakes’, an orchard and mature trees throughout.  This position will require applicants to have a good understanding of, and experience in kitchen gardening, as a wide variety of produce is grown for the house on an ongoing basis, along with a comprehensive plant knowledge and the maintenance of to provide the estate with fresh cut flowers.   

The Gardener will play an important role in ensuring the formal gardens are maintained to high standards while working closely alongside the wider team, that include the Head Gardener, a full time Groundsman and a part time colleague.

Suitable applicants for this role will have experience of working within a private estate environment from a hands-on perspective.  Applicants should have good plant identification skills, excellent attention to detail and a methodological approach to their work.  Demonstrable experience in kitchen gardening and plant propagation/glasshouse work is essential, as is competency in the operation and basic maintenance of garden machinery.  Spraying qualifications (PA1/PA6), an in-date First Aid certificate, and chainsaw certificate would be desirable, though training can be provided in the areas necessary for otherwise suitable candidates. Applicants must be tidy in their work, presentable, positive in attitude and possess a working understanding of the considerations required of gardeners on private estates.

Head Gardener

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Head Gardener to lead a small team on a beautiful and established private estate near Hungerford, West Berkshire. This role would suit a knowledgeable and hands on gardener with previous experience as a Head Gardener.

The estate covers approximately 72-acres in total, with 25-acres being dedicated to the garden to varying degrees of formality.  The highly maintained gardens comprise wide herbaceous and grass borders, herb gardens, a large kitchen garden and walled gardens, wider shrub and woodland planting around a lake, with extensive natural woodlands, natural swimming ponds and water meadows. 

The Head Gardener will lead a team of three including one full time and two part time gardeners, to maintain the newly established garden to a high horticultural standard as well as continue to enhance and carry out ongoing projects such as tree planting.  The role will hands on with the team and involve general garden maintenance such as mowing, hedge cutting, strimming, pruning etc. in addition to the maintenance of all plantings, weed control, staking/wire supports, assistance within the woodland areas, maintenance of all lawn areas, wildflower areas and water meadows, seasonal bulb and pot planting, seed collection and propagation, maintenance of all drives, paths, terrace and tracks, maintaining the irrigation system, mulching, maintenance of garden features e.g. water features, sculptures, seating, checking drains, the maintenance of equipment, composting of waste on site, assisting with  vegetable, fruit, nut and cut flower production in the kitchen garden, maintenance of a natural swimming pond as well as general estate maintenance where necessary.

Suitable candidates will ideally hold academic horticultural qualifications at RHS Level 2 or above/equivalent as well as a minimum of 3 years’ experience as a Head Gardener on private estates.  Applicants should have good horticultural knowledge as well as some experience in plant propagation and kitchen gardening.  Physical fitness is essential as is an ability to safely operate garden machinery.  Chainsaw and chemical spray certificates would be beneficial. 

This is an excellent opportunity to join an impressive private estate, and to work alongside a great team.  The role is available to either be live in or live out. If live out, the salary would be up to £45,000 depending on experience and applicants will ideally live within a reasonable commute of Inkpen, Hungerford. If live in, the salary would be £35,000 depending on experience and a two-bedroom cottage onsite provided rent free with council tax and bills e.g. water and electricity paid by the employer.

Head Gardener

An exciting opportunity has become available for a self-motivated and driven head gardener on an incredible estate near Haverhill in Suffolk. The head gardener will report directly to the garden owner and may occasionally work with a well-known garden designer who has been responsible for restoring areas of the garden. However, the head gardener will be responsible for enhancing the garden’s incredible features and restoring new areas, as well as managing and maintaining the garden as a whole. The position is full time and on a permanent basis.

The 13-acre historic gardens surrounding the grade II listed property are part of a large country sports-based estate and have two 200-meter canals running through it. There are extensive lawns at the front and back, which are currently being restored, and the house is surrounded by herbaceous borders. There is also a rose garden, a small dry garden area that is being extended and a 150 long border that is being redeveloped. The large new kitchen garden is managed as a no-dig, fixed bed area, and is used to grow fresh vegetables, perennial and annual cutflowers and soft fruit to supply the house year round.

The orchard is in need of replanting and a wildflower meadow that is currently being created. A set of heated dutch style glasshouses is also part of the property and is used to grow vegetables year round, peaches, apricots and grapes and has extensive bench area for propagating large numbers of plants to be used in the garden. A swimming pool and tennis court are also part of the garden and the owners are keen to redesign around these areas. The garden is surrounded by extensive paddocks and wild parkland and an incredible area of woodland wraps around the property, which is filled with snowdrops and daffodils in spring.

The head gardener must have excellent plant knowledge and a genuine hunger and excitement for creating stunning and unique gardens. The successful applicant will work to a high horticultural standard to continue to improve the borders, redevelop new areas of the garden which are in active expansion, keep the kitchen garden productive and maintain the glasshouses and the different areas of the garden. At the moment, there is a skilled part-time gardener who does 3 days a week and will assist the successful candidate, as well as a full time groundsman. As the garden develops and expands so will the team.

Applicants should ideally possess a horticultural qualification combined with excellent plant and tree knowledge and previous experience working on private estates.  Experience growing fruit, vegetables and cutflowers as well as specialist pruning is required for the role. Ability to operate a range of garden machinery and good craft skills are also desirable for the role. A full UK driving licence is essential and experience driving compact tractors is also desirable. Although the gardens are run mainly on organic practices, the candidate will ideally hold a spraying certificate and have experience with such.

The position is open to candidates looking for a live in or live out position. A 3 bedroom cottage can be provided on site and partners, children and pets are welcome. Council tax is paid by the tenant but reimbursed by the employer in the monthly payslip and bills are the responsibility of the tenant.
