An enthusiastic and hands-on Senior Gardener is required to work in collaboration with the owner on managing and developing a beautiful garden of a private estate in Maldon, Essex. This is an exciting position for someone looking to be an integral part of the ongoing design, development and maintenance of the gardens.
The property is surrounded by a diverse 11-acre garden. The main area surrounding the property has a canvas for exuberant, colourful and vibrant planting of thousands of tulips in box-edged beds followed by an exotic display of dahlias, bananas, grasses, cosmos, sunflowers and other annuals to provide late summer interest. The garden extends out into the countryside and the emphasis changes to a more naturalistic and permanent style of planting. Drifts of snowdrops and daffodils start the gardening year off. Mature weeping willows grace the side of a large pond with herbaceous perennials in shady stream beds. Woodland, pink and white theme gardens as well as drought-tolerant borders and a perennial wildflower meadow provide other areas of interest throughout the season. In addition, there is a productive vegetable garden with a Victorian-style greenhouse.
The owner is a garden enthusiast and is very much involved in the day to day running of the garden. The garden is open to the public through the NGS and arranged tours from the UK and abroad to raise money for charity. The garden is ever evolving, and the owner is looking for a Senior gardener to work in collaboration with them, inspire and be inspired by them.
The ideal candidates will have excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills with a friendly disposition. They will be self-motivated as well as possessing the initiative to work with and supervise one other part time gardener. They will possess the initiative to plan and complete projects in consultation with the estate owner, working as part of a team in a family environment. The successful applicant will be responsible for planning and prioritising the garden work schedule and ensure that they are compliant with Health and safety at all times.
Applicants must have thorough knowledge of plant types and excellent plant identification skills. Experience with various planting schemes and demonstrable experience of managing a large private garden. A horticultural qualification would be valuable, and the Senior Gardener will be confident with their specialist knowledge such as pest and disease management and nutritional deficiencies. PA1/PA6 spraying certificate and CS30/31 chainsaw certificates would be an advantageous but not essential. A non-smoker is preferred and due to the rural location of the property, a driving licence and own vehicle is essential.

Sole Gardener
A wonderful opportunity has arisen for an experienced Sole Gardener to maintain and manage the gardens of a beautiful private estate in Godalming, Surrey.
The grounds extend to 35 acres including fields that are looked after and maintained by horse owners who keep horses in the fields. The 18-acre gardens comprise of expansive lawns requiring care (except in the summer), a small kitchen garden, the rockery is one of the most important and labour-intensive parts of the garden including acers, shrubs and some annuals, two greenhouse, mixed borders on the terrace and around the tennis court, and roses are grown in the fruit cage that also has apple trees, some soft fruit bushes and a cherry tree.
The current Gardener will be retiring in October, the owners are now looking to recruit an experienced gardener/horticulturalist with the skills and knowledge to maintain the gardens to a high horticultural standard. Outside contractors are employed for seasonal/occasional jobs such as hedge cutting, clearing of the wild valley twice a year and tree surgeons.
The successful candidate will be a well-rounded and experienced private estates gardener with an academic horticultural qualification and/or extensive experience. Enthusiasm, energy and physical fitness is paramount, as is your understanding of seasonal horticultural practices and plant identification. The ideal candidate will possess spray certificates and a chainsaw certificate is a requirement. A diesel garden tractor to pull the trailer, a Saxon wide sit-on mower and a push mower for the area around the pool are available onsite and the gardener looks after the basic maintenance of these, but they are serviced elsewhere annually.
As this is a Sole Gardener role, you must also be willing and able to undertake typical garden-based duties as well as other estate duties. The property owners are genuinely friendly, amenable, and passionate about their garden. As such, you will need to have good organisational skills and be willing to plan your day effectively.
Additional non horticultural duties include but are not limited to feeding the chickens and doves every morning, collects eggs and cleans out the chicken house on Fridays. The owners have a dog and therefore the Gardener must be comfortable with dogs and occasionally letting the dog out when the owner is away.
A competitive salary is provided based on a working week of 37.5 hours. Working hours are 8 – 4 pm in the winter and 8 – 5 pm in the summer with 30 minutes for lunch each day, and two 15-minute breaks for tea/coffee.

There will be a small amount of kitchen gardening work which the owners may look to expand in the future. Professional contractors will be brought in where necessary e.g. tree surgeons but applicants should have a good working knowledge of the garden to identify when required.
An academic horticultural qualification would be advantageous, good physical fitness, a proven ability to manage their own time and demonstrate competency in the operation and basic maintenance of garden machinery. The successful candidate will be required to:

An experienced Sole Gardener is required for managing approximately 5 acres of private estate garden in Surrey. The garden includes a formal area of lawns, herbaceous borders and parterre, a kitchen garden and glasshouse, a rockery and less formal areas of lawns, ponds, a number of large trees, extensive hedging and woodland.
The candidate will need to attend to the formal garden and grounds to a high standard. He or she will manage the kitchen garden, supplying the owners with fresh produce. Additional duties will include ensuring the security of the property in the owner’s absence, undertaking minor handyman duties, providing firewood for the household and looking after the cars. He or she will occasionally drive the owners to the airport and as such, a full UK driving license is essential for this position.

The successful candidate will have a broad knowledge of plants, composting and box blight treatment. Previous experience with a wide range of gardening machinery and PA1/PA6 spraying certification are a requirement for this position. The hours of work for this position are 40-hours per week, Monday to Friday with start and finish times dependant on the season. The position provides a 1 bedroom on flat onsite, rent and rates provided by the client, with its own entrance, a small courtyard and garage. Main Responsibilities

Main duties will include:

Our client is an established company operating from West London specialising in the design and construction of bespoke residential gardens. They have won a number of industry awards for their work and unique designs which often incorporate specialist materials and features requiring the highest standard of workmanship. They currently have a vacancy for an Experienced Horticulturalist to be part of their successful and progressive company.
Job Description:
The person appointed will be working within a small team of 2-3 working on individual projects reporting to the maintenance manager. The successful candidate will be assisting in high end domestic garden maintenance.
- General ground care, use of strimmer’s/mowers/hedge cutters
- Maintaining beds and boarders
- Weeding
- Mulching
- Planting
- Pruning
- Communicate with clients
- Be aware of health & safety on site
Key Skills:
Candidates must have a dedicated and positive attitude to work with the ability to work in a team as well as independently. The successful candidate will have a keenness to learn and have experience in operating garden machinery with an eye for detail. Normal hours of work will be 07:30-16:30 with overtime, salary and level of position will be dependent on previous garden maintenance knowledge and experience, a current driving license is essential.
