The owner now requires an experienced gardener with a proven track record of managing a large mature English country garden to assist in the ongoing maintenance and development of the garden and grounds. This is a full-time permanent position, however the principles will consider those looking for a 4 day week for the right candidate.

The gardens are roughly 6-acres in size and feature a walled garden together with green house, Espalier fruit trees, vegetable patch, established roses, herbaceous borders and woodland. The gardens also contain formal lawns and extensive hedges of yew, beech and box. The garden is mature and has been professionally designed and maintained therefore the owners are looking for a highly skilled candidate to keep the gardens at a high standard.  

Our client seeks an experienced gardener to help maintain the gardens on a year-round basis following the annual calendar. Applicants will possess an academic horticultural qualification, such as a Kew Diploma, RHS level 2 or equivalent, combined with extensive experience working in a similar role. As such, excellent plant knowledge and technical skills are essential for this position with experience in compost management, propagation, spraying, weeding and rejuvenating beds. A self-motivated, organised individual with a self-start attitude and proven track record of managing a large mature English country garden, with a strong work ethic, ability to work to their own initiative and willingness to work to consistently high standards are qualities which are essential for this role. Candidates will be flexible and willing to extend their duties where needed. As such, this is a physically demanding position which requires a fit and strong individual who is comfortable working in all weathers.

General maintenance duties will include but are not limited to pruning, propagating, weeding, edging and compost management. The owner is passionate about their garden and are open to ideas the Gardener will have with regards to the development of the gardens. The lawns are cared for by external contractors, therefore previous experience in managing contractors will be advantageous for prospective candidates. Experience in the use and maintenance of a wide range of gardening machinery as well as PA1 and PA6 spraying certificates, and a chainsaw certification are desirable for this position. The house is equipped with machinery, which the gardener should be capable of maintaining between services.

Skilled Gardener

Following the completion of a major redesign and landscaping of the garden by Arne Maynard, the owners are looking for a knowledgeable, enthusiastic and hands-on gardener to help grow and continue to develop their 3-acre garden based near Heathfield, East Sussex. The successful candidate should also have an eye for floristry as the owners enjoy growing, cutting and using flowers and plants from the garden inside the house.

The stunning Grade II listed property dates back to the late 13th century with 18th and 19th century additions. The gardens are currently kept private, but the owners are considering opening through the NGS. The gardens consist of ancient pasture to the front of the house culminating in a circular driveway with a large central lawn. This space will be changed to into an intricate garden to create a distinct area. The west facing garden has mature trees, shrubs and topiary at various levels and is bordered by pleached hornbeams separating it from the rear garden. Beyond the shrubs, a secret garden will be created. The South-facing Garden benefits from a large lawn, pond, wildflower meadow and a paved terrace adjacent to the house, an elegant south-facing brick wall supports a flower border, there are also a summer house and a greenhouse. A small stream with deep protective banks runs down one side of the garden and there is an orchard to the rear accessed by bridges, this stocks apples, plums, mulberry, pears, a walnut and ornamental tree.

Applicants must have excellent attention to detail and a positive, enthusiastic attitude towards their work.  The successful candidate with ideally hold a horticultural qualification and have about 3 years’ experience working on a private estate garden.  The gardener will work closely with the owners and must be able to communicate effectively.  The gardens are mainly organic; however, sprays are occasionally used for pathways etc. therefore a spray certificate would be an advantage as well as a chainsaw certificate but not essential. A driving licence is required.

Typical garden management duties in relation to the garden will include:

  • Ongoing maintenance of, and potentially additional planting, in the existing areas of the garden including the development of areas of Rhododendrons in the woodland.
  • Annual planting and management of existing cutting beds and pot displays and management of existing fruit orchard.
  • Creating, and working with the client, in developing flower displays within the house using plants from the garden.
  • Taking over ongoing management of plantings and maintenance for the garden.
  • Supporting the successful establishment of new trees and topiary including, where necessary, developing new topiarised shapes amongst other mature specimens.
  • General maintenance of hedges, lawns and wildflower areas including supervision of others, where this makes sense, in the cutting of large areas of hedging.

Sole Gardener

An incredible vacancy has arisen for a Sole Gardener to take on the responsibility for developing and maintaining a 5-acre private garden located near Heathfield, East Sussex.  This is a fantastic opportunity for a skilled horticulturalist with a keen interest in developing a beautiful garden and being part of developing a garden from early stages.

The owners have spent the past few years renovating the house and have recently turned their attention to the development of the garden.  Work has begun on an extensive overhaul and re-design.   The owners are keen to employ a passionate plants person with a creative flair and a keen eye for detail to further develop plans and give input to improve the garden.

The garden is divided into different zones with varied herbaceous / shrub beds and borders, a kitchen and cutting garden with raised beds, an orchard, a large pond with potential for development, a new Alitex greenhouse and a recently planted dry garden. There are four outbuildings which require linking to the main house via new pathways and surrounding planting to achieve a greater sense of flow and unity. It is anticipated that the design and development will require 12 to 24 months to complete with maintenance and continued enhancement thereafter. Landscapers may be contracted to assist with certain aspects of the garden and the Sole Gardener will be expected to liaise with the landscapers on any work carried out.

Applicants will have extensive hands-on experience in horticulturally diverse gardens, good physical fitness, combined with comprehensive plant knowledge and experience working on development projects in the garden. A recognised horticultural qualification would be desirable, though not essential if evidence of adequate experience can be provided. Practical experience with a full range of garden machinery is useful.  

The appointed candidate will be required to work unsupervised and will liaise with the owners. A new vacancy has arisen on a spectacular private estate near High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire for an experienced gardener to work for genuinely warm and welcoming employers. This role will suit an all-rounded horticulturist with drive to utilise their horticultural knowledge and experience on a full time and permanent basis.

The majestic eighteenth-century house is surrounded by 80 acres of land including parkland and paddocks. The main gardens consist of various terraces with different planting schemes, formal bedding, rose borders surrounding the house and a walled kitchen garden with raised beds to grow a variety of fruit and vegetables as well as provides shelter to an area that exemplifies ornamental gardening through each of the four seasons.  Great expanses of lawn, mature and young trees, lavender pathways, and ornamental planting all highlight the traditional English landscape. 

The senior gardener will work alongside a groundsman to care for the garden with great attention to detail. Outside contractors assist with the parkland and paddocks. Suitable candidates for this role will ideally hold a horticultural qualification and / or practical experience in private estate gardens.  The focus of this role is fine horticulture, so excellent plant identification skills are essential in addition to a thorough understanding the seasons. Duties include rotate crops, cultivate, harvest and prune fruit and vegetables in walled garden, general garden maintenance such as lawncare, hedge cutting, leaf collecting, weeding, moss control, manage fruit trees including pruning and general health, pest and disease control, tending to herbaceous borders and topiary and further developing the composting system. The successful candidate will also work with the owners on suggested planting plans.

Applicants should be flexible, energetic and cooperative in nature with a positive and friendly outlook.  The owners try to be organic as possible in the garden, though chemicals are used in some areas and therefore some experience of chemical-free gardening methodologies would be helpful as well as spray certificates would be an advantage. Chainsaw certificates would be a plus or the willingness to acquire as the owners would be happy to support the training. Candidates will have a sound understanding of general garden machinery – their use and basic maintenance as well as be confident driving an ATV. Good physical fitness and an eye for detail are required, with an ability to work well within a team as well as alone where necessary. 

The role is offered with a competitive salary and a recently refurbished 2 bedroom / 2 bathroom cottage with council tax, utility bills broadband and TV licence covered by the employer.

This is a fabulous opportunity for a skilled horticulturist who is happy to be hands-on and proactive, content working in the garden alone as well as part of a team with good physical fitness and an eye for detail.
